What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 24-01-2011 from my library (vinyl) Her fourth album and the last on Apple. Maybe they figured it out. Says this is the first album where she took complete control. I don't believe it, but whatever. The album is dedicated to "the sisters who died in pain and sorrow for being unable to survive in a male society." Guess we see where this is going. I believe she and John were seperated during this period. Anything that made a like rating here, was either because of the lyrics or the music, never the singing. One exception may be that last song on the album, in which she sounds rather seductive. Uh oh, was that chauvanistic? Oh well, no more so than the song itself, in the reverse, I suppose. The album never touched the charts. Included a bonus clip here which I stumbled across. A live performance by John & Yoko on the Dick Cavett show performing Woman Is The Nigger Of The World. Check out Yoko's performance, amazing talent. This is off of the 1972 Sometime In New York City album which I do not own but wish I did. I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM Worst Track - If Only Best Track - Men Men Men A one, two, three. J.o.h.n.n.y., God's little gift, cream and pie. Men, men, men, umm, uum, Men, men, men, umm, uum, Men, men, milk and honey, God's little gift for woman. I want you clever but not too clever, I want you bad but not too bad. I want you strong but not too strong, I want you to try your rightful position. Oh, too, too much, I mean, it's so good. Men, men, snails and puppies, Your muscles are not for fighting in war. Your lips are not for voicing opinions, Your eyes are there for us to look into. I want you to take your rightful position. Oh, too, too much, I mean, it's so good. Men, men, grapes and nuts, Your pants are never tight enough, Your boots are never long enough. Your skin is never young enough, I want you to hold your rightful position. Pardon me, honeycum, your hair piece's slipping. Men, men, apples and figs, I like you to be faithful but not very fussy, I like you to be behind me but not just beside me. I like you to shut up but know when to say yes, I want you to learn your frightful position. Pardon me, starstud, your cod piece's showing. Now you know what you have to do-oh, Now you know what's expected of you-hoo-hoo-hoo. So come, come, come, come, Come up and hum hum, Come up and hum hum, Come up and see me sometime, Come up and see me sometime. -ladies and gents, I'd like to introduce you to my lower half, without whom I won't be breathing so heavily. Honey juice, you can come out of the box now... -yes, dear. 1) Growing Pain - ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8MsnKAd75I 2) Yellow Girl (Stand By For Life) - * audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Abrlx2z7l5Q 3) Coffin Car - * 4) Woman Of Salem - ** 5) Run Run Run - ** 6) If Only - * audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ20UVvHpSI 7) A Thousand Times Yes - * 8) Straight Talk - * audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jgbl-N04Dc 9) Angry Young Woman - ** 10) She Hits Back - * 11) Woman Power - ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV8ohWIPZbw 12) Men Men Men - ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gcWP6cYyLA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5lMxWWK218 3's - 0 2's - 6 1's - 6 Grade - 1.5 What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 24-01-2011 tongue planted firmly in cheek MH??? yoko is an amazing talent, she is in tune to everything but the song LOL....when i discover exactly what she is talented at i'll be sure to post it here What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 26-01-2011 from my library (cd) Another of my new year purchases. Won't take much to push this into the love area. Their third album and first for me, although I did hear the last one. Washington state band formed in 2004. Been touring in support of this by opening for Pearl Jam. Not much like them in my opinion. Love Ben Bridwells vocals. He hands those off on a couple of tracks which are not as good. Nothing bad here though. A blend of a lot of styles fit together nicely. The album has been their most succesful commercialy, reaching #7 in the states, #21 in the U.K. and #19 in Australia, and has received a grammy nomination for best alternative album. I LIKE THIS ALBUM Worst Track - Dilly Best Track - Factory The elevator, in the hotel lobby has a lazy door The man inside is going to a hotel room He jumped out right after seeing just the very sight of me Decided he better hike it to the second floor It's temporary, this place I'm in I permanently won't do this again My belongings scattered all across the hotel floor Now and later, I was thinking it over by the snack machine I thought about you and a candy bar The Now and Laters, now that I've got, stuck between my teeth I fell asleep to the greatest movie of the year A man gets lonely, for heavens sake He's wondering only what did you do today The world's spinning 'round to an old, sad song Well it's coming down outside like I never even seen before I fell into some kind of sorry state But looking back now, I think it's finally time for me to laugh about it And get my things together and find something to say Well I feel awful, and I believe That time gets wasted in this misery And darling, I don't ever wanna come back home 1) Factory - *** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0C_eP1ZXx0 2) Compliments - ** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rca5nyuENLY 3) Laredo - ** video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH8QICzCO8g&ob=av2el 4) Blue Beard - ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qae9_7jvMxE 5) On My Way Back Home - *** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmVlHNDk_hM 6) Infinite Arms - *** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5bwN_cbEms 7) Dilly - ** video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpRtY4aHReQ&ob=av2el 8) Evening Kitchen - *** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik3G_q_6RtU 9) Older - ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xLatHZlwQU 10) For Annabelle - ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vVRBOUnGPo 11) NW Apt - ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Iwo8UZ48dI 12) Neighbor - ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_C3ztUjCeGU 3's - 4 2's - 8 1's - 0 Grade - 2.3 What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 26-01-2011 thanks again for the "aussie" chart position MH....and i agree "infinate arms" is a very good album, i have nothing else of theirs to compare it to though. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 26-01-2011 ![]() Another from the gentler end of the Cave spectrum, from 1990. As usual, brilliantly written Noirish songs, flawlessly delivered. This guy is someone I've yet to catch live, and I'll be disappointed if I don't manage it at some stage. Allmusic 4/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 26-01-2011 i dont have this album yet,but i believe it you are correct in it being good. if and when you get the chance to see him live, take the opportunity to do so, u wont be dissapointed, i guarentee it, i have seen NC twice and am going to see Grinderman in a few weeks at one of our summer festivals. What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 27-01-2011 ![]() ICEHOUSE "primitive man" 1982. vinyl #3Aust, #64UK, #129US im too hot in this 40C heat to be bothered, but here i go anyway! Icehouse were originally called "the flowers" for their first album and first four singles, however when their Australian record company took them to the internationally market there was already a band known in several countries by that name, thus the name change to "icehouse". this was the first of four reasonably good albums by Iva Davies and Co under the name Icehouse. this album was retitled "love in motion" in the UK, and both UK and US had slight variations to this track listing, the cd does contain all variations and contains seventeen tracks in all, which includes b-sides and remixes. Iva Davies vocals bear more than a passing resemblance to Bryan Ferry and David Bowie and some of the musical content has shades of The Cars. the tracks themselves, for the most part, have a smooth quality to those of Roxy Music's recordings like Avalon. overall, its a pleasant album to listen to, nothing too bad about it or great either...just pleasant. I LIKE THIS ALBUM worst track: one by one best track: hey little girl tracks: 1. great southern land** #5Aust, #83UK http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzMuPzvLn0o live 2. uniform** #83UK 3. street cafe** #57Aust, #62UK http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4j5YwGS8AH8 live 4. hey little girl** #7Aust, #17UK, #31US http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UkmSkT2sRg&feature=related live & interview 5. glam* 6. trojan blue** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sw9RLSKp0h4 audio 7. one by one* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjJLQoPl5zs&feature=related live 8. break these chains** 9. mysterious thing** 10.goodnight mr.matthews** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apK3aFYWZyY audio 3s=0 2s=8 1s=2 rating: 1.8 What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 27-01-2011 ^^ hadn't heard before nice call on the comparisons What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 27-01-2011 Music Head Wrote:^^ thanks MH, appreciated! Man OF Colours is their best album, i lent it to a friend many years ago and never got it back,DOH! What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 27-01-2011 ![]() Originally recommended to me by Debbie at work, who's now been gone for some months. Music Head mentioned this ages ago also. The price finally dropped on Amazon, so... High quality mid-Atlantic Alt-Folk. This has a confidence about it which is pretty intoxicating. Most of the band sing, so it's not yet possible to pick which one's which, but at least one of them has a great voice, and there are some fine harmonies on display. Allmusic didn't much like this, which proves even my trusted bible-site is sometimes fallible. Allmusic 3/5 stars. |
