RE: Born on this day ... - Ruby - 26-07-2017

Sharing a birthday with CH is Sir Michael Philip Jagger, aka Mick. He was born in 1943, in Dartford, Kent, England.

There seems to be some debate, especially amongst his bandmates (the immortal one, at any rate) as to whether or not he should have:
a) got a knighthood in the first place, and what it was for, exactly … and
b) whether or not he should have accepted it, him being an anti-establishment icon and all.

According to wiki, the mere ‘Mr’ Richards said that he did not want to take to the stage with someone wearing a "coronet and sporting the old ermine. It's not what the Stones is about, is it?" Charlie Watts on the other hand thought it was a hoot that such an accolade should be handed to someone with “18 wives and 20 children” (only a slight exaggeration), and who, had it been anyone else, would probably have been lynched rather than fêted! In an amusing twist on titles, Her Majesty declined the request to bestow the honour in person and left it up to Charles to take care of the formalities.

Fun fact: Mick’s great granddaughter who was born in 2014, is two years older than his youngest son. Will someone please work that one out??! The man’s a reprobate – and an awfully cheerful one at that.

The Rolling Stones have gone through a couple of incarnations and transformations, but always with Mick leading the way, with the blues as his/their most constant basis, no matter what actually came forth from time to time, constantly reinventing themselves and never without a whole lot of internal squabbling – just like an unruly family of feral creatures. They have really run the gamut of the hedonistic rock star lifestyle, challenged every ‘norm’ on the planet, made an indelible mark on the 20th century and sold literally gazillions of records. Sir Mick has, in his personal capacity, released a healthy number of solo albums and dabbled in production as well as having been involved in movies, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

I was never a big Rolling Stones fan, aside from being briefly and temporarily distracted by all that outrageous swagger, but there are one or two things they did that I could like, and I generally prefer the ballads, blues and funk …

“Wild Horses” … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFLJFl7ws_0

“Angie”, of course … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcZn2-bGXqQ

“Waiting on a Friend” … lol – such a motley lot – and the music is gooood IMHO … Sonny Rollins on sax, no less -

Have to agree about Angie and Wild Horses. My favourite tracks of theirs, and of course, Ruby Tuesday!

by far their best two tracks IMO also....
but I do love the other one Ruby mentioned....Waiting On A Friend.

not really a huge fan of them as an albums band, I think theres a lot of filler on their albums,
the exceptions for me are Tattoo You and Emotional Rescue

^^Great minds, etc., Smile

Simon Kirke was born on this day in 1949, in London, England. He was Free’s drummer, and when that fell apart, went on to join Bad Company – he’s been with them ever since (when they get together, that is, which is sporadically). I can’t imagine that anyone who knows anything at all about popular music would not be familiar with “All Right Now” and “Can’t Get Enough”, “Feel Like Makin’ Love”, and so on.

Nowadays, Kirke lives in Manhattan and is a governor on the board of the Grammy Awards committee. He also sits on the board of Road to Recovery, an organisation which assists teenagers in overcoming addiction. He’s made three solo albums, the most recent of which was released in May this year -  All Because of You. This album clearly indicates his chosen life path and spiritual stance, I’d say, although he's not at all preachy and it doesn’t change the essence of his work, IMHO; if anything, might enhance it.

Despite the fact that they are poles apart, something in his delivery reminds me so much of Greg Lake, especially on this track - “Maria” – he has a good voice ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zye_RiJ2wJw

And this is his ukulele version of “Feel Like Makin’ Love” … yip, that’s what I said - ukulele! Stay with it -

A brilliantly simple drummer. The now-famous debut album has some of the most steady rock drumming around and the kit is recorded really well. Always been a fave of mine.

^Yes – classic album! Must get a new copy - the only surviving one I have is on vinyl which is fine, just not always convenient.
Incidentally, it would have been Boz Burrell’s birthday today. He died in 2006 - RIP.

Robert William Cray was born on this day in 1953, in Colombus, Georgia, USA. He’s a blues/soul man and during his career has rubbed musical shoulders with John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan (briefly, at Clapton's show, the same night SRV died in the helicopter crash), B.B. King, Jimmie Vaughan and Buddy Guy (who had a birthday on 30 July – he turned 81).

Cray’s musical ambition was fuelled as a teenager as a result of listening to the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, Bobby Bland, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles, and further influenced by blues musicians such as Otis Rush, Albert King, and particularly Albert Collins. Buddy Guy also featured quite heavily at the time, as might be expected! He and his band made a name for themselves on the road, opening for bigger acts and so on, and the result has been 23 albums (incl. live), 5 Grammy Awards and a couple of signature Stratocasters.

The lead track from Bad Influence, the album that made everyone sit up and take notice … “Phone Booth” … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMdGqfrT7Ro

From Strong Persuader, “Smokin’ Gun” … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gQEDwjhaDE

The lead track from Take Your Shoes Off, but this version is from 4 Nights Of 40 Years Livehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZfWtqiqJXs

And … he and his band released a new album in May this year, Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm. From the first 10 seconds in, you just know it will be great listening … love it when that happens! Yet again … the lead track (since I can’t find the one I’d choose as my favourite) …

RE: Born on this day ... - Ruby - 05-08-2017

Was listening to Tim Weisberg’s Hurtwood Edge - or just over half of it and simply couldn’t get all the way through that particular vinyl freebie! Just found the flute too screechy and irritating and gave up. Give me a heavy metal instrument any day, lol! On the other hand, the Fogelberg collaboration, Twin Sons of Different Mothers, is very nice indeed, so, turned to that instead! Phew …

This is an original Hollies number and the bassist really stood out on this one, IMHO – turns out it’s Willie Weeks and coincidentally, it’s his birthday today!

Willie Weeks was born on this day in 1947, in Salemburg, North Carolina and the list of artists he has not played session for is probably shorter than that of those he has. OMG what a mouthful. Anyway – he’s been going for an awfully long time and is obviously in great demand … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willie_Weeks.

Back to that track then – probably not the best showcase, but it made me notice his playing …

RE: Born on this day ... - Jerome - 06-08-2017

Fantastic album - had this on vinyl many moons ago.

RE: Born on this day ... - Ruby - 06-08-2017

^Yes it is.

Ton Scherpenzeel was born on this day in 1952, in Hilversum, Netherlands. He co-founded Dutch prog rock group Kayak with Pim Koopman (who died in 2009). They disbanded between 1982 and 2000, during which hiatus he contributed to three Camel studio albums, and one live album, and he might have done more with them but for his fear of flying which, of course, limited his touring capacity; from what I can see though, he did join them on their most recent Snow Goose outing. He’s also worked with Earth and Fire and Ayeron, and has released four solo albums. He remains Kayak’s leading light and is the only member of the band to appear on every one of their releases. He’s a keyboardist, composer, producer and backing vocalist.

I don’t have any Kayak or Ton Scherpenzeel albums, but Kayak’s Close to the Fire is going on the wishlist for a start. Gotta have at least one palindrome in the collection! Lol! Seriously – from the excerpts I’ve had time to listen to, it sounds fantastic …

“Frozen Flame” … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JretuszrJAc

The very Celtic sounding “Full Circle” with one Andrew Latimer making a guest appearance … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP6SpB961lo

… and “Here Today” …

RE: Born on this day ... - Jerome - 07-08-2017

Great keyboard player. He and Andy Latimer work really well together.
