What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 23-04-2011

1983 live recording from Solomon Burke and his crack band.

Sounds like it was recorded in a small club, which gives the performance some intimacy, and SB converses with the audience during the show. Comes across as a secular sermon as he expounds on the subjects of Luurrve, the importance of the rise of women, and even a tiny bit of the Jesus stuff.

Top knotch Soul from a Soul legend.

AllMusic 4+/5 stars.

EMINEM "the slim shady lp" 1999, cd. #2 US, #12 UK.

prior to first listening to Eminem i was quite conservative with my musical taste and dismissed rap as total bollocks,as did millions of white people, guess he said something we could relate to in his songs other than guns, whores and pimps which dominated rap themes before he changed the rules.
this is Marshall Mathers III second album, the first, "infinate" shows glimpses of the 'legend' and 'genius' that is Eminem but it took the greatness of Dr.Dre to turn him into a superstar and the best white rapper of all time.
each album is autobiographical of stages of his life, this one deals with his poverty, bad upbringing, being bullied at school, teenage drug and booze parties. all dark themes with added humour to partially take away the seriousness of the lyrics....then ends up with the twist that he really doesnt give a f##k what anyone thinks of him.
lyrically...it has original 'flows' that is still unique.
musically...Dr.Dre's beats and production is 1st class.
and i didnt expect the rating to come out as high as it does.

Bargain comp which does exactly what it says on the tin.

Some of the songs are a bit obscure to be called classics IMV, but nonetheless this is a greatly enjoyable Motown album.

AllMusic 1+/5 stars (That's unnecessarily brutal !).

Bought on recommendation of Crazyman.

I've loved Cee lo's voice since Gnarls Barkley first made waves.

This is basically a 1960s Soul record dressed up in contemporary clothes. Hugely assured songs, which are made complete by Cee lo's killer voice.

Don't know if further singles are to be released, but this could be the soundtrack to the forthcoming summer...

Southern Soul singer Millie J found success when her work started to get raunchy and suggestive, and she never really changed the formula. At her best she produced some wonderful records, but this isn't one of them.

Some pretty horrible '80s production touches (it was released in 1983), and a bit too much smut spoil this one somewhat, but Millie's voice is always worth hearing, for me.

self-debate over where to put Ms. Warwick.

This was her last best-selling album making #12 on the U.S. charts, on the strength of the massively successful #1 single, That's What Friends Are For. This album, with various producers, was probably hastily put together by the man, Clive Davis, after the single broke. Written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager in 1982, as is about half of the album, the song was originally introduced by none other than Rod Stewart, for the soundtrack to the film Night Shift. The version here, done as a benefit for aids research, features Dionne, Gladys Knight, Elton John and Stevie Wonder. All artists that were over their peak even then. Put them all together and you have some tremendous talent. That is the best thing on the album and the only track that includes vocalists other than Dionne. There are a couple of other outstanding tracks in Stay Devoted and No One There. Nothing bad on the album. Whisper In The Dark was also a single, but bombed out.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Extravagant Gestures

Best Track - That's What Friends Are For

And I never thought I'd feel this way
And as far as I'm concerned
I'm glad I got the chance to say
That I do believe I love you

And if I should ever go away
Well then close your eyes and try
To feel the way we do today
And then if you can remember ...

Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for

Well you came and opened me
And now there's so much more I see
And so by the way I thank you

And then for the times when we're apart
Well then close your eyes and know
These words are coming from my heart
And then if you can remember ...

Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That's what friends are for
In good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for

Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for

Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for

It was said that R.Dean Taylor was one of the first white artists to be signed to Motown records.

He was to reward them with several sucessful singles both in The US and UK.

The most memorable of which were:

Gotta See Jane

A Ghost In My House

and the Classic

Indiana Wants Me!

To be honest this is a best of compilation and it is interesting to see the variety of style and appraoch used here.

He is quite a versatile artist and can demonstrate this by his ability to cover a difficult to cover song like " Two Of Us " by The Beatles from " Let It Be"

CoolCool

I think Solomon Burke had a hit with CCR's Proud Mary. I'll have to check his live album out.
