RE: What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 04-04-2021 ... and then I felt like some John Denver so listened to Windsong, primarily for "Calypso" and then trawled around a few more of his songs as well ... Which led me to Arlo Guthrie because of "City of New Orleans" ... even although that was not written by him, and from there on to ... and finally - before getting deeply entrenched in JJ Cale which was quite tempting, moved on to something completely different ... RE: What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 04-04-2021 ^^ Paris 1919 love it RE: What Are You Listening To? - vincent - 04-04-2021 Terri Gibbs https://youtu.be/wZmiou7BI3I concrete blonde https://youtu.be/OdpTcvSn8HQ always liked these two somgs RE: What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 05-04-2021 (04-04-2021, 17:22)Music Head Wrote: ^^I actually meant the other Cale - but I hear ya - "Andalucia" is a really good song. Not very well acquainted with the rest of it yet. Listening to J.J. Cale's 5 now - super laidback - virtually horizontal ... favourite for today is "Sensitive Kind" - fab song - great instrumentation and arrangements too. And then this, played and sung by MK on the tribute album The Breeze ... closely aligned sounds, the two of them. Only recorded as a demo by Cale - a properly heartfelt one too, I have to say. (Posting the side by side aforementioned demo and MK versions in this link because I might never find it again! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fisafBYWecM) RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 07-05-2021 ![]() WILLIE NELSON "across the borderline" cd, 1993 his fortieth solo album... four originals written by him, another co written with Uncle Bob, the rest covers... duets with Paul Simon, Bonnie Raitt, Sinead O'Connor and Mr Dylan... love "dont give up", superb cover with Sinead, fave is the Dylan duet... also features Croz and Kris on backing vocals and produced by Don Was... another consistantly great album from Willie... I LOVE THIS ALBUM fave: (well worth a listen if youve not heard it before!) There's a home place under fire Tonight in the heartland And the bankers are taking my home And my land from me. There's a big achin' hole in my chest Now, where my heart was And a hole in the sky Where God used to be. There's a home place under fire Tonight in the heartland There's a well where the water's so bitter Nobody can drink. Ain't no way to get high and my mouth Is so dry that I can't speak Don't they know that I'm dyin' Why's nobody cryin' for me?. My American dream Fell apart at the seams You tell me what it means You tell me what it means. There's a home place under fire Tonight in the heartland And bankers are taking the homes And the land away. There's a young boy closin' his eyes Tonight in the heartland Who will wake up a man with some land And a loan he can't pay. His American dream Fell apart at the seams You tell me what it means You tell me what it means My American dream Fell apart at the seams You tell me what it means You tell me what it means. There's a home place under fire Tonight in the heartland...... RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 24-05-2021 ![]() ELVIS PRESLEY "elvis now" vinyl, 1972. his sixteenth studio in sixteen years plus all those stupid movie soundtracks he did... country sounding for the most part including a terrible country style version of Hey Jude, man that was bad! at least the UK'ers were still loyal to their king with it peaking at #12 out there and the single "until its time for you to go" peaking at #5, the same really cant be said for elsewhere with the album rarely bothering the charts elsewhere... i thought it was a great album with very good versions of "we can make the morning", "help me make it through the night", "put your hand in the hand", "miracle of the rosary", "early morning rain" and "fools rush in", all of which were/are as good as any version of the songs out there IMO. as i said, only letdown was the abysmal Hey Jude cover.... all up, i know its mainly a covers album but Presley was at his vocal peak between 68-74 IMO... I LOVE THIS ALBUM RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 11-07-2021 ![]() a blast from the past today with The Boss' sixth studio album Nebraska from 1982... folk or Americana, call it what you want to... an acoustic affair, a concept album of sorts... all songs deal with the sombre topic of death and/or murder... songs about murding for love, death row imnates, suicide etc, you get it, right?!... a masterpiece IMO, but then i rate all of his albums up to and including this one as masterpieces... I LOVE THIS ALBUM i really genuinely do not have a favorite track on this album, love 'em all so heres the closing track: Seen a man standing over a dead dog Lying by the highway in a ditch He's looking down kinda puzzled Poking that dog with a stick Got his car door flung open He's standing out on Highway 31 Like if he stood there long enough That dog'd get up and run Struck me kinda funny Seemed kinda funny, sir, to me Still, at the end of every hard day People find some reason to believe Now, Mary Lou loved Johnny With a love mean and true She said, "Baby, I'll work for you everyday" And bring my money home to you One day, he up and left her And ever since that She waits down at the end of that dirt road For young Johnny to come back Struck me kinda funny Funny, yeah, indeed How at the end of every hard-earned day People find some reason to believe Take a baby to the river "Kyle William," they called him Wash the baby in the water Take away little Kyle's sin In a whitewashed shotgun shack An old man passes away Take the body to the graveyard And over him, they pray Lord, won't you tell us Tell us—what does it mean? At the end of every hard-earned day People find some reason to believe Congregation gathers Down by the riverside Preacher stands with a bible Groom stands waiting for his bride Congregation gone and the sun sets Behind a weeping willow tree Groom stands alone and watches the river rush on So effortlessly Wondering Where can his baby be Still, at the end of every hard-earned day People find some reason to believe RE: What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 19-09-2021 June Tabor, Huw Warren and Iain Bellamy, aka Quercus on their first album with ECM, Quercus. June Tabor is brilliant - she takes English folk to new level, and the others are excellent too - piano and sax respectively. I listened to Quercus and their second one with Mr Eicher & Co - Nightfall. Had had enough by the time I got halfway through Nightfall - there's only so much seriousness one can digest in one day! This is beautiful music, make no mistake but I could use something light and frothy now, or loud and rambunctious, to balance it all out! Hmmmm .... RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 04-10-2021 ![]() TANYA TUCKER "delta dawn" cd, 1972 from the newly purchased 4 album set i purchased... her debut... had no idea she was only 13 on this one until i Wiki'd the album... lots of songs about love, sex, viginity and relationships from a female point of view... all good stuff until you you relaise she was 13 which makes it a bit uncomfortable and creepy at times and it shows how 'sexualised' the industry made her at that young age... get around the age thing and it is still a fantastic album IMO I LOVE THIS ALBUM the hit single Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on Could it be a faded rose from days gone by? And did I hear you say he was a-meeting you here today To take you to his mansion in the sky? She's forty-one and her daddy still calls her, 'baby' All the folks around Brownsville say she's crazy 'Cause she walks down town with a suitcase in her hand Looking for a mysterious dark-haired man In her younger days they called her Delta Dawn Prettiest woman you ever laid eyes on Then a man of low degree stood by her side And promised her he'd take her for his bride Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on Could it be a faded rose from days gone by? And did I hear you say he was a-meeting you here today To take you to his mansion in the sky? RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 05-10-2021 ![]() TANYA TUCKER "what's your mama's name" cd, 1973 her second of twenty-five... aged fourteen here... two US Country chart #1's on htis album ( the title track and "blood red and goin' down") more variety on this one with country, bluegrass, rock, blues and gospel... another excellent album from Ms Tucker with brilliant backing vocals from the legendary Jordanaires... I LOVE THIS ALBUM That Georgia sun was blood red and goin' down That Georgia sun was blood red and goin' down Daddy said, "Now come girl We're headed down the road to Augusta" And frankly through his clenched teeth He called Mama's name and then he cussed her He said, "Girl, you're young But some dude has come along and stole your mother" But you can't steal a willin' mind 'Cause mama's always lookin' for a lover That Georgia sun was blood red and goin' down That Georgia sun was blood red and goin' down With dusty teardrops on his face My daddy cried an' big steps he was takin' Halfway runnin' to keep up My shorter legs were so tired and shakin' "Where did I go wrong, girl? Why would she leave us both this way?" At times like these, a child of ten Never knows exactly what to say That Georgia sun was blood red and goin' down That Georgia sun was blood red and goin' down We searched in every barroom An' honky-tonk as well An' finally daddy found them And Lord, you know, the rest is hard to tell He sent me out to wait But scared I looked back through the door An' daddy left them both Soakin' up the sawdust on the floor |
