WILLIE NELSON "songbird" cd, 2006

career stats:
studio albums.............68
singles......................185

this album stats.....................#19 US Country...#87 US

predominantly a covers album here with four Nelson originals including two re-recordings of old songs....
now, if someone asked me to pick two songs Willie should not cover i'd automatically say Cohen's "hallelujah" and "amazing grace"....
then low and behold, he slips those two in on here....and im correct, he should not have covered them...
even the best track here is one called "sad songs and waltzes"....that's a cover of one he recorded decades ago....says a lot about this album for me!
the thing with Willie for is, most of his average songs get by purely for his vocals...that Texan drawl..i love it!
album was produced by Ryan Adams and was recorded in New York instead of Texas or Nashville, so I guess Willie put himself out of his comfort zone
for this one, and it does show, sounds in places like his heart just isn't in it.....
there are no links for this album and im not posting the original 1973 version of my favourite track because that's not the one on the album....
but that said......

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: "hallelujah"/"amazing grace"
best track: sad songs and waltzes

tracks:

1...rainy day blues **
2...songbird **
3..blue hotel *
4...back to earth **

6...hallelujah! *
7...$1000 wedding **
8...we don't run **
9...yours love **

I would not call it modern country. They are outlaw country Ed. At least to a fellow outlaw, they are to me

KACEY MUSGRAVES "same trailer different park" cd, 2013

career stats:
studio albums..............2
singles........................7

this album...........................#1 US Country.....#2 US...#77 AU...#13 CAN...#39 UK
singles:
"merry go round"................#14 US Country...#63 US................#26 CAN
"blowin' smoke"..................#31 US Country..#107 US...............#46 CAN
"follow your arrow".............#10 US Country...#60 US................#42 CAN
"keep it to yourself"............#40 US Country...#32 US................#48 CAN

finally, a so-called modern singer from the US who is the 'real deal', and in real deal, I mean 'real country'!
this is Kacey's debut album on a major label but she released five others as an independent artist over the previous thirteen years....
a lot of the tracks on this one sounds like Aussie country songstress Casey Chambers, even Kacey's vocal quality is similar to Casey...
if you like real country music you will inevitably like Kacey, and if you like Kacey you will like Casey...confused yet?
I also have her follow up album, bought that one on the strength of this one and the lead off single "biscuits"...and I cant wait to sink my
teeth into it....

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

BENNY ANDERSSON BAND "story of a heart" cd, 2009

album stats.................#1 Sweden...#29 UK

principle songwriter of ABBA,musicals, soundtracks etc, you name it, he's done it...
he's released/been apart of over forty albums since 1965...
in Sweden the artist name on this one is Benny Andersson's Orkester(im presuming the Ork name refers to Orchestra in English??), but outside Sweden
he gets the Band added to the end of the artist name....
this was one of those discount bin specials for a couple of bucks which I bought on a whim....
songs on here are what Benny calls traditional Scandanavian folk music, in which he does use a lot of traditional instruments...
at least half the tracks on here are instrumentals, but that don't matter, I like just about all of them....
the other tracks are vocal tracks, he uses a male vocalist o two of those and a female on the other three or four...
strange because if I didn't know better id say the female was probably Anna from ABBA....same vocal quality and tone....
the vocal tracks are also very much ABBAish in style, but ABBA in their latter years(think "winner takes it all" sound/style)....
this is a very good album, im sure Jerome would greatly appreciate this one if only for the melody and use of traditional instrumentation

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: Jehu
best track: story of a heart
