Never heard of The Veterans until now! "there aint no age for rock and roll" * is a fun tune , a novelty tune. The second track is better! I am wondering if this band's members went their separate ways and ended up with another band?

CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:THE VETERANS "there aint no age for rock and roll" b/w "nigel, gold grows old" 1984

cant find any evidence these guys ever had any other chart entries anywhere apart from this single...im assuming they're English because of the old-time/dance hall sounds that are happening...
"a" side...what a piece of crap!, cant believe i bought this rubbish and cant believe it got to #4 on the charts, "b" side is slightly better and makes a passing grade...

I liked them both Crazy mate! The tracks remind me of The Beatles and Macca! Paul is quite the performer and song writer! It's a shame that he isn't well known in North America!

CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:THE STYLE COUNCIL "waiting" b/w "francoise" 1987

two TSC singles close together with another to follow after this one...
i used to like the "a" side but time has diminished my liking for it, it came off the abysmal "cost of loving" album...
"b" side is just as mind numbingly boring as the "a" side...
single failed to chart here and was the first single Weller released not to make the UK top40...just about says it all IMO

Two more gems!!!!!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:THE BEATLES "the ballad of john and yoko" b/w "old brown shoe" 1969

next up, another Beatle single...
the "a" side was recorded by John and Paul,George and Ringo were on holiday at the time, and john wanted it done, dusted and released...
"b" side is a George track, i like it also, i had to buy this one as it was a stand alone single and couldnt get it on album for a few years after this..
again, its the Beatles and it reached the customary #1 on the charts...

I agree, Ghosts of Dachau is brilliant and emotive!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:THE STYLE COUNCIL "shout to the top" b/w "ghosts of dachau" 1984

abysmal "a" side here from messers Weller and Talbot...hate the tune, melody and the lyrics but i do like the piano work on offer, but even that cant save this pop-pap from the recycle bin!
"b" side is brilliant, a haunting sparse track written by Weller after he visited the Dachau museum in Poland, his lyrics are so precise as to how it may have felt to be in one of those Nazi concentration camps...everytime i listen to this track it sends chills up my spine and brings back horrific memories of my own visit to Auswich back in the mid 1980s...
single reached #8 here back in the day...
if there is one song you listen to from the ones i post in thread please make it "ghosts of dachau"

George Clinton's Funkadelic!!! luv em...I have an album by them...Free Your Ass and Your Mind Will Follow...very good electro funk!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:FUNKADELIC "one nation under a groove pt.I" b/w "one nation under a groove pt.II" 1978

i discovered this song after i saw Style Council play it live in 1984...liked their version and sought out the original...
i like this, some good funky/soul stuff happening here, shame i havent got it as a full length song without the pause that is caused by flipping the disc over!
single
failed to chart here, but i like it!

SAM BROWN "stop!" b/w "blue soldier" 1988

"blue-eyed, white girl soul" from the UK...
pretty sure she only had this hit and an okay cover of "can i get a witness"...
brilliant ballad from Sam, great voice, just a shame she never prolonged her chart career beyond this...
"b" side isnt bad as far as songs go, but its not a patch on the spectacular "stop"!
single made it to #3 on our chats here

BILLY BRAGG "levi stubbs' tears" b/w "think again!" & "walk away renee(version)" 1986

one of Billy's best songs is on this single release..."think again!", for which i have posted the brilliant lyrics below...
"a" side is typically great storytelling from Bragg...
"think again!"...you judge for yourself, but this is sonething Dylan could have written IMO
the third track is a spoken word song done to the guitar sounds of the old 'walk away renee' song, all up one of Bragg's best singles IMO...
single failed to chart here...

THINK AGAIN! So you think that the Russians want war
These are the children of parents who died in the last one
Do you think that's possible knowing their past
That they'd ever considered repeating the past
When twenty million were slaughtered by NAZI invasion

They died fighting on our side you know
In a fight to defend human kind from NAZI terror and hatred
In the name of humanity bitter and torn
In the name of our children as yet to be born
Before we do that which can never be undone I beg of you
Think, Think again
and again and again and again and again

Do you think that the Russians want war
These are the children of parents who died in the last one
Do you think that they want to go through that again
The destruction the bloodshed the suffering and pain
In the second wolrd war out of every three dead one was Russian
If we try with all of our power
can we not find a way to peacefully settle our difference

In the name of humanity bitter and torn
In the name of our children as yet to be born
Before we do that which can never be undone I beg of you
Think, Think again
and again and again and again and again

Do you think that the Russians want war
Will the voice of insanity lead you to total destruction
Will you stumble to death as though you were blind
Will you cause the destruction of all human kind
Will you die because you don't like their political system

There will be no survivors you know
No one left to scream in the night and condemn our stupidity

In the name of humanity bitterly torn
In the name of our children as yet to be born
Before we do that which can never be undone I beg of you
Think, Think again
and again and again and again and again

JOHN COUGAR-MELLENCAMP "r.o.c.k in the usa" b/w "under the boardwalk" 1986

the "a" side was from the suberb "scarecrow" album, the "b" side is a cover of the old r+b classic...
love the "a"side, almost love the "b" side as surprisingly Mellencamp does do a bloody good version of it!
single made it to #18 here...

PAUL KELLY & THE COLOURED GIRLS "to her door" b/w "bicentenial" 1987

pretty hard to describe Kelly???, sort of alt, folk, rock rolled into one, he is a great wordsmith IMO(almost up there with Dylan at times)..
this"a" side is a ricky number of a marraige breakup, "the "B" side is Kelly's tribute to Australia's 'bicentenial' of Capt.James Cook's landing here..
single reached #14 here, thats about as good as Kelly managed here?!
