Randy's second album, a good effort but not even close to his best. Only well known song would be Mama Told Me Not To Come, a hit for Three Dog Night. I usually prefer originals, but not here. TDN gave it some much needed oomph. Only love track here for me is Old Kentucky Home. Not the traditional song you may know, although he does steal a few lines. Wiki describes the songs on this album as rock 'n roll, R & B, folk, jazz, blues and country. Take that genre police. High praise from the critics followed this release, so I must have missed something. Certainly not the first time. Three songs did nothing for me, giving the album a low like rating. Randy's lyrics probably save it, as most of the music is too stripped down, with piano front and center. Became a big fan of the man, but not with this album.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Let's Burn Down The Cornfield

Best Track - Old Kentucky Home

Turpentine and dandelion wine
I've turned the corner and I'm doin' fine
Shootin' at the birds on the telephone line
Pickin' em off with this gun of mine
I got a fire in my belly
And a fire in my head
Goin' higher and higher
Until I'm dead
Sister Sue, she's short and stout
She didn't grow up - she grew out
Mama says she's plain but she's just bein' kind
Papa thinks she's pretty but he's almost blind
Don't let her out much 'cept at night
But I don't care 'cause I'm all right
Oh, the sun shines bright on
My Old Kentucky Home
And the young folks roll on the floor
Oh, the sun shines bright on
My Old Kentucky Home
Keep them hard times away from my door
Brother Gene, he's big and mean
And he don't have much to say
He had a little woman who he whupped each day
But now she's gone away
He got drunk last night
Kicked mama down the stairs
But I'm all right so I don't care

Ghosts of the Great Highway-Sun Kil Moon

I would say that this indie folk rock masterpiece manages to beat Neil Yound at his own game, but 'm afraid Crazy-Horse will try and kill me

NICK DRAKE "bryter layter" cd,1970.

Drake was supposedly one of the original British Folksters from back n the day, but sadly for him, he only released a couple of albums before tragically overdosing on prescription medication for his depression in 1974...some say it was suicide, others an accident...guess we'll never know but it all adds to the mythical persona, thus increasing his immortality in the scheme of things...
seven reasonably folky type ballads on this one and three i didnt like, including two dumbass instrumentals...so, i dont like instrumentals for the most part by whoever makes them, Paul Weller spent a bit of time listening to Drake prior to recording his 2008 album "22 dreams", and it shows, his folky material on that one, including the instrumentals have a Nick Drake kinda feel to them..and i wasnt overly impressed with the Weller ones either.
love the dreamy, fragile vocals of Drake though, they all add feeling and emotion to his well formed lyrics, the problem is, is that he lacks variation in much the same way as Laura Marling does now.
overall, not a bad album,it is pleasant on the ears...so relaxing infact that it has the ability to send the listening pretty close to nodding off!

Randy's debut album and he never equaled it for me. Love seven of these ten tracks, and a favorite could change day
to day. Not many studio albums would come out that high, once you get by Cohen, Dylan, and the Beatles. Maybe some
possum. Almost as good as the music on here, is the album cover. Black and white probably makes it even better. We
have a general store that looks pretty close to that not far from here. We call them general stores around here,
not convenience stores. Actually the one here can't be convenient for too many folks. About halfway between the
boondocks and the road to nowhere. Complete with a Mail Pouch sign and with what looks like those same old men
sittin' on the porch. They always wave when you drive by. Don't know them, don't need to, everybody waves around
here. Things don't change much out in the country. That's the way we like it. Back to the music. You don't find
much new traditional sounding country music anymore, even in 1986 it was rare. This album is about as close as you
get. Four singles were released, with Diggin' Up Bones and On The Other Hand both making #1 country and the album
doing the same. Punch A1 on my cerebral jukebox and you're likely to pick up one of these songs.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - My Heart Cracked (But It Did Not Break)

Best Track - On The Other Hand

On one hand I count the reasons, I could stay with you
And hold you close to me, all night long.
So many lover's games, I’d love to play with you
On that hand there’s no reason, why it's wrong

But on the other hand, there's a golden band
To remind me of someone who would not understand
On one hand I could stay and be your lovin’ man
But the reason I must go is on the other hand

In your arms I feel the passion, I thought had died
When I looked into your eyes, I found myself
When I first kissed your lips, I felt so alive
I've got to hand it to you girl, you're something else

But on the other hand, there's a golden band
To remind me of someone who would not understand
On one hand I could stay and be your lovin’ man
But the reason I must go is on the other hand

Yea the reason I must go is on the other hand

Ade Edmondson's band with their second album, from 2010.

Picked this up at their gig on Friday. A good collection of Folkified Punk era classics.

They play it straight, so this has to be a Folk album. Obviously they're all covers, so that would put many off this album, but it works really well IMV.

The Ramones medley is a blast !!

Not scored by AllMusic.

VARIOUS ARTISTS "the lost notebooks of hank williams" cd,2011.

Corey handed this one to me some months ago, heard it then and just revisited it today...
these tracks here are a collection of unfinished songs that Hank wrote in four notebooks during his short life.
they were offered to Bob Dylan back in the late 1960s by the Williams family, but it wasnt until 2004 that Bob actually got round to buying them, a condition of sale was that if they were ever recorded that they would have to be done so in a Hank style as a mark of respect to the father of modern country music.
so, in 2010 with help from holly williams, hanks grand daughter, Dylan assembled a group of artists who were big Hank fans to put their own spin on these lyrics, strangely enough, Hanks grandson Hank III refused to take part in the process...whatever, thats his loss IMO!
anyway what we end up with is a group of twelve tracks recorded in the best possible way to honour the memory of Hank Williams.
i know no-one here is going to listen to these except Music Head, so MH, listen to as many as time allows you to...they are well worth it mate, just a shame theres no link for the Merle track though!
