RE: What Did You Buy? - CRAZY-HORSE - 26-03-2022 Christmas Gift Card purchases this morning: HOODOO GURUS "chariot of the Gods" (one of my favourite alt rock band's from back in the day, still rocking!) NICK CAVE & WARREN ELLIS "carnage" (released late last year but only just got round to getting it) BAND OF HORSES "things are great" (according to the hype sticker "the third best band in The Carolina's") ![]() FRANZ FERDINAND "hits to the head" (compilation: contains 18 of their previous singles plus 2 brand new tracks) RE: What Did You Buy? - Ruby - 08-04-2022 Surprised this happened! I'd completely forgotten I'd ordered it - 21 August last year!! Took delivery yesterday. My record guy had ordered it at the time but wasn't sure he'd land it at all - ever, so deferred payment until such time as it physically got here. Miracles do still occur - who knew?? Very nice it is too, complete with little packet of seeds (for a bee garden) and a liquid honey-coloured record. Abel Ganz - The Life Of The Honeybee & Other Moments Of Clarity
RE: What Did You Buy? - CRAZY-HORSE - 02-05-2022 ![]() Fontaines DC "skinty fia" (vinyl) as reviewed as a new release in the alternative thread... had three choices of traditional black, yellow or red vinyl... i chose the red because i thought it looked cool with the cover art and inner sleeve. RE: What Did You Buy? - CRAZY-HORSE - 03-05-2022 ![]() PAUL McCARTNEY "the lyrics 1956 to the present" not music but a book... almost 500 pages over two hardback volumes packaged in a superb thick slipcase. released last November but almost AUD $200, and i wasnt going to even entertain it at that price... found it today in Kmart for less than $100 so i just had to get it... it contains the lyrics to around 150 of his songs from 1956-2020, and alongside the lyrics are photographs and Paul's own commentary of the inspiration, writing process and personal memories of the songs. he said in the forward that he doesnt have time to sit and write an autobiography so snippets of his most personal songs is the next best thing. i have only had a quick glance through both volumes so far and there are some simply gorgeous photos that i as a huge fan had never seen before. i read a couple of of the passages for a couple of the songs as he details the 'what, why, when, where and how' of the songs in question and they gave me a whole new perspective of what goes on in a songwriters' mind when composing songs. i did look at one Beatles track and one solo track. it sounded like he has really fond memories of writing with John Lennon. it also sounds like it was a struggle trying to live up to the Beatles legacy, even now, yet often struggling to come up with something that cannnot be construed as being labelled "a Beatles rip-off"... this is going to be a real eye-opening read and i am looking forward to having some down time and really absorbing this project fully. RE: What Did You Buy? - CRAZY-HORSE - 06-05-2022 the last of my Christmas gift card purchases.... JACK WHITE "fear of the dawn" WET LEG "wet leg" WILLIE NELSON "a beautiful time" FATHER JOHN MISTY "Chloe and the next 20th century: FONTAINES D.C. "skinty fia" RE: What Did You Buy? - Ruby - 10-05-2022 I didn't buy it, my daughter did - for Mother's Day ... I know it's told in his voice and unedited, pretty much. He would probably have gone on with it had he been able to - a very sad loss. I actually bought the book for a friend as a birthday gift a few months back and kinda wished at the time that I was getting it for myself, so I'm pleased to have it now! Should be good. ![]() Stealing the blurb from Amazon ... https://www.amazon.com/Scatterling-Africa-My-Early-Years-ebook/dp/B09CNWVL2T ‘There are moments in life that are pure, and which seem to hang in the air, unhitched from the everyday world as we know it. Suspended for a few seconds, they float in their own space and time with their own hidden prospects. For want of a better term, we call these moments “magical” and when we remember them they are cloaked in a halo of special meaning.’ For 14-year-old Johnny Clegg, hearing Zulu street music as plucked on the strings of a guitar by Charlie Mzila one evening outside a corner café in Bellevue, Johannesburg, was one such ‘magical’ moment. The success story of Juluka and later Savuka, and the cross-cultural celebration of music, language, story, dance and song that stirred the hearts of millions across the world, is well documented. Their music was the soundtrack to many South Africans’ lives during the turbulent 70s and 80s as the country moved from legislated oppression to democratic freedom. It crossed borders, boundaries and generations, resonating around the world and back again. Less known is the story of how it all began and developed. Scatterling of Africa is that origin story, as Johnny Clegg wrote it and wanted it told. It is the story of how the son of an unconventional mother, grandson of Jewish immigrants, came to realise that identity can be a choice, and home is a place you leave and return to as surely as the seasons change. RE: What Did You Buy? - JeromeD - 12-05-2022 I regard this as his finest hour - magic stuff. Can play this over and over endlessly. https://youtu.be/a6MBo43Ar58 RE: What Did You Buy? - Ruby - 12-05-2022 ^Yes - magic indeed. RE: What Did You Buy? - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-05-2022 three cheap/discount new vinyl albums today... was the same price as the cd would be and i dont own it on cd. his latest effort form a couple of years ago, again, i dont own it but it was 1/3 the normal retail price. used to own this on vinyl but it got warped beyond repair many years ago, dont own it on cd but was the same price as the cd would be. and to be honest i only purchased it for sentimental value because it was the first Who album i purchased back in the day.
