^^So ... Spirit .... they didn’t have too much success commercially – maybe because they were quite eclectic in style, not to mention the competition that was around at that time – 60’s/70’s. They were a psychedelic, jazz rock, sometimes art rock band, and bit proggy now and then too. Their lead guitarist, Randy California, wrote “Taurus” – the intro to which piece his estate is claiming was appropriated by Jimmy Page for “Stairway to Heaven”. But that's a whole 'nother story and they were so much more than that particular can of worms – a talented bunch of guys who made some very nice albums.

Ed Cassidy – drummer who’d been a founding member of The Rising Sons with Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal, known for his trademark shaven head and black clothing which really stood out at the time, as you can imagine – there was a lot of hair about back then! He was also 20 years older than the rest of ‘em and died in 2012 at the ripe old age of 89.

Randy California – lead guitarist, songwriter, backing vocalist – played with Jimi Hendrix and once stood in for Ritchie Blackmore on a DP tour – that calibre of muso. He came to a tragic end whilst rescuing his son from a rip current. The son’s Trust is engaged in the lawsuit over Taurus.

Jon Locke – keyboardist and composer, raised in a classical music environment – he went on to play with Nazareth – passed away in 2006 – cancer.

Jay Ferguson – lead vocals, percussion and songwriting duty shared with Randy California – went on to form Jo Jo Gunne after Spirit, then went solo and he’s still going strong – ventured into film and TV soundtracks and is the composer of the NCIS theme.

Mark Andes – bassist, he was with Canned Heat briefly before Spirit and he also moved on to Jo Jo Gunne, then Firefall, Heart and Mirabal – and now back to Firefall, I believe. He’s released one solo album.

The band was originally called Spirits Rebellious, after a book by Kahlil Gibran, but that was shortened quite quickly to Spirit, for obvious reasons! Here are some clips from Clear –
