What Are You Listening To? - Fuzz - 26-08-2016 The Highwaymen - Highwayman What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 28-08-2016 ZAC BROWN BAND "the foundation" cd, 2008 career stats: studio albums..................6 singles...........................19 this album...............#2US Country...#9 US singles: "chicken fried".........#1 US Country...#20 US...#52 CAN "whatever it is"........#2 US Country...#26 US...#72 CAN "toes".....................#1 US Country...#25 US...#60 CAN "highway 20 ride"....#1 US Country...#40 US...#66 CAN "free".....................#1 US Country...#34 US...#59 CAN ZBB's third studio album but first for a mainstream label.... pretty much all country and bluegrass on this one with a bit of alt-country.... their biggest selling album to date, close to 4 million sales in the US alone... singles did pretty good also... "chicken fried" sold five million, "toes" - three million and "highway 20 ride" clocked in a respectable million sales in the US.... one Grammy award for 'best new artist' in '09.... the track "Jolene" is not a cover of the Dolly song, it just shares the same title... I know MH isn't really a fan of this band overall, but I guess I am because I own three or four of their albums now and like them all... not sure why, but the final track on the album is a novelty track ala Dr.Hook style, hated some of their novelty songs (not all of them) and hate this one with a passion also... I LIKE THIS ALBUM worst track: sic' 'em on a chicken best track: Mary tracks: 1...toes ** 2...whatever it is *** 3...where the boat leaves from *** ....violin intro to "free" 4...free ** 5...chicken fried *** 6...mary *** 7...different kind of fine ** 8...highway 20 ride ** 9...its not OK *** 10.jolene * 11.sic' 'em on a chicken * 3s=5 2s=4 1s=2 rating: 2.3 What Are You Listening To? - bob_32_116 - 28-08-2016 Fuzz Wrote:The Highwaymen - HighwaymanGreat song. I find it hard to choose between this version and Jimmy Webb's original. What Are You Listening To? - Lovely Linda - 31-08-2016 I loved Crystal from day one on AI mile: Not a bad cover of Patsy. What Are You Listening To? - Lovely Linda - 31-08-2016 Crystal is underated in my opinion. I like her much better than Carrie but then I guess they could not turn her into a "Barbie Doll" so she got left in the background. Here is another song I like that just came to mind. What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 16-09-2016 Seth Lakemanâs new release, Ballads of the Broken Few. ![]() Not sure if Iâm as enchanted with this as I have been with some of his previous stuff, but the addition of the vocal harmony trio, Wildwood Kin, is interesting. Funny â on first listening, they sounded to me quite reminiscent of CSN (in female form) and on further investigation, it turns out that the albumâs producer is Ethan Johns, who has worked with, amongst others, Crosby Stills & Nash. Heâs still intent on stripping his material right down to the bone and recording in authentic, earthy settings; seems to me that despite those lovely harmonies, thereâs even more raw edge to this album â dirtier, messier guitar and violin ⦠a gritty business and a juxtaposition in places. I remain an admirer of his originality and of the fact that he stays true to his own vision, and will have to have another listen; for now, I found this track most striking ⦠ What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 25-09-2016 Parsonsfield â stumbled over them by chance. Theyâre a five piece alt folk/bluegrass band who are casually at home behind their instruments which they play in a bit of a shambolic, yet strangely effective way! They have catchy sounds, good lyrics and a kind of rowdy enthusiasm that is incredibly infectious. I like what Iâve heard of them so far â thoughtful, thought-through and quirky. I think they take their music seriously but also that theyâve managed to slip the shackles of regular dictates and rules, all of which helps to infuse their stuff with a really uplifting element. What theyâre doing is nice and unorthodox, IMHO, and they seem to be enjoying themselves too which is always a good thing! They recently (09 September) released their second album, Blooming Through The Black, and this is from that â âBarbed Wireâ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duGg3W4lL6U From Poor Old Shine â âThe Hurry All Aroundâ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdysgyH4r5I They do a rollicking cover of âLet the Mermaids Flirt with Meâ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSSeDlGDhSc I first listened to this wonderfully whacky and well-written song with great lyrics which is from Poor Old Shine (which, if Iâm correct also used to be their band name before they changed it â all a bit confusing â¦). Anyway - I found âWeeds or Wild Flowersâ a satisfying change from my usual fare, so listened to both albums. Itâll be interesting to see where they go with all of this ⦠ What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 01-10-2016 STURGILL SIMPSON "high top mountain" cd, 2012 career stats: studio albums.................3 singles...........................6 this album......................#31 US Country singles: "life aint fair and the world is mean".........no chart action debut set from Sturgill... album title comes from the name of the cemetery where his relatives are buried... I guess the album cover looking like stained glass windows has that religious overtone also.... fantastic collection of bluegrass and real country on this album... I have all three of his albums, love the first two, the latest has yet to be posted on MD, but I love that one also... two covers on here, Poor Rambler, was written and first sung by one of the original bluegrass guys from way back when in Ralph Stanley, and the other, I'd Have To Be Crazy, was a hit for Lyle Lovett early in his career... haven't heard either original, so I cannot compare, but I love both of Sturgill's versions... seriously, this guy should be way more popular than he is, but I guess "real country" plays second fiddle to the modern crossover sounds nowadays which is a damn shame, that said though, the track I picked as favourite is almost modern country so what do I know!, added bonus with the link is that he plays my favourite and another one I love from this album...its what I call a "two-for-one offer"! I LOVE THIS ALBUM worst track: time after all best track: you can have the crown tracks: 1...life aint fair and the world is mean *** 2...railroad of sin *** 3...water in a well ** 4...sitting here without you *** 5...the storm ** 6...you can have the crown *** 7...time after all ** 8...hero ** 9...some days *** 10.Old King Coal ** 11.por rambler *** 12.i'd have to be crazy *** 3s=6 2s=6 1s=0 rating: 2.5 |
