What a beautiful voice. What an ugly head, but it does make me want to rub it, just like I do my grandsons after he gets a haircut. Debut album from shinehead. Like most, I probably didn't purchase this until after the hugely popular follow up. This didn't live up to that for me, but it does contain a couple of great tracks in Mandinka and Troy. She would never match the success of that follow up and this is her second best selling album. Didn't know until now that the U.S. cover for this album was different from the European. The above one is the U.S. The European is close to the same except that her mouth is wide open as if screaming. You can see that cover on track #5. Interesting that that was changed. The album would reach #27 in the U.K. and #36 in the U,S. with the singles of Mandinka and I Want Your (Hands On Me) only finding play on the Dance Club charts, although Mandinka did hit #17 in the U.K. and #39 in the land of Crazy Horse.

For some reason, I've never got round to buying this. Until now.
There are a handful of producers that I look out for, and would consider buying albums produced by them where I wouldn't normally. Only found out recently that this was produced by Steve Albini, so it became a must-have.
It's more of a raw proposition than Nevermind which suits the band well. I guess many members will know this well, so I won't dwell on its' merits, but it does contain a song with one of the great cynical titles; Radio Friendly Unit Shifter.

The first listen of my recent purchases. Although a decent rating after my customary 5 spins, I expected higher. As usual, CH and I are pretty much in agreement. There is still room to grow, and I'm sure it will. I've seen this band a couple of times on the late nights, and I think they are one of those that are much better live. Plenty of live clips here to demonstrate that. The downside, on record anyway, might come down to the montone droning vocals of Matt Berninger, which can be very hard to follow. On most tracks the music sweeps me away though. Rounded out with two sets of brothers, this is the New York bands fifth album of which I own one other (Boxer). That would make it a 5 member band, but the sound is much fuller with the usual accompaniment of strings and horns. Actually formed in Ohio in 1999, the band made the move to the big apple to find their audience. The album is the bands most successful so far, debuting at #3 in the states and #5 in the U.K. It is still riding high after it's May release. Initial single of Bloodbuzz Ohio is what hooked me.
