RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 26-05-2024 LEONARD COHEN "new skin for the old ceremony" cd, 1974 his fourth studio album... had this one in my car for the last few days to give it a few listens and get familiar with it... if there was a criticism it would be that these tracks seem to have a verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure to them as opposed to his earlier style of poetry verses, but still, its no biggie, theyre still great lyrically and thus... I LOVE THIS ALBUM fave is the opening track: RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 28-05-2024 LEONARD COHEN "death of a ladies' man" cd, 1977 his seventh studio album... his signature minimalist instrumentations are gone and we have a soft rock album here... Wiki says he wanted the Spector 'wall of sound' style here and to a degree he does... songs are once again stock standard verse/chorus/verse tracks... still a really good album but one that took a few listens to appreciate but that said I LOVE THIS ALBUM, just not as much as the previous four... was trying to figure out who my favourite track sounds like and i just finally nailed it, Father John Misty from his "chloe" album.. RE: What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 31-05-2024 Was not at all sure where to put Mr Morrison. I've been listening to Inarticulate Speech of the Heart which is by turns both inarticulate and lyrical. It's grown on me. According to what I have read the inarticulate part is more a question of not having to articulate everything you want to convey in actual words, hence a few instrumentals on this album. Or with vocalese but not language. And then I picked up Moondance for the car today, which I have not listened to in aeons. It's a pretty perfect album, IMHO. I first heard this at about 16 years old, sneaking into a friend's older brother's room and playing his records, LOL. It was enchanting. This and Vangelis's China. Huge impressions were made. RE: What Are You Listening To? - JeromeD - 01-06-2024 I remember going to a party in Cape Town many moons ago. We were all knocking back cocktails around the pool in the evening. 'Avalon Sunset' was in the CD player. A perfect evening and the music was absolutely spot on for the occasion. Worth a listen if you have not heard it. RE: What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 01-06-2024 ^Thanks for the reminder Jerome. Haven't listened to that one in ages either so that's happening today, along with No Guru, No Method, No Teacher. Just in a Van Morrison kinda mood! RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 18-06-2024 LEONARD COHEN "various positions" cd, 1984 his seventh studio album... loving most of this album and liking the remainder... love the almost quirky nature of the music which was inspired by an early casio keyboard with preloaded beats and music... had it not been for Hallelujah on here then "the captain" would have been my favourite I LOVE THIS ALBUM fave: RE: What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 18-06-2024 oh yeah The Captain is awesome also love Dance Me To The End Of Love RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 21-06-2024 LEONARD COHEN "im your man" cd, 1988 his eighth studio album, i should have posted them in order but started with the next one and went to "you want it darker" and then backwards again, only his final posthumous album to go... album opens with the horrible "first we take Manhattan" (i love Jennifer Warnes version though)... this album never really gets out of second gear for me, i do like the other seven tracks but nothing really grabs me like it should. for me, this is probably his weakest album, but that said it does make the passing grade (if only just!) I LIKE THIS ALBUM fave for me: RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 24-06-2024 LEONARD COHEN "thanks for the dance" cd, 2019 and to round off my Cohen listens... his final album, released three after his passing... i liked this when i first heard it and nothing has changed, repeated listens give me the feel that theres something missing in it, whether its the instrumentations or even works in progress its hard to say but either way, something doesnt quite fit... still, it isnt too bad, not his worst by any means but a long way from his best... I LIKE THIS ALBUM fave is a lovely piece of poetry IMO RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 26-08-2024 MANFRED MANN "soul of mann" cd 1967 a compilation of mostly instrumental tracks... most if not all, are planted firmly in the jazz/r+b genre... not surprising really considering South African born Mann was a trained jazz musician... some interesting takes on other contemporary songs including "i got you babe", "my generation" and "satisfaction" to name a few... theres nothing i do not like on here and im thinking the reason is the use of the Hammond-B organ, whose sound i love... and surprising as it may sound... I LOVE THIS ALBUM fave is an original tune: |
