Reginald Kenneth Dwight, or Sir Elton John was born this day in 1947. He took his stage name from Bluesology bandmates, Long John Baldry and Elton Dean. I could pick dozens of Elton John songs to link, there are so many great choices, but the story that’s always stayed with me is that if it weren’t for LJB there’s a chance Elton John might not have been around today; so going slightly sideways - from Long John Baldry’s fantastic album, It Ain’t Easy (which was produced by Elton John and Rod Stewart – Ronnie Wood was also involved, for interest), “Rock Me When He’s Gone”, an Elton John and Bernie Taupin composition with the king of keys strutting his stuff. Happy Birthday Reggie!

James Iha, born this day in 1968 in Chicago, Illinois – co-founder and guitarist of Smashing Pumpkins fame. He now writes, sings, produces, arranges, still plays guitar, has got into a bit of electronica and is generally involved in a range of collaborative activities around the music biz. He has something of an air of Andy Warhol about him, or maybe that should be ‘hair’! An interesting, arty character - edgy. He has, in a most respectable discography, two solo albums to his credit – this track is from Look to the Sky. It’s not really my usual fare, but I listened to the album anyway, and I do quite like the sounds, and the way he’s layered this all up into a gentle crescendo …

Stacey Kent – born on this day in 1968. She’s a jazz singer with a very sweet sound and plenty of accolades, especially from the French. I’d put her in the same category as Diana Krall, Madeleine Peyroux and Melody Gardot - as a frame of reference. She makes records with her husband, Jim Tomlinson who is a tenor saxophonist and interestingly, she has input on a couple of her albums from author, Kazuo Ishiguro, who has co-written some of her songs including award winning “The Ice Hotel”.

From Breakfast on the Morning Tram, I think this is a great cover of ‘Landslide’ (Stevie Nicks) –

John Evan(s), born 28 March 1948. Jethro Tull’s keyboard player between 1970 and 1980 – he was responsible for the piano intro to Locomotive Breath, which apparently was devised in studio while the others were out to lunch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCcwNoVSt2E).

From jethrotull.com (it’s an interesting site – how could it not be?!) – “John emigrated to Australia many years ago and now lives mostly in Melbourne where he sings in local choirs and still enjoys music although no longer as a piano player, having suffered hand damage as a result of long-distance bicycle touring and rallies throughout the world in his middle years.”

During his time with JT, he became recognisable by his stage attire of a white ‘ice-cream suit’, as much as for his flamboyant playing (unlike Martin Barré, who in this clip, appears to have nicked the hotel curtains for his own outfit!! Lol!) Worth the watch/listen for sheer entertainment value, quite aside from anything else.
