Attempting to squoze productive waking hours into increments of electricity supply - 7,5 to 9 hours a day without any. What a flippin' joke. A very bad one. Stage 6 loadshedding (there are 8, at which stage we may as well all go back to bed). With the so-called 'provider' already implementing scheduled outages, what do their employees do? Go on strike of course! While they may have legitimate grievances, it's a death knell for many who just can't function like this, and a huge knock in terms of any tenuously remaining confidence in the country as a whole, not to mention seriously inconvenient for people who don't have luxury of access to alternative sources of power, causes damage to appliances, etc., etc. Oh and crime goes through the roof, or the door, in this instance - the entire contents of a substation were stolen during loadshedding the other day. All of it - the whole lot - ripped out. Corruption, stupidity and shortsightedness - the perfect recipe for disaster. It's a damn shame. Will the last person to leave please blow out the candle.
Venting - phew! Sorry guys. Off to charge things before the prince of darkness descends again.

^Quite a nerve - wanting to deconstruct that bridge! We have a railway bridge here that trucks are perpetually getting stuck under. Nobody bothers to read the height restrictions which are plastered all over the place, big and bold. Even if they did, I'm not sure some of the drivers would know the height of their vehicles in any event!!
^^We have been spared loadshedding this evening because the outages have affected our water supply – the pumps being out of action resulting in the reservoirs emptying without refilling sufficiently (jeez - this is not rocket science!) so most of the town has had no water today. There’s the small matter of waste treatment plants in the mix as well – the knock-on effects of this failure are endless and potentially extremely unpleasant! Sure similar issues must be occurring all over the country. Eeeek! On the upside – the bokkies just beat Wales!

How do businesses function with load shedding? Or tourism?

With great difficulty. Some of the bigger businesses have generators, for example, but the smaller outfits are really struggling. Tourism is just starting to come back properly and people are generally understanding, to a point. Very frustrating for the hospitality industry though. Certain retail outlets will close for security reasons and it affects electronic payments, etc. Cellphone signal also not great during these times. Coffee shops and restaurants have a tough time too. People are inventive and creative though - have to be! We live in hope - it's really not a sustainable scenario.

Sounds pretty desperate. They are going to have to sort it out sooner or later or there won't be a country to speak of. 30 years of independence and they cannot manage a utility company. Speaks volumes.
