Music Head Wrote:#465 - Muddy Waters - Rollin' Stone (Catfish Blues) - 1948

running recap for me - 3's=21, 2's=10, 1's=5
this one - **
from the album: various compilations
Written by McKinley Morganfield (Muddy Waters)
Produced by Leonard and Phil Chess
Chart action: predates charts

the players:
Muddy Waters

You have to appreciate the rawness of recordings this old. Other than for it's influence on rock, I've
never been a big blues fan. Just too repetitious. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate it. Around the time
of it's birth it had to be a breath of fresh air. Rollin' Stone is actually an interpretation of a song
called Catfish Blues which was written in the 1920's. Muddy's song was his first release on Chess records,
where most of his career took place. It sold enough for Muddy to quit his day job as a truck driver, and
become a legend.

Lyrics

Well, I wish I was a catfish,
swimmin in a oh, deep, blue sea
I would have all you good lookin women,
fishin, fishin after me
Sure 'nough, a-after me
Sure 'nough, a-after me
Oh 'nough, oh 'nough, sure 'nough

I went to my baby's house,
and I sit down oh, on her steps.
She said, "Now, come on in now, Muddy
You know, my husband just now left
Sure 'nough, he just now left
Sure 'nough, he just now left"
Sure 'nough, oh well, oh well

Well, my mother told my father,
just before hmmm, I was born,
"I got a boy child's comin,
He's gonna be, he's gonna be a rollin stone,
Sure 'nough, he's a rollin stone
Sure 'nough, he's a rollin stone"
Oh well he's a, oh well he's a, oh well he's a

Well, I feel, yes I feel,
feel that a low down time ain't long
I'm gonna catch the first thing smokin,
back, back down the road I'm goin
Back down the road I'm goin
Back down the road I'm goin
Sure 'nough back, sure 'nough back

Music Head Wrote:#464 - Prince & The Revolution - Kiss - 1986

running recap for me - 3's=21, 2's=11, 1's=5
this one - **
from the album: Parade
Written by Prince & The Revolution
Produced by Prince & The Revolution
Chart action: #1 US, #6 UK, #2 Australia, #4 Canada

the players:
Prince

Prince was the late night clip I posted yesterday and he shows up here today. Twenty five years ago he hit
the chart with this one. Not one of my Prince love tracks but I do like it. Prince was asked for a song by
a group called Mazarati. He gave them this acoustic number. After they developed it he took it back and
added it at the last minute to his Parade album. WB did not want to release it has a single, but Prince
had some clout by this time and insisted. It got him a Grammy for best r&b performance. Screw you label
heads.

Lyrics

You don't have to be beautiful
to turn me on
I just need your body baby
From dusk till dawn
You don't need experience
To turn me out
You just leave it all up to me
I'm gonna show you what it's all about

You don't have to be rich
To be my girl
You don't have to be cool
To rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your
Kiss

You got to not talk dirty, baby
If you wanna impress me
You can't be to flirty, mama
I know how to undress me (Yeah)
I want to be your fantasy
Maybe you could be mine
You just leave it all up to me
We could have a good time

You don't have to be rich
To be my girl
You don't have 2 be cool
To rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your
Kiss

Yes I think I wanna dance
Gotta, Gotta
Little girl Wendy's parade
Gotta, gotta, gotta

Women not girls rule my world
I said they rule my world
Act your age, mama (Not your shoe size)
Not your shoe size
Maybe we could do the twirl
You don't have to watch Dynasty
To have an attitude
You just leave it all up to me
My love will be your food
Yeah

You don't have to be rich
To be my girl
You don't have to be cool
To rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your
Kiss

#463 - Sam And Dave - Soul Man - 1967

running recap for me - 3's=22, 2's=11, 1's=5
this one - ***
from the album: Parade
Written by Isaac Hayes, David Porter
Produced by Isaac Hayes, David Porter
Chart action: #2 US, #24 UK

the players:
Sam & Dave - vocal
Booker T & The MG's
Memphis Horns

Now that's soul music folks. Written by Isaac Hayes which I didn't know. Memphis Horns make it happen. Written after Isaac viewed the afterath of the Detroit riots in 1967. Can't see the connection but that's what the man said. Stax was just making a name for itself, and this was their most successful single to date. Netted a Grammy for Best R&B Performance. After performing the song on SNL, the Blues Brothers also scored a top 20 hit with it in 1979.

Well grab the rope and Ill pull you in
Give you hope and be your only boyfriend

#462 - Nirvana - All Apologies - 1993

running recap for me - 3's=22, 2's=12, 1's=5
this one - **
from the album: In Utero
Written by Kurt Cobain
Produced by Steve Albini
Chart action: #45 US, #32 UK, #41 Canada

the players:
Kurt Cobain – guitar, vocals
Dave Grohl – drums
Krist Novoselic – bass guitar
Kera Schaley – cello

Never as big a fan of these guys as most were. Nevermind, a great album, after that just ok for me,
including this one. Second single, after Heart Shaped Box, from the groups third album. Written for wife
Courtney Love. May have been better in it's acoustic form as released from their MTV Unplugged
performance, this is the original. Grammy nominated for Best Rock Vocal Performance, losing to Aerosmith's
Crazy, and Best Rock Song, losing to Bruce Springsteen's Streets Of Philadelphia.

Lyrics

What else should I be
All apologies
What else should I say
Everyone is gay
What else should I write
I don't have the right
What else should I be
All apologies

In the sun
In the sun I feel as one
In the sun
In the sun
Married
Buried

I wish I was like you
Easily amused
Find my nest of salt
Everything is my fault
I'll take all the blame
Aqua seafoam shame
Sunburn with freezeburn
Choking on the ashes of her enemy

In the sun
In the sun I feel as one
In the sun
In the sun

[x2]
Married
Buried

Yeah, yeah yeah yeah

[x13]
All in all is all we are (All alone is all we are?)

Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 17-11-2012

liking their 'unplugged' album a lot better than their studio albums, grossly overrated IMO, due probably to the fact that Cobain died at their so called 'peak'

IMO, if you want simplistic repeatative rock music with single or two note solo's etc....go hear the masters of of it in Neil Young and Crazy Horse

Looking Back At Some Classics - Quaalude - 17-11-2012

Just about every unplugged album by every artist is absolutely outstanding. So I never really compare those particular recordings to the studio produced albums from that era.

I consider Nirvana's album In Utero their best. Bleach is a good "Raw" sounding recording while Nevermind leans more (safe) toward Pop/Mainstream.

Scentless Apprentice from the album In Utero is a good/best example of the raw (grunge) originality/talent of Kurt Cobain during the 90s Seattle era.

Cobain is one of the few musician/songwriters that developed "Noise", Chaos, Distortion, (original) lyrics and raw power into Art Form. Music written and produced by a simplistic approach. Nothing technical to this particular genre at all.

Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 17-11-2012

All Apologies ....ok not great !
