What Are You Reading ? - Tiggi - 28-09-2009

I've only recently got into The Wire (HBO TV series), and this is a true account by one of the series writers of 12 months spent with the Baltimore police, which serves as the basis for the fictional series.

I just finished my one & only lifetime reading of the King James version of The Bible, and thought I needed a little continuity...

So 'Homocide' is relatively light reading after the bible then - I am impressed/dumbfounded by anyone reading the bible the whole way through - why would you?

To try and make some sense of it.

I'm on my third reading.

Re-reading "The Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn" trilogy by a dude named Tad Williams.

Fantasy brilliance.

One of those challenges that need doing once in a lifetime, surely...

Being pretty much an atheist, I've always wanted to see if the Big Book would have any impact on my views. It didn't.

Also felt that as a work of philosophy, I might learn something from it. Don't think I have.

And Homicide is definitely light reading after about 16 months of wholesale smighting...

As an afterthought, Catrina, is it a ridiculous generalisation to have a view that you Oirish/Ulsterlanders/Paddies are heavily indoctrinated with this stuff ??

No, actually- I'm Catholic (just 'cos I don't believe in god doesn't get me out of that) so we don't bother with the bible much - or at least just keep it New Testament which is pretty fluffy stuff.

But yeah bible = boring and hugely unenlightening

- also I keep meaning to watch the Wire I'm told it's really good but I never have.

@ Music Head - after a while isn't it pretty obvious that it just doesn't make sense? I would have thought that there might be some stuff that would be food for thought but trying to make sense of the whole thing seems like a pointless pursuit - but then God loves a trier or so I'm told!
