funnily enough i heard on the radio yesterday afternoon that there is another one of these albums in the works and Hank III has been approached again to help out, i would like to hear him do one of these tracks as he does sound a lot like Hank, especially on that album we heard on that "lovesick,broke & driftin'" album.
glad you listened to the tracks also, as soon as i heard this one i thought "MH needs to hear this one!", and i was dissapointed the Merle track didnt have a link?! i'll keep an ear out for it on youtube for you!

Not much to say. It's a Conway hits album. Only one clunker in Danny Boy. A song you don't want to rock to. Other
than that, a fine compilation, loving six of them. This was released after Conway jumped labels to Elektra. I can
only surmise he took his own songs with him, as these tracks are from his MCA years. As the title suggests, these
were all #1 hits, running from '59 (Danny Boy) to '76 (After All The Good Is Gone), with the most well known being
Hello Darlin' I would think, Dont see that Danny Boy made #1. I think they just slipped that one in on us. A lot of
the big ones are missing, but there was a volume 2. Best for me is a lesser known hit called The Games That Daddies
Play. Most of these are written by Conway. He dried up around this time, at least for me. The man made his mark
though. The album made #21 on the country charts.

just got round to this one..nice 'best track' MH, never heard it before,
really thought "as soon as i hang up the phone" would have got "*" though...real cringe worthy track IMO...probably the only one i dislike on Loretta's "best of" sets i own.

LAURA MARLING "alas, i cannot swim" cd,2008.
debut set from the then 17 year old lass from Reading,NW London....
some magnificent melodies and vocals on this one IMO,
guessing that if you dont like the other two albums then you wont like this one neither, but either way, a talented young individual who has the world at her feet judging by the three albums she has now released.
this album is equal to anything people like Joni Mitchell released in their heyday and well worth the purchase price.
allmusic rates this one 3.5/5 or 2.1 on our rating system here, i am out of tune once again with that website but at least my score is higher than that of allmusic.

BILL MONROE & HIS BLUEGRASS BOYS "the definitive collection" cd,2002.
got this one on mine and MH's sojurn through the deep South in august, actually got this in Nashville,Tennessee...didnt buy many cd's in the US, probably half a dozen at the most....had more important things to do....like keeping hydrated in that heat, not getting lost on interstates and which turn offs to take, Graceland and avoiding speeding tickets(thats another story!)
anyway, back to the cd....
tweny-two tracks from one of the Fathers of Bluegrass music, i knew a couple of his tracks prior to this,the most famous being the original version of "blue moon of kentucky" which i guess most people would only know the Elvis Presley "sun records" version...Elvis' vesion is more uptempo than this sleepy little Bluegrass number, not sure which one i like the best...probably Elvis because, well, because its Elvis i guess....
anyways, a nice all round collection of Bluegrass/Country tunes, not a great album but a good one nevertheless,and regerdless of i will think of the tracks in the years to come will always remind me of my time with Music Head in the States and will hold a special place in my heart forever.
several tracks on here i do not like, several that are brilliant IMO and the rest are pretty good, giving this a nice rating of 2.0....either way it shows the origins of 'real' country music alongside the Hank Williams one i also got in Nashville. one interesting track here is "in the pines" which was covered by Nirvana on their "unplugged" set, but rewritten with slightly different lyrics...well worth a listen IMO

THE AVETT BROTHERS "i and love and you" cd,2009.
MH spoke about these guys when we were on the road, but i never got to hear it until we got to Major Tim's home in Viera,Florida...
the album blew my mind, couldnt wait to get a copy of my own...
well it took a while from the end of August to the end of September before Corey managed to source it for me, he played it in the store and loved it also...bought himself a copy.
so that was two listens..finally got round to listening to it again this afternoon while Dani and I were in downtime from packing up house to move to our own piece of heaven...
Dani isnt too keen on these guys...guess it must be a Pink Floyd fan thing, as they dont like songs without 10 minute wanksy guitar solos!
could have put this one in alternative i guess, but there are a number of country-esque sounds on the first half dozen tracks on this one so i put it here, several tracks here also have a distinct Ben Folds sound to them, and i love him also...

Why our band? Why now? Why Rick Rubin? And when it was announced, back in 2008, that the co-head of Columbia – producer for the likes of Slayer, Metallica, Beastie Boys and Johnny Cash – was to work with North Carolina country-folksters The Avett Brothers, the outcry was predictable. What was not: the end results of said collaboration. Needless to say, any initial protests were soon subdued, misled mutterings consigned to memory.This is an album of surprising tenderness, of intricate (and, importantly, memorable) melodies and deep emotions, and everyman ruminations on love and life that will surely connect with long-standing fans and newcomers alike. Not that The Avett Brothers haven’t opened themselves up before – 2007’s Emotionalism is an accomplished exercise in catharsis of the heart – but here they let their music settle into more of a background role, lyrics taking centre stage. The affect is instant, the aim to pronounce each syllable with absolute clarity, to an almost spoken-word extent at times, paying immediate dividends. On the opening title-track we’re exposed to an essay on those three, so hard-to-say words – never condescending, it’s a heartfelt paean to the ultimate admission of one’s feelings. The marvellous Head Full of Doubt… continues the theme, expressing insecurities with good use of metaphor before delivering simple but effective pay-off lines, for example: “If you’re loved by someone, you’re never rejected.”
The group – brothers Scott and Seth, plus upright bassist Bob Crawford – maintains a relatively sombre pace across this 13-track collection. Indeed, older admirers may wonder where the up-tempo jams of albums like 2003’s A Carolina Jubilee have gone to. The only echoes of this boisterously breezy style are And It Spread and Kick Drum Heart, the latter a particularly sprightly piece that’s at complete compositional odds with the tracks that bookend it: the stripped-right-back acoustic arrangement of Ten Thousand Words, where the only additional colour comes from a delicious Hammond drone, and the similarly understated Laundry Room, as perfectly pretty as the title-track, featuring Benmont Tench on harmonium. Though it barely breaks into a sweat, I and Love and You is the kind of record that spins by fairly swiftly – testament, truly, to the engrossing nature of the majority of its songs. It furthers its makers’ cause in the correct fashion: by expanding their oeuvre at the behest of a major, rather than recycling traits that attracted the label’s attention in the first place. --Mike Diver
