Holy Bible-Manic Street Preachers

If you don't listen to this album, your ears will punish you in the afterlife. It is one of the ten greatest albums ever made imo

Got some tickets to see Jeff Mangum in November - beyond excited.

Debut album from Toronto band, from 2007.

Freebie from Robbie. He accidentally ordered two copies, and rather than return the spare, he donated it to me.

This band managed to change their name from Friday Morning's Regret just as this was released, so some copies went out under the original name. The band name is taken from one of the tracks here, and the album title from another.

Alt-Folk-Country of a high calibre, although there are a few Rockers on the album. An assured set of very good songs.

Not scored by AllMusic.

Third album for this New York band, from 2007.

One of a slew of Post-Punk revivalists from the noughties, with the vocals having more than a passing resemblance to those of Joy Division's Ian Curtis.

I sort of dismissed this when I first heard it, but like all good music it's a definite grower. A grand, and slightly gloomy album.

AllMusic 3/5 stars.

Second album from New York band, from 1993.

This is markedly different from what was to follow. They've carved themselves a career as a fine band who produce fairly laid-back Alt-Rock, but this alternates between unusual melodies, and storms of guitar squall.

Not as accessible as their later work, but still very enjoyable.

Second album from Vancouver band, from 2001.

Recommended ages ago on here by an ex-member.

Gentle, mostly acoustic Alt-Rock. Doesn't stand out particularly from other similar albums, but what it does, it does very well.

1990 debut from American band.

For the first half of this album, MS wear their '60s influences proudly on their sleeves. There's a string of Velvet Underground-alikes, plus a Doors-alike, then a couple of subdued Blues tunes. The second half is much less obvious in it's influences.

As ever, Hope Sandoval's narcotic voice can soothe away all your troubles, even when she's singing about gloom...

Another listen for this album, from 2006.

Provocative Industrial-Lite interpretations of genuine National Anthems from around the globe. The album holds a mirror up to the sentiments expressed in the originals, and asks questions about nationalism (I think...).

Second album, from 1999. Recommended on here ages ago by a lapsed MD member.

Middling paced Alt-Rock that doesn't do anything revolutionary, but the quality is uniformly high. Good album.

AllMusic 3+/5 stars.
