Another strange occurence. Just listened to Tommy Shaws new album online yesterday, then I pull out a Styx album this morning. The groups seventh album and well on their way to superstar status. Three different members take on lead vocals. I can't really tell the difference between Shaws and DeYoungs voices. Both have that high pitched sound. James Young gets a shot on Miss America which is one of my favs. Best goes to the classic Come Sail Away. That was a #8 here in the states and the album reached #7. Another single of Fooling Youself could only manage #29. Four love tracks and the wasted reprise of the title track just pushes this to the love status.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - The Grand Finale

Best Track - Come Sail Away

I'm sailing away,
Set an open course for the virgin sea,
'Cause I've got to be free,
Free to face the life that's ahead of me,
on board, I'm the captain, so climb aboard,
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore,
And I'll try, Oh Lord I'll try, to carry on

I look to the sea,
Reflections in the waves spark my memory,
Some happy, some sad,
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had,
We lived happily forever, so the story goes,
But somehow we missed out on the pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can to carry on

A gathering of angels appeared above my head,
They sang to me this song of hope and this is what they said,
They said come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me lads,
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me lad,
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me,
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me babe,
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me

I thought that they were angels, but much to my surprise,
We climbed aboard their starship, we headed for the skies
come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me lads
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me...

I would have thought this rockabilly king would have scored a little higher than this. His career is indeed legendary, heightened of course by his tragic plane crash fate. Who knows where he would have taken us beyond that short 3 year span of his heyday. Some big hits here, but it probably would have done much better as a single album. My biggest problem with Holly was that hiccuping sound which got to be annoying. Picky, I know. Saw some bio movie which I thought was pretty good, Buddy played by Gary Bussey. Gotta go with that last track as my fav, even though I remember it better by Peter & Gordon. Both versions are excellent and it is a Holly song. The only track on here that goes beyond a 3 piece I think. Another Holly composition of Not Fade Away completely flops. Guess the Stones version was too imbedded in my brain. Same with Words Of Love. How could the Beatles version be topped? Some excellent vintage stuff on those live clips, and check out that 78 rpm on track #9.

Best Track - True Love Ways

Just you know why - why you and I
will by and by - know true love ways

Sometimes we’ll sigh - sometimes we’ll cry
and we’ll know why just you and I know true love ways

Throughout the days our true love ways
will bring us joys to share with those who really care

wow! im very surprised to see Buddy only score 2.0 for a best-of set????

i think the four "*" are valid, would've expected more "***" but you did pick "true love ways" as your top track so all is forgiven!

im not a big Cliff Richard fan but he did a respectable version of "true love ways" in 1983, reached #8 in the UK, #35 in Australia

PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS "red rose speedway" 1973, vinyl and cd. #5 UK, #1 US, #1 Aust.

a very good and also often overlooked Macca album(most of his albums are overlooked imo!),it was his fourth long playing release after the Beatles imploded and his second with his band Wings.
although it is a bit light musicwise,as in being relatively quiet and relaxed, it does contain several absolute classic tracks:
"one more kiss" is a country tinged 'apology' song to the one he loves.
"when the night" and " get on the right thing" are fantastic bluesy rockers...done PM's way
"little lamb dragonfly" is a beautiful folky tune, very Beatle-esque.
and then there are several great piano based tracks, "single pigeon" could have been a 'white album' track IMO, there's a four piece medley of obviously unfinished tracks put together like his side two of 'abbey road' album, and of course the other great piano track is probably the finest love song ever written in "my love".
the only dissapointing track on the album is the stupid, dumbass instrumental "loup(first indian on the moon)....believe me, i absolutely love everything Macca releases...even that "we all stand together" thing with the Frog Chorus, but for such a talented musician/writer i cannot understand his need to put crap like "loup" on an album, fair enough, record them, get them out of his system and shelve them for your personal use Paul!

nb: Tiggi you said once before you dont know many of Macca's 'classic' album tracks, so listen to the ones i rated "***", you may be surprised of the quality of his album tracks over some of the singles he releases, especially the 10 minute medley!...enjoy

hey CH
been meaning to ask you
I was surprised when you posted Band On The Run, that it was not your favorite Mac album.
What is?

What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 31-03-2011

I've listened to the clips indicated Crazyman, and they didn't do a lot for me. There may be a couple of reasons for this:

- Listening over the laptop usually leaves me underwhelmed
- Familiarity. I'm a firm believer that the more you hear music, the more you grow to like it.

In my view, PM was the true writing genius in The Beatles, and everyone of my generation grew up hearing their music all over the radio, and most grew to love the songs. It's never quite the same when you hear things for the first time, with some exceptions.

There's nothing there that I disliked, but neither did they set me on fire. Thanks for the heads up, anyway.

PM is a bit of a knob these days IMHO...

Fan-club-only CD freebie.

Another live Enid album. Not greatly different from the recent Birmingham Town Hall set, it's just a bit shorter. At this price, and being 80 minutes long, it would be churlish to complain.

Equal parts old favourites, and selections from their current studio effort. All very good, and highly enjoyable.

AllMusic probably won't ever score this album...

it is a very good album, i think maybe over playing it a lot has put a dampner on it for me over the years. it did still rate quite high though
right now i'd say:

Venus and Mars, Flowers In The Dirt, Tug Of War, Back To The Egg, Driving Rain & Memory Almost Full....all spring immediately to mind.

pretty much like all his albums except "wildlife" and "speed of sound"...both of which we differ on opinion.

fair enough Tiggi, the best music IMO grows on me over time, and yes, i agree... he is a bit of a knob nowadays, he has always come across to be quite cocky IMO also.

ELVIS PRESLEY "i got lucky" 1971, i got the 1978 re-issue vinyl.

this album was a gap filler, put out by RCA records in 1971 to try to cash in on Elvis' resurgance as a performer.
none of the tracks are new songs, but rather selected tracks taken from several of his films, including "viva las vegas", "kid galahad" and "easy come, easy go"....they are pretty good selections from these movies as far as Elvis' movie songs go, yes!, they are not classic Elvis songs in the sense of his bug hits, but they are no worse than many of the songs sang by other people in musical movies of the 1960's.
the whole album clocks in at just over 20 minutes, which is very short even for back in the day, whatever!, it is Elvis Presley, and his music is to me what Cohen is to Music Head.
