What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 09-03-2009 I'm tired of explaining why I post stuff here which doesn't strictly fit in a Jazz, Funk, & Blues board. From now on I'm going to post anything that fits under a loose "Roots" banner in here, sans apology. If this causes anyone a problem, for the last time, sorry... Baaba Maal & Mansour Seck - Djam Leelii Senegalese singers, each armed with acoustic guitars. The guitars intertwine, and the overall effect is mesmerising. Lovely... What Are You Listening To? - trbc08 - 09-03-2009 I watched a video of John Coltrane's quartet performing "My Favorite Things." It blew my mind... The way he completely obliterated the melody and then soloed for the rest of the seven minutes was amazing. It was far more evil and dark than any "metal" music or anything of that sort that I've ever heard. What Are You Listening To? - trbc08 - 13-03-2009 "The Bird" by Charlie Parker. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 13-03-2009 Lonnie Johnson With Elmer Snowden - Blues & Ballads I'd never heard of Lonnie Johnson until watching a Buddy Holly anniversary documentary a few weeks ago. Johnson was a guitar influence on Holly, and some of his music was included in the film. It really caught my ear, & I'd describe it as mellow acoustic blues. According to the CD notes, Johnson was working in a hotel, and Snowden hadn't recorded for 26 years when this was cut in 1960. Johnson had a very rich musical career, including working with Duke Ellington & Louis Armstrong. How could someone used to working with that calibre of musician drift into obscurity ?? What Are You Listening To? - trbc08 - 14-03-2009 Listening to John Zorn's "IAO." I put this in jazz, but it's essentially a clever amalgamation of styles (thus far). What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 18-03-2009 Taj Mahal - The Right Stuff Early 70's live set recorded at the Fillmore East. Blues/Soul music with lots of brass... What Are You Listening To? - Beach - 27-03-2009 I'm listening to an old mate of mine from Melbourne, Carl Pannuzzo - one of the best motherfucking singers I ever heard. Shirley and I first caught Carl playing drums and singing with his band, Checkerboard Lounge (now Checkerboard) at the Great Britain Hotel in Richmond on our first visit to Melbourne back in November 1989 and went back to hear them playing whenever we could if we were there. Carl was also part of my band, The Blue Mountains Blues Whalers when we did a Melbourne Cup Night gig at the Limerick Arms Hotel in Melbourne in 1991 with an expanded line-up that included himself and a young lady whom I cannot recall the name of anymore. What Are You Listening To? - JonG - 28-03-2009 Jorge Ben - Errare Humanun Est from A Tabua de Esmeralda [Philips, 1974] I'm not quite sure if samba music fits here but I don't know where else to put it. Quote:The music that Ben recorded during this period had tremendous influence on Brazilian musicians at that time and to a great extent helped to ignite the creative explosion that took place in the Brazilian samba rock and samba soul scenes during the '70s. The sound on this particular album is very simple, with the songs being driven by Ben's characteristic acoustic guitar playing together with a bass guitar and percussion.- allmusic.com What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 02-04-2009 Nina Simone - Anthology Fabulous 2-disc compilation covering most of her career. Some of the earlier material really shows what a great voice she had. Almost all of the songs have a weight & gravity that make for a great listen. What Are You Listening To? - Beach - 02-04-2009 This morning I've been listening to Aussie 'Blues/Roots' band Ghost Road who are sharing the bill with us at the Gosford City Blues Festival on June 6, 2006. Great sounding band! |
