Another of my end of year purchases. Bought this after seeing them on one of the late-nights. Thought the performance was superb, even captivating. Included that clip in track 6. Another of those superb performances in the clip of track 1. Some real nice chemistry in this band on stage I think. Not my normal buying habit, to buy after only hearing 1 track, but at times I step out. The entire album doesn't live up to that performance, but still a couple of other great tracks on here. Then there's 3 tracks that bombed for me. Which leaves us with a nice round 2.0 on the Hickster scale. That score is gonna grow fast. This is the groups debut full length album, and there's some nice potential there for me. Album came out in 2009, and just made it my ears. Always stuff to find. The album made it to #76 here in the states and a #86 in Australia. Side note: Edward Sharpe is a fictional character created by band founder Alex Ebert. I don't know. Not sure what the guy was on. Check out the clip for track #2 from a radio station appearance. That's charisma, folks, like the song or not. One other thing on the clip for track #6. If them guys ain't married, they should be after that. Whew!

Alabama, Arkansas, I do love my Ma & Pa
Not the way that I do love you
Holy roly, me, oh my, you’re the apple of my eye
Girl, I’ve never loved one like you
Man, oh man, you’re my best friend, I scream it to the nothingness
There ain’t nothin’ that I need
Well, hot & heavy, pumpkin pie, chocolate candy, Jesus Christ
There ain’t nothin’ please me more than you
Chorus:
Ahh, Home
Let me come Home
Home is wherever I’m with you
(2x)
La la la la, take me Home
Baby, I’m coming Home
I’ll follow you into the park, through the jungle, through the dark
Girl, I’ve never loved one like you
Moats & boats & waterfalls, alley ways & pay phone calls
I’ve been everywhere with you
That’s true
We laugh until we think we’ll die, barefoot on a summer night
Nothin’ new is sweeter than with you
And in the sticks we’re running free like it’s only you and me
Geez, you’re something to see.
Chorus
“Jade?”
“Alexander?”
“Do you remember that day you fell out of my window?”
“I sure do, you came jumping out after me.”
“Well, you fell on the concrete and nearly broke your ass and you were bleeding all over the place and I rushed you off to the hospital. Do you remember that?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Well, there’s something I never told you about that night.”
“What didn’t you tell me?”
“While you were sitting in the backseat smoking a cigarette you thought was going to be your last, I was falling deep, deeply in love with you and I never told you ‘til just now.”
“Now I know.”
Ahh, Home
Let me come Home
Home is whenever I’m with you
Ahh, Home
Let me come Home
Home is when I’m alone with you
Home
Let me come Home
Home is wherever I’m with you
Ahh, Home
Yes, I am Home
Home is when I’m alone with you.
Alabama, Arkansas, I do love my Ma & Pa
Moats & boats & waterfalls & pay phone calls
Ahh, Home
Let me come Home
Home is wherever I’m with you
Ahh, Home

Been listening to this debut solo album 'An Open Letter To The Scene' from Walter Schreifels who is the former frontman of post-hardcore bands Quicksand and Rival Schools, the latter of which are brilliant (check out an album called 'United By Fate').

Much different pop/folk/light rock style to his previous material in aforementioned bands and should fit in nicely alongside the previous Grant Lee Buffalo material.

really liking this one MS
thanks for that

BIC RUNGA "drive" 1998, cd. #45 AU.

Bic was 19 when she released this, her debut album back in 1998, after being discovered by Neil Finn, who incidently plays some guitar on this album.
Bic is part chinese and part Maori(indigineous new zealander).
its so hard to describe this album other than the music is acoustic and sparse which leaves room for Ms.Runga to showcase her amazing vocals, the lyrics and tone of the vocals are a bit edgy and this how i would expect Bjork to sound if she just sung these songs.
"sway" was a big hit here in Australia and also in NZ but failed to chart anywhere else, even though it was used in the soundtrack of the movie "american pie". this album does sound atmospheric and tranquil when listened to with headphones on, a glass of good red wine and the lights dimmed way down.
if anyone can describe this music better than me, feel free to do so as i am lost for a description!

This sixth Cohen album will be the first I can say I don't love. Just misses though. Still some great songs with that mare thing working the best for me which was covered brilliantly by Emmylou Harris. Also includes the first Cohen song I just plain do not like, The Lost Canadian. It's in Canadian and I don't speak it. Don't think I would like it even if it was in American. At least it wasn't a Cohen composition. The album is quite a changeup from the Spector produced last album. This one is back to the softer sound with a lot of different influences in the music. Most notable for me is a gypsy sound, whatever that is. That sound is highlighted by Armenian violinist Raffi Hakopian who appears on most tracks and is featured in some of these live clips. New producer Henry Lewy on board. I've noticed Cohen has never used the same producer thus far. Of course the album never charted and I would guess is near the bottom in his overall sales rankings.

Worst Track - The Lost Canadian

Best Track - Ballad Of The Absent Mare

Say a prayer for the cowboy
His mare's run away
And he'll walk til he finds her
His darling, his stray
but the river's in flood
and the roads are awash
and the bridges break up
in the panic of loss.
And there's nothing to follow
There's nowhere to go
She's gone like the summer
gone like the snow
And the crickets are breaking
his heart with their song
as the day caves in
and the night is all wrong

Did he dream, was it she
who went galloping past
and bent down the fern
broke open the grass
and printed the mud with
the iron and the gold
that he nailed to her feet
when he was the lord

And although she goes grazing
a minute away
he tracks her all night
he tracks her all day
Oh blind to her presence
except to compare
his injury here
with her punishment there

Then at home on a branch
in the highest tree
a songbird sings out
so suddenly
Ah the sun is warm
and the soft winds ride
on the willow trees
by the river side

Oh the world is sweet
the world is wide
and she's there where
the light and the darkness divide
and the steam's coming off her
she's huge and she's shy
and she steps on the moon
when she paws at the sky

And she comes to his hand
but she's not really tame
She longs to be lost
he longs for the same
and she'll bolt and she'll plunge
through the first open pass
to roll and to feed
in the sweet mountain grass

Or she'll make a break
for the high plateau
where there's nothing above
and there's nothing below
and it's time for the burden
it's time for the whip
Will she walk through the flame
Can he shoot from the hip

So he binds himself
to the galloping mare
and she binds herself
to the rider there
and there is no space
but there's left and right
and there is no time
but there's day and night

And he leans on her neck
and he whispers low
"Whither thou goest
I will go"
And they turn as one
and they head for the plain
No need for the whip
Ah, no need for the rein

Now the clasp of this union
who fastens it tight?
Who snaps it asunder
the very next night
Some say the rider
Some say the mare
Or that love's like the smoke
beyond all repair

But my darling says
"Leonard, just let it go by
That old silhouette
on the great western sky"
So I pick out a tune
and they move right along
and they're gone like the smoke
and they're gone like this song
