Politics - Oceansoul - 08-11-2016 Sorry for not explaining what I meant. Being a "red state" means the majority of the voters tend to vote Republican or support the Republican Party whereas being a "blue state" means the majority of voters tend to vote or support the Democratic Party, so not a reference to rednecks. Basically, our Electoral College Electors have a high chance of giving their votes to Trump regardless of my vote. Trump is running as a Republican. Politics - MFS - 08-11-2016 Thanks for explaining... Colors being switched compared to what it's like here... Do you never use right or left wing parties and such expressions in US politics when talking about political ideologies? Politics - Oceansoul - 08-11-2016 No problem! Yes, right wing and left wing are political party ideological terms used here. Generally speaking, right wing denotes the Republican Party and left wing denotes the Democratic Party. You can technically be right wing or left wing leaning as well. I'm a left wing voter since I'm a Liberal Democrat. Politics - Oceansoul - 08-11-2016 The Electoral College plays a role in who is elected President, not just the popular vote by the majority of voters. Each US state has a different number of delegate votes to give and those votes tend to go to the candidate who wins the popular vote and the Electoral College elects their choice for President based on that result. For instance, Missouri has 10 electoral votes to give to the winning candidate of the state for President so Trump will likely be the choice of my state due to how Republican leaning most of Missouri is and the Electors will give their votes to Trump to win. I'm not saying my vote is pointless per se, each vote counts actually. There needs to be more than mine alone though. There are "swing" states (meaning they can go either direction: Hillary or Trump), which includes the US states of Florida, Ohio, New Hampshire, Colorado, Nevada, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Virginia, etc. These are the "battleground" states the news is talking about, they have the most votes to give, especially combined and play a pivotal role in who is elected President. 270 is the bare minimum number of Electoral votes that is required to win for a candidate to become President based on the popular vote, the majority available to win is 538. Politics - SteveO - 08-11-2016 Should be an interesting night for a political junkie like myself! I wonder if the election results will be finalized tonight or will it drag on like the Bush Gore battle in Florida in 2000? Politics - Oceansoul - 08-11-2016 I wish today would be a smooth election, but it's not looking like it will be right now. The Trump campaign is trying to throw a lawsuit at Nevada claiming voter fraud which is being denied by a judge there. His campaign is also being hit with a lawsuit from North Carolina for voter intimidation. This election is quite unusual so it's hard to say exactly what will happen. Looks like some Millennial voters and Latino voters are coming out to vote in higher numbers in Florida. mile:
Politics - MFS - 09-11-2016 Thanks again, appreciate your lesson Seems quite similar the election process here - and probably many other places as well, I guess Florida and Ohio to Trump... Important victories for him... Didn't like those news Politics - Jerome - 09-11-2016 Well, well, well - I would not have thought that I would have woken up to this, this morning. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/elections/2016/presidential-election-headquarters Just goes to prove - polls mean nothing. At the end of the day it comes down to the electorate. Politics - CRAZY-HORSE - 09-11-2016 and with the "American idiot" on the verge of winning the election $47 billion in shares have been wiped on our Stock Exchange! http://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/us-election-dollar47-billion-wiped-off-australian-stock-market-as-trump-gains-in-polls/ar-AAk4t2Z?li=AAgfYrC Politics - Jerome - 09-11-2016 CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:and with the "American idiot" on the verge of winning the election $47 billion in shares have been wiped on our Stock Exchange!
