Kenny's second solo album. His best period for me. Four love tracks here push the album to that range. Nothing I
don't like. Lucille takes the best, followed by Laura, Hickory Holler, and the Don Williams classic Lay Down Beside
Me, which Kenny does as well as Don. Decent cover of Green Green Grass Of Home but Tom Jones version remains my
favorite. Most of this is actually country but you can hear the pop leanings coming through. Laura was the first
single, making #19 on the country charts. Didn't know that song was a previous #1 hit for Leon Ashley in 1967. The
big one would come with the follow up of Lucille, a #1 country hit along with #5 overall, and getting Kenny a grammy.
The album reached #1 country and #30 overall. Kenny's fame would continue to grow, but this one kicked it off.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Why Don't We Go Somewhere And Love

Best Track - Lucille

In a bar in Toledo
Across from the depot
On a bar stool she took off her ring
I thought I'd get closer
So I walked on over
I sat down and asked her name
When the drinks finally hit her
She said I'm no quitter
But I finally quit livin' on dreams
I'm hungry for laughter
And here ever after
I'm after whatever the other life brings

In the mirror I saw him
And I closely watched him
I thought how he looked out of place
He came to the woman
Who sat there beside me
He had a strange look on his face
The big hands were calloused
He looked like a mountain
For a minute I thought I was dead
But he started shakin'
His big heart was breakin'
He turned to the woman and said

You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille
With four hungry children
And a crop in the field
I've had some bad times
Lived through some sad times
But this time your hurtin' won't heal
You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille

After he left us
I ordered more whisky
I thought how she'd made him look small
From the lights of the bar room
To a rented hotel room
We walked without talkin' at all
She was a beauty
But when she came to me
She must have thought I'd lost my mind
I could'nt hold her
'Cos the words that he told her
Kept coming back time after time

You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille
With four hungry children
And a crop in the field
I've had some bad times
Lived through some sad times
But this time your hurtin' won't heal
You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille

I lost count. Anyway, the man had a lot of albums. Wavering at times, trying to remake himself into a pop star (it
never worked), this one stays pretty close to country. Signing with a new label (Elektra) may have been the nudge
he needed. Works for me. One more love track would have pushed to the love rating. Three great songs staring with
#1 country, Slow Hand. A pop hit for the Pointer Sisters, and Conways version takes it country. Also a #1 country
with The Clown. Favorite for me is She Only Meant To Use Him for which there is no clip. Nothing I don't at least like,
which is unusual for Conways latter albums. This one went to #5 country and of his 15 remaining albums, it was the
highest ranking. The man held the record for the most #1 country singles at 55, until George Strait broke it.
Conway left us in 1993.

MARTY ROBBINS "gunfighter ballads and trail songs" 1960,cd. #8 US, #19 UK.

for good or for bad, i grew up listening to Marty Robbins...my dad loves his music and so do i, he has a real nice voice and tells good little stories so i grabbed this cd at the shop the other night for $8...hell i cant resist cheap cds and Robbins sealed the deal!
very good album with Marty concentrating on songs about the Wild West days and Cowboys in general.
includes the hits "el paso" and "big iron", the former was a US country/pop #1 hit in 1960, unusual for a song back then that almost touches 4 minutes in length..."el paso" also gained Robbins a Grammy for "best country/western vocal performance" and is his best known song...although "a white sports coat" is my favourite song by Marty "el paso" and "big iron" come pretty close.
interesting to note that "big iron" is a fictional account of the life and death of Billy The Kid..especially when he does a song on here called "billy the kid".
this reissue on cd contains three bonus tracks not on the original 1960 album release, "the hanging tree" which was a stand alone hit of its own, "saddle tramp" and the extended full length version of "el paso" clocking in at a whopping extra 17 seconds...what the hell!, why bother for just 17 seconds!
this album is not your usual country sounding album, robbins doesnt have your traditional country sounding voice and the music here has a lot of Mexican sounds to it.
i was surprised to find allmusic rates this one 4.5/5 (2.7), not sure why though??!

one I'd like to have

What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 24-11-2011

from my library (vinyl)

I've ragged on Willie before for making these albums that are not country. Nothing against the man, just the music.
Even then, I can't blame Willie, he does what he does, and does it well I guess. It sells. This one made #3 on the
country charts, with the title track making #11. Not one country song on this album. That single is a jazz type
number from the 30's, as I think most of this is. Not really bad music, just not what people would expect from a
Willie Nelson album. Not me anyway. Shouldn't be surprised as he had been churning these out for quite a while.
Only other song comment worthy is the duet with Julio Iglasias on As Time Goes By. That one sunk the boat. While
playing this album I'm thinking, if there were no band separation (this is vinyl), it would all fit together nicely
as one song. Enough raggin' on Willie for now. The red headed stranger rides no more.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - As Time Goes By

Best Track - To Each His Own

A rose must remain with the sun and the rain
Or its lovely promise won't come true
To each his own to each his own and my own is you
What good is a song if the words just don't belong
And a dream must be a dream for two
No good alone to each his own and my own is you
If a flame is to grow there must be a glow
To open each door there's a key
I need you I know I can't let you go
Your touch means too much to me
Two lips must insit on two more to be kissed
Or they'll never know what love can do
To each his own I've found my own one and only you
If a flame is to grow
To each his own I've found my own one and only you

What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 24-11-2011

ive never really thought of Willie albums as being country anyway...he always seems to incorporate jazzy overtones into his songs...i just think he is "willie", just as dylan is dylan....
thinking he got lumbered with the 'country' tag because of songs he wrote like "crazy" and the cowboy image he projects...well, thats my take on Willie anyway!
