Petula Clark  (90)

had no idea she was still alive and kicking but when you realise that she released her debut single, "put your shoes on Lucy", back in 1949 it makes perfect sense...

as much as i love Petula this is still the obvious choice:

great song from a great singer/songwriter.

Happy Birthday to Kit Watkins, born on this day in 1953, in Virginia, USA. Composer and synthesizer wiz – born into a family of accomplished classical pianists and tutored in the same vein.

In his teens, he got involved with bands playing covers of material by Genesis, Yes, ELP, King Crimson, etc., and then went on to join Happy The Man as their keys player. Failing to make a commercial impact, the band fizzled after four albums and Watkins headed for the UK to join Camel, replacing Pete Bardens. After recording I Can See Your House From Here with them, he went solo and what he does is described as progressive-ambient-jazz.

I listened to his album Azure, from 1989, because I like the word (and the colour) – I think that’s because of The Eagle poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson - first recollection I have of learning the word - it painted such a picture in my mind - still does! ...

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

I like his music – going with this track – “Sahara Sonata” …
