What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 13-12-2010

Agree about Pump it up. One of the great singles IMHO.

Have you tried any of the extensive live Phish catalog, Soulman ??

They're a bit like the Grateful Dead in their eagerness to provide endless live albums. There are four in particular that are interesting, all of them Halloween specials where they cover an entire classic album:

- Live Phish Volume 13. 4-discs including a cover of The Beatles' White Album.

- Live Phish Volume 14. Another 4 discs including their cover of Quadrophenia by The Who.

- Live Phish Volume 15. 4 more discs including a cover of Talking Heads' Remain in Light.

- Live Phish Volume 16. Another 4-discer which includes their cover of Loaded by the Velvet Underground.

It's great to hear a good band tear into music with such enthusiasm, and to pay their respects with the covers.

I have heard about the Live album series that they have done, very akin to the Grateful Dead. As for the cover albums, I'm not sure if I would enjoy them as much.

Just discovered a brand new english singer/songwriter called Sharon Leslie via an ad on Facebook. Her current album 'Arts & Allurements' by her 'Band Of Rain' sounds fantastic from the handful of samples I've heard on her myspace page. Music has a similar feel to that of Gary Numan's industrial stuff (1994 onwards). Particular track called 'The Devil's Debts' is very good. Check it out!

Hi Rab, and welcome to MD.

If you're not of a shy nature - and I'm guessing you're not - do an intro thread in the Introductions board to unleash the full MD welcome party.

Hope you enjoy the site.

Keep promising myself to get the other 2, which I still don't have. I have heard them, but I don't own them. Shame on me! An artist who had to have left us way too early in 1974, at the tender age of 26. An apparent prescription drug overdose. This is his second album. I think I saw a complete recap in our Beginners Guide....forum. Helping out on a few tracks here Richard Thompson and John Cale (love Paris 1919). Never a better mix of strings/horns and acoustic guitar. A few of these tracks here, with headphones on and eyes closed, I can just melt away to another world, like my friend Tiggi was talking about somewhere. Even the instrumentals. Of course that first Introduction thing, I don't have time to melt, at 1:31. Never highly promoted this album failed to touch the charts here.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Introduction

Best Track - One Of These Things First

I could have been a sailor, could have been a cook
A real live lover, could have been a book.
I could have been a signpost, could have been a clock
As simple as a kettle, steady as a rock.
I could be
Here and now
I would be, I should be
But how?
I could have been
One of these things first
I could have been
One of these things first.

I could have been your pillar, could have been your door
I could have stayed beside you, could have stayed for more.
Could have been your statue, could have been your friend,
A whole long lifetime could have been the end.
I could be yours so true
I would be, I should be through and through
I could have been
One of these things first
I could have been
One of these things first.

I could have been a whistle, could have been a flute
A real live giver, could have been a boot.
I could have been a signpost, could have been a clock
As simple as a kettle, steady as a rock.
I could be even here
I would be, I should be so near
I could have been
One of these things first
I could have been
One of these things first.

Streamed via Spotify.

Bizarre, instrumental Indie-Electronica. Not the easiest listen, but thought-provoking and surprisingly melodic music.

This mid-career release from 1990 finds them still in thrall to Irish Folk music, but lacks the level of inspiration of their previous effort, Fisherman's Blues.

Alternative Folk-Rock, with lots of Fiddle, Whistle, and Acoustic Guitar. There are even some covers of traditional tunes.

Good, but nowhere near their peak.

These guys just never could crack the ceiling here in the U.S. Respectable band for sure. This third release could only get to #137 here with a much stronger showing in the homeland at #2. Singles were The Cutter and Back Of Love, neither doing anything here. The Cutter is the only track that stood out for me. A couple duds and the rest averaging out. Still the McCulloch/Morrison comparison holds up.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Clay

Best Track - The Cutter

Who's on the seventh floor
Brewing alternatives
What's in the bottom drawer
Waiting for things to give

Spare us the cutter
Spare us the cutter
Couldn't cut the mustard

Conquering myself
Until I see another hurdle approaching
Say we can, say we will
Not just another drop in the ocean

Come to the free for all
With cellotpe and knives
Some of them six feet tall
We will escape our lives

Spare us the cutter
Spare us the cutter
Couldn't cut the mustard

Conquering myself
Until I see another hurdle approaching
Say we can, say we will
Not just another drop in the ocean

Am I the happy loss
Will I still recoil
When the skin is lost
Am I the worthy cross
Will I still be soiled
When the dirt is off

Conquering myself
Until I see another hurdle approaching
Say we can, say we will
Not just another drop in the ocean
Ocean

Watch the fingers close
When the hands are cold

Am I the happy loss
Will I still recoil
When the skin is lost
Am I the worthy cross
Will I still be soiled
When the dirt is off

Am I the happy loss
Will I still be soiled
When the dirt is off

What Are You Listening To? - Thraak - 20-12-2010

One of the most hauntingly beautiful records of all time. Written casually in the studio without the intention of even releasing it, the boys were so impressed with the material that it was promptly recorded and released as a 7 track mini album/EP.

To add the surprise, when released the album immediately hit No.1 on the Billboard US charts (which Alice In Chains had never previously achieved) and for a long time was the only ever EP to make the top of the charts.

Music on this EP is very different to that of AIC's more heavier releases and shows another more intimate, bluesy side to Jerry Cantrell's playing, certainly the side which I prefer although I am a fan of all their releases.

Several of the tracks from this album were later played at AIC's legendary concert for MTV Unplugged series 2 years later. 'Nutshell' became the opening track of the night during which each band member came on stage individually during the intro to an extremely lucky and enthusiastic audience of only approx 200 people. Also, 'No Excuses' which was a No.1 hit from the record, was featured at the concert to great applause.

If you haven't heard this album before I urge you to get it, regardless if your a fan of metal, blues, jazz...whatever. This album breaks the boundaries between those genres and showed for the first time that a metal band could change their style in a dignified way and achieve both artistic and commercial success as a result of that whilst retaining their integrity at all times. Not many bands can do that IMO, especially metal bands but it did inspire one I can think of later on around 10 years later when Pain Of Salvation (another metal band) recorded an album of acoustic reworkings of all their heavy material up until that date and to great avail!

This is a beautiful album and one for every collection.
