What Did You Buy? - goth metal raver - 16-07-2010

In July I bought:

Van Der Graaf Generator - H to He Who Am the only one

I needed some Prog Rock other than Floyd and Oldfield. from previewing albums I decided I liked King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator better than the other groups. This one was easier to get hold of than In the Court of the Crimson King

Black Sabbath - Vol 4

I used to have this on cassette. When I got rid of all my cassettes I bought a Black Sabbath best of, thinking this would approximate to my ownership of Sabbath's first six albums. But it is woefully inadequate re. Vol 4 so I've been meaning to buy the album again for some time (one of my three favourite Sabbath albums, along with Master of Reality (my absolute fave) and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath)

Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell

I love the song Heaven and Hell and I didn't own any Dio-era Sabbath albums. So I got this one.

Various - Big Tunes back to the 90s

I don't have much House in my collection (only Acid House and Electro House). Aside from Funky House (which I find boring) the type of music most people think of when they hear the word 'House' is cheesy 90s Euro-House. Some of these tracks, even though cheesy, I remember with glee. So I got this compilation. What is love, Free from Desire, You Sure Do, Don't You Want Me, I like to Move It - these tracks are excellent and I remember them fondly. Other tracks I didn't know previously but I also love. Other tracks annoy me because they have that awful Diva-ish, Gospel-ly quality but ho-hum, I'm not a big fan of House music so I already knew I wouldn't like it all.

^^ I have long been a fan of Van Der Graaf Generator .................Peter Hamill is an excellent keyboard player and the whole band is very underrated......................There are some other excellent VDGG albums but after a while they seem to loose their edgeCool.

Right just back from CDshoppingland and managed to get the deluxe version of 'Hergest Ridge' but they were out of copies of 'Ommadawn'. Also picked up 'Music from Big Pink', The Simon and Garfunkel Collection (6 albums for 25 bucks - not bad), and a new ELP CD called 'High Voltage'. Oh well there goes the afternoon.

They are excellent.

I was expecting to be bored by the album. Prog Rock has a reputation for being dull and boring, with long songs and pretentious over-clever structure etc. And certainly I have bought things in the past which are supposed to be classic pieces of work but which I found to be intolerably boring.

Yet despite my fears, I found the album to be thrilling and interesting throughout. I especially like the first two tracks but there is enough interesting stuff in the other tracks that I am confident that they will grow on me also.

Just bought another copy of Vangelis's 'Reprise' album. Original damaged. Superb, epic soundscapes. Highlights - 'Fields of Coral' & 'Come To Me' (Afterglow music!)
