Liberty DeVitto was born on this day in 1950, in New York City. Longtime drummer in the Jelly Bowl's backing band (they had a brief falling out which appears to have been mended) and lately one of The Lords of 52nd Street (which needs no further explanation!). He and the band backed Karen Carpenter on her lone solo album - not a shining moment for her, sad to say, and he's done sessions for several big names - Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Stevie Nicks, Meat Loaf ...

I found this snippet about "The Downeaster Alexa" - https://variety.com/2020/music/news/billy-joel-drummer-liberty-devitto-book-interview-1234709198/

"DeVitto says the song reflects who Joel really is at his core — a guy who enjoys solitude and would rather be sailing. He kept that in mind when the songwriter expressed a desire for the song to encapsulate that atmosphere.

Says DeVitto: “Billy came in and said he wanted it to sound like a boat that goes out on the North Atlantic, so I had to come up with, ‘What does a boat sound like?’ So, I got the snare, and the Tom Toms to create the way waves sound as they go by."

(As an aside - which is a bit rude when referring to such greatness Blush - up to now I had no idea it was the magnificent Itzhak Perlman's violin on this - you live and learn!! Sometimes.)

my favourite live version of this classic:

Tom Johnston - born on this day in 1948, in Visalia, California. One of the founding Doobie Brothers - lead guitar/s and lead and backing vocals as well as a fair proportion of the songwriting - he's also had a solo career about which I know precisely squat, having not done my homework. Big Grin

MADONNA  (64)

love her or hate her, there is no denying her impact on music especially that for young women to enter the industry after her...

here are her incredible singles stats from the UK charts between 1982 and 2009.

8 x  #1 hits
47 x  other top-10 hits
6 x  top-20 hits
1 x  top-40 hits
and two further singles that missed the top-40

anyway,
my favourite single of hers, released in 1998, a #1 hit in the UK and top-5 just about everywhere else on the planet:

KEVIN ROWLAND  (69)

lead vocals for Dexy's Midnight Runners but probably better known in his homeland for his bad attitude and treatment of other musicians and session men.
that said they made a handful of great singles in the early 1980s IMO

this one, their first UK #1:
