What Are You Listening To? - jazzboCR - 20-10-2014 SteveO Wrote:What a glorious happy way to start the week!!!! The prime thing about Latin music whether complex jazz pieces or simpler pop things is it's never lost its way as music of the people--they are all built on dance rhythms. R&R and a lot of Black musics long ago lost their way in this regard and we are the lesser for it. Here's a terrif outfit from Austin TX that for 35 years and a few albums has been spreading its version of infectious enthusiasm: Beto and the Fairlanes. Local treasures like this are what make "music cities" such a joy--no pretensions, only area tours, but hear them once and you are a fan forever. http://www.betoandthefairlanes.com/index.html They are not just Latin--they put soul/jazz, Latin, funk, world rhythms into mixer then carefully but loosely blend it to perfection.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Sr0wWCwp8w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rb4oBn5C4no << R.I.P. AWH http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armadillo_World_Headquarters << check the acts playing there and the live recordings made during its 10-year tenure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsuaRzaOPDs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0IUyQm8M2U << such a nice piece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=745BBBN0hk8 They do a killer take on Beethoven's 5th ('94s Salsafied and the disc that got me intrigued)--unfortunately, no YT posting--somebody wanna help out? What Are You Listening To? - MAG2NYC - 20-10-2014 Holy moly, you all have posted some fantastic music! I had to go pull out my Etta James cds and give them a listen this morning (it felt wrong, though...Etta James is a "late Friday night into the Saturday dawn or a lazy Sunday afternoon" kind of music, not a Monday morning kind of jazz...). However, the Latin jazz was just the pick-me-up I needed to put the get-up-and-go in my morning routine! I've been listening to the new album by The Rippingtons this past week, and find it extraordinarily interesting. There are parts of this album that remind me of some of the smoother progressive metal tunes I love. This one is my current favorite -- What Are You Listening To? - geeeaidan - 22-10-2014 Can't stop listening to Radio Riddler.. ONE OF THE JAZZ RECORDS--One of about 5 discs I'd give someone who sincerely wants to know,"What's jazz all about?". What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 03-11-2014 Recording History studio albums - 15 compilation albums - 7 singles - 48 Grammy Awards - Everybody's Talkin' in 1970 and Without You in 1973 from my library (cd) ![]() Producer: various Nothing I don't like on this compilation. Never was big on Harry's studio albums though. Never knew if the guy was trying to be a comedian on a lot of that filler. Best album was Nilsson Schmilsson which was 1 of only 2 gold albums the man had and the only one to hit the top 10. The Grammy for Without You made his career. When Harry belts that chorus with full orchestra, that's all I need. Interesting that Harry's fame didn't happen until both John and Paul said he was one of their favorite artists. This happened at a press briefing to announce the formation of Apple Records. John said he listened to Harry's debut album for 36 hours straight. I'm thinking he wasn't really straight. John even produced and was on Harry's Pussy Cats album in 1974. They became bff's. Harry died in 1994 from a heart attack at the age of 53.
