Stephen Harper, a Conservative, is a shady piece of work ! He fired his assistant for paying a Senator 90K to help him get out of a fraud charge. Our honest PM denies he knew anything about it! Still under investigation by the RCMP, haven't heard anything about it for months! He is always absent from Question Period for the most part, away on trips for Canada's economic benefit and even members of his party say he is an absolute control freak....that's why no one buys the fact at he knew nothing about his right hand man paying the Senator's bill for illegal expense claims! Cut off offices for the poor war veterans and does nothing for the poor and starving people here in wonderful Canada, possibly the highest taxed democracy in the world! The native reservations are a mess structurally and he has the audacity to say Canada's economy is in great shape...yeah lots of minimum and part time jobs...big deal!...that's just for starters...oh yeah the Atlantic Provinces are always looking for handouts...that went over well. There's an election next year and the rich buggers in Ontario will probably vote him in again with a minority instead of a majority then the fun starts all over again as he won't compromise with the other two major parties so off we go to the polls again!...lol

Believe it or not Steve doesn't sound like much difference between your government and ours. We have got some crooks locally and nationally running our city and country. No wonder the world is in the shape it is in. The city council gets in office here and we can't get them out because their votes are bought and paid for. Our city is in a mess. We have one of the most dangerous bridges in the country but they can spend money to plant trees that the hurricanes are just going to blow down (real smart!!). My mom can't live on what she gets from the government so we have to help her and just about all the load is on me and Barney yet my brother gets a "crazy" check to stay drunk every month. Something needs to be done about people here getting checks that don't deserve them yet the older folks are in need of help. I could go on and on but as you see it is a mess here too!!

Sounds exactly like the situation up here, Reb ! The royals are here for only 4 days !!!! Spending millions on them for bs wine and dine, flights and walk abouts ! It makes my blood curdle since it isn't the Queen or William and Kate ! Prince Charles and his wife Camilla....:frown:

Hmmm,Royal Tours....
im what they call a "republican" here, i despise the british royal family, even though i was born in the UK!
a "republican" is someone who wants to get rid of the royal family as "head of state" and become a Republic.
every couple of years here there is a political debate over the subject, public opinion is always evenly divided over the issue.

like you SteveO...i cant understand why our Government spends millions of dollars each visit for them to come here for "meet and greets","walk-a-bouts", lay a wreath at a couple of war cemetaries etc etc...
i think William and Harry are probably nice people as far as "the house of windsor" goes, but why should we pay for their little sojurns over the world!

this may sound vindictive, but, i was glad when Diana died...i actually thought they would lose popularity when that happened and Camilla came back into the fold, and they did for a short while, but William and Harry have singlehandedly revitalised their fortunes IMO.

Politics - CRAZY-HORSE - 19-05-2014

oh yeh...
i forogt to mention why i exactly despise them...
well basically,
its the fact that they "command respect", IMO, you earn respect in life, you are not born with it!

I heard someone say (can't remember who) that the Queen and her family are just welfare recipients since they really don't have a job. As far as our government goes I wish the government would change and do away with the parties and stop this Liberal and Conservative bickering. It's only hurting our country!! Just let us vote for the better person for the job and let us all try and get along.

Oh, one more thing. I signed up for my Social Security yesterday (62 in August) and you would not believe all the young people down there some with kids who were getting SS. Don't know why our government can not see what is going on!! More young people than older in there. Disgusting!! People are just robbing the government and they are sitting back letting it happen.

Politics - jazzboCR - 20-05-2014

Social Security was never meant to be just for retirees, as can be told from its full name--Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance. Please don't go with a "Blame the Victim" edge and do trust the SS workers with being discriminating enough to turn away or even prosecute fraudsters. If you want a real shame it's these: only money earned from labor is taxed, not capital AND nothing over $114,000 is taxed. If it was extended to cover more earnings from capital and the earnings limit abolished, we could cut the rate to 1-2% and be just awash in SS fund money. It is the way it is because of various and sundry political deals cut over the years so we'd have at least something.

Oh, and about England's Royal Family--they are not welfare recipients in the commonly-used meaning of the term. They are rentiers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rentier This is increasingly common in Corporate Capitalism, patent trolls being a prominent example but monopolies/oligopolies are thriving too. It's that extra money we pay because somebody controls the supply and thus the price, usually of a necessity or very highly desired can't-imagine-life-without-it good (think: cable TV or Internet distro). I'm not a Socialist, I'm a "constrained capitalist". Corporate welfare assuredly exists (and is a growing problem) but this is not an example of it.

my bad--dupliate post.

the UK royal Family used to get income from the UK Govt because it was estimated that half of all UK tourism was derived around their existance, but that stopped a few years ago.
the Govt used to also pay for the upkeep of their castles/palaces etc because they owned them, the Family were custodians of the property which was deemed as being "owned by England".
nowadays, the Royal Family have to work in order to derive income...
now work would generally mean(in their case) being on boards of companies, selling their image to promote charities...that sort of thing.
but the younger Royals do tend to have menaingful employment ie: Harry spent time after his military training as a helicopter/chopper pilot, he actually completed several tours of duty in the Mid-East(afghanastan/iraq) and yes, he was on the 'front lines' with the rest of the guys and not in some well secured bunker away from the fighting which is why i believe a lot of non=royalists actually admire him for not taking the easy way out with his so-called "god given birthright".
he has also completed chartity events(like walking to the South and North Poles) to raise monies for disabled military vets etc. his name alone would have probably doubled the donations alone....he seems like a good lad who is trying to live as normal a life as he can. he is often seen at Rugby matches in the stands witht he average punters chanting for the team he supports and drinking beer with the lads also.
