Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 12-11-2012 #466 - Missy Elliott - Get Ur Freak On - 2001 running recap for me - 3's=21, 2's=9, 1's=5 this one - * from the album: Miss E...So Addictive Written by Missy Elliott, Timbaland Produced by Timbaland Chart action: #7 US, #4 UK, #44 Australia the players: Missy Elliott - vocal other people I guess Never heard this one before. Didn't think it could get worse than yesterdays for me, but never say never. Like yesterdays, Timbaland co-writes and produces. Profound lyrics as usual. Based on heavy bhangra elements, a popular music and dance form from the Punjab state of India,[1] the song features a six-note base that is a Punjabi melody played on a tumbi, a stringed Indian instrument. That's all fine I guess, but then the lyrics kick in. That's where a lot of hip-hop loses me. I know, I'm just old and out of touch. I'll take the backlash, and you can have this. Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 13-11-2012 #465 - Muddy Waters - Rollin' Stone (Catfish Blues) - 1948 running recap for me - 3's=21, 2's=10, 1's=5 this one - ** from the album: various compilations Written by McKinley Morganfield (Muddy Waters) Produced by Leonard and Phil Chess Chart action: predates charts the players: Muddy Waters You have to appreciate the rawness of recordings this old. Other than for it's influence on rock, I've never been a big blues fan. Just too repetitious. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate it. Around the time of it's birth it had to be a breath of fresh air. Rollin' Stone is actually an interpretation of a song called Catfish Blues which was written in the 1920's. Muddy's song was his first release on Chess records, where most of his career took place. It sold enough for Muddy to quit his day job as a truck driver, and become a legend. Twenty five years ago he hit the chart with this one. Not one of my Prince love tracks but I do like it. Prince was asked for a song by a group called Mazarati. He gave them this acoustic number. After they developed it he took it back and added it at the last minute to his Parade album. WB did not want to release it has a single, but Prince had some clout by this time and insisted. It got him a Grammy for best r&b performance. Screw you label heads.
