The Track I'm Listening To Is....................... - CRAZY-HORSE - 15-09-2015

one of the saddest songs I have ever heard, it probably reflects MJ's "lost childhood"...

"Lucky Man' from Marillion's Sounds That Can't Be Made - just one of many great tracks on this album ... a good listen.

ive never heard a song by these guys, I just assumed they were some sort of metal band...

I like this track...pretty good for a band thirty years into a recording career when they recorded this in 2012.

thanks Ruby, im going to investigate these guys further.

You're welcome CH. There are two distinct Marillion periods; one while Fish was their lead vocalist - a highly literate individual and no slouch in the lyrics department – also a large guy physically, and an imposing presence generally speaking. His last album with them was Clutching at Straws which was released in 1987. Post Fish we have Steve Hogarth who lends a charm of his own and a noteworthy, emotive voice with an excellent range. I’m by no means a Marillion fundi, but I would listen to Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws from the Fish era, and Afraid of Sunlight, Marbles and Sounds That Can’t Be Heard from the Hogarth period (which has lasted longer BTW, although there are staunch Fish supporters who will say the band was never the same after he left). Personally, I find merits in both lead vocalists.

You will definitely have heard the Fish’s “Kayleigh” at some stage, whether you realise it or not, and possibly “Sugar Mice”.

They are often pegged as neo-prog and have some really epic, lengthy songs which may be why you haven’t explored them up to now. Frankly, I don’t really know where they fit it – just that they have always seemed a little out of step and yet are exceptionally successful in terms of record sales and a loyal fanbase. They have never quite been in fashion and haven't received a whole lot of press: a paradox! Steve Rothery, who is a simply amazing guitarist, has been with them all along. Now, he is a force majeure! Enjoy the investigation!!
