What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 02-02-2011 CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:yeh, i usually have a rough idea in my head when i pull the album out and sometimes its way off...as you said, both ways LOL you're safe don't have it What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 02-02-2011 with "Mull Of Kintyre", i was always of the impression that Americans didnt like it, thats why "girlschool" was chosen as the "a" side of the single over there, and "kintyre" ignored?? What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 03-02-2011 ![]() ^ This is the sleeve art on my copy, but I believe the original was a pastiche of the Sgt Pepper cover. Zappa here blasts gaping holes in the Peace movement, which is all highly amusing. Standard satirical Zappa fare, but this is much better than most of his that I've heard. Does the soul good to have the occasional top-up of cynicism... Allmusic 5/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 05-02-2011 ![]() JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP "scarecrow" 1985. vinyl/cd #2US, #2Aust, how come this didnt chart in the UK???? JCM, like The Boss, wrote their greatest songs when the influences came straight from the heart, and in this case, the Indiana born and raised farmer's boy felt the plight of US farmers having their properties foreclosed due to crippling interest rate rises in 1984, thus, this album could have so easily have called "trouble in the heartland"(or similar), but i guess "scarecrow" was a more universally acceptable title. it was during this time that Cougar joined forces with Willie Nelson and Neil Young to launch "farm aid" to raise money for struggling farmers and let the world know of their plight, not all the tracks here deal with that issue but at least half of them sum up the situation perfectly. of the 11 tracks here, 6 get*** . 3 get **. and 2 get a solitary star. this is 80s rock 'n' roll at its best without gimmics and theatrics, and is still as important today as "born in the USA'...because what has changed since then? very little im affraid! I LOVE THIS ALBUM worst track: the kind of fella i am best track: justice and independance '85 tracks: 1. rain on the scarecrow*** #21US, #34Aust http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbEk2LuQATQ live intro:grandma's theme 2. small town*** #6US, #80Aust http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CVLVaBECuc video 3. minutes to memories** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk54b_WWYT8 live 4. lonely ol' night*** #6US, #32Aust http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPn8SkXrCyc&feature=related live 5. the face of the nation*** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPXPRtZCvpI audio 6. justice and independance '85*** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ1wxCW72wI audio 7. between a laugh and a tear* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmNj3ZwgBUI audio 8. rumbleseat** #28US, #84Aust http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPQy5-QPZHc video 9. you've got to stand for somethin'** 10.R.O.C.K in the USA*** #2US, #18Aust http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgtmStUrXMQ video 11.the kind of fella i am* 3s=6 2s=3 1s=2 rating 2.3 What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 05-02-2011 from my library (vinyl) ![]() Not too big on this one. Steves second solo album. Hooking up with Dave Stewart got him his first record deal. Later became a member of Gong. Also did some work with Mike Oldfield. Primarily known for his guitar work, and no doubt that is his skill, as shown on most of this album. Short song set of 6 but his guitar work is front and center. Todd Rundgren had production duty and members of Utopia contributed on most tracks. Interesting also that legendary jazz trumpeter Don Cherry does some nice work here. I'm sure the guitarists appreciate this but overall just too new agey for me. The album was the best selling of Steves solo work reaching #10 in the U.K. and #130 in the U.S. Rare that the 2 covers here come out good for me and either would have got the best had they been originals. A fellow would have to be into drugs to enoy this. No wait that didn't work either. What Are You Listening To? - Thraak - 08-02-2011 CH: Only just read your review of Black Country Communion album lol I see where you're coming from, a lot of it does sound very similar to 70s Deep Purple and I had similar thoughts to yourself when I heard it for the first time. It's one of those albums that grows on you over time and while not exactly 100% consistent, it certainly has more good points than negative ones. I just love Glenn Hughes' vocal I guess lol MH: Read your comment about the age thing. Obviously I can't really comment on that aspect cos I ain't there yet  but my overall listening does tend to be a bit retro and revolves around the hard rock/blues rock scene. I have my friends to thank for branching me out into more obscure territories. And ironically heres one of those very tunes I am currently listening to lol ^ Totally in love with Alvin's playing right now. Now 66, he hasn't toured the UK since 2004 but this recent video of him playing live in Budapest last year gives me hope that I will be lucky enough one day to witness his talents live  |
