RE: What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 21-04-2020

^It's just honest isn't it? No frills. I like it too.

RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 21-04-2020

Geez, once again, Ruby has a way with words..."honest" is the word I was looking for but couldn't find it, thanks.

ROD STEWART "soulbook" cd, 2009

his twenty-fifth studio album,
a covers set of R+B/soul classics.
sounds more easy listening that soul but whatever...
Stevie Wonder, Mary J Blige, Smokey Robinson, Jennifer Hudson all make appearances.
nor generally a fan of covers or covers albums but Rod Stewart always delivers the goods IMO,
he is respectful of the originals and doesn't overdo it, ie: stays within himself vocally.
another multi platinum seller in this late career resurgence for Rod.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

standout, but hey Four Tops are my favourite Motown group

sublime version of this classic:

ROXY MUSIC "Avalon" cd, 1982

their eighth and final album.
never really a big fan, I tend to either love or loathe their songs
and to be honest, theres something about Bryan Ferry that irks me.
so I love half the album, dislike the other half.
that said, the sound quality and overall production on this album is amongst
the best I have ever heard.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

PHIL COLLINS "....but seriously" cd, 1989

soft rock here.
when people ask if I am a fan of Uncle Phil I generally say no
but to be honest i own three on vinyl with three and a compilation on cd
so in all fairness I guess technically...im a fan.
this one follows all the hallmark Collins sounds.
album sold around 15 million worldwide and was the UK's biggest selling album in 1990.
love three or four on this album, liking the rest which means
favourite was a minor hit in Australia and features Croz on guest vocals in this anti-war song.

PHIL COLLINS  "both sides" cd, 1993

his fifth of eight, my fifth and last till the Motown covers set on 2010.
just about everything on this one is slow, without melody and boring like most of Sting's works.
album still sold around 5 million worldwide, a third of the sales of the previous one and follow up album
sold half of that again so I guess I wasn't the only one who gave up on him around this time.
three, maybe four likeable tracks on here but that's it for me
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

MILES DAVIS  "kind of blue" cd, 1959.

i suspect i was given this because i would not have purchased it??!
experts call it 'the greatest jazz album ever', 'most influential jazz album of all time',
and 'one of the most influential albums ever'.
i just don't get it, simple percussion, the odd bit of brass, its doesn't soothe my soul at all.
hey: each to their own, i respect it for what it is but that doesn't mean i have to enjoy it.
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

only thing that comes close for me:

PLATTERS  "golden hits collection" cd, 1988

twenty track compilation.
loving eighteen of the twenty tracks here,
liking the remainder.
just about everything on here would now be called "classic" or "standard"
classy vocal group.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

have to go for the obvious one this time because I want to watch them performing it:

CHRIS REA "the best of..." cd  1994

theres probably only a handful of artists whose compilation albums aren't really any better than their studio albums,
in other words, the quality of their studio albums are classy and Chris is one of those artists IMO.
was listening to the album and one track stood out this time, not because it is better than the others but because Ruby
posted it a few weeks ago and both myself and MH had not heard of the album, well, that may be true but the title track of that
album is on this album (linked below).

so, seventeen tracks, fifteen are pure class, the other two aren't far off it, LOL.
yet again, a joy to listen to!
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

COUNTING CROWS  "august and ever after" cd, 1993

American alt-rock/rock band,
Soft Rock seems best to put them for me.
their debut.
over ten million worldwide sales
their biggest by far.
lots of catchy tunes on here.
nothing to dislike but plenty to like.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

fave, and lead off single:
