Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 04-11-2012

Not my favorite Aretha song...however she's a legend and a powerhouse vocalist!

Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 04-11-2012

Great song, great artist ..... from a great album!
Music Head Wrote:#474 - Van Morrison - Into The Mystic - 1970

running recap for me - 3's=16, 2's=8, 1's=3
this one - **
from the album: Moondance
Written by Van Morrison
Produced by Van Morrison
Chart action: not released as a single

the players on the album:
Van Morrison – vocals, guitar, rhythm guitar, tambourine, harmonica,
Jack Schroer – alto and soprano saxophones
Collin Tilton – flute, tenor saxophone
Jef Labes – organ, piano, clavinet
John Platania – guitar, rhythm guitar
John Klingberg – bass
Gary Mallaber – drums, vibraphone
Guy Masson – conga

Not released as a single. Been wondering if those were considered. Well it is greatest songs, not greatest singles.
Sure opens up the possibilities. Don't think this tune would show up in my list. A good one, but not great. When
asked the meaning of the song, Van didn't have one. No comment here. This is from Van's third album. Critically
acclaimed and on many best of lists, but sales didn't match that. I sometimes forget we're talking song and not
album when I'm doing these. They kind of run together for me. Van dumped his musicians that were used for the
previous Astral Weeks album, picking up an all new cast. After purchasing a new home in Woodstock, he was starting
fresh.

Lyrics

We were born before the wind
Also younger than the sun
Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when the fog horn blows I want to hear it
I don't have to fear it

And I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And magnificently we will flow into the mystic

When that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home
And when that fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it
I don't have to fear it

And I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will flow into the mystic
Come on girl...

Too late to stop now...

#473 - Guns N Roses - Welcome To The Jungle - 1987

running recap for me - 3's=17, 2's=8, 1's=3
this one - ***
from the album: Appetite For Destruction
Written by Guns N Roses
Produced by Mike Clink
Chart action: #7 US, #24 UK,

the players:
Axl Rose - lead vocals, percussion
Izzy Stradlin - rhythm guitar, backing vocals
Slash - lead guitar
Duff McKagan - bass, backing vocals
Steven Adler - drums

From the groups debut album, a quick rise to the top of the glam metal scene with a #1 album. VH1 calls this the
greatest hard rock song of all time. A hefty title to hold. Song was written after Axl's first trip to NYC. Could
refer to any large US city, which is why I don't live in a big city. Studio version of the song is much better than
the chosen clip, but half the fun of hearing GnR is watching Axl perform. Same as Stones/Jagger and Aerosmith/Tyler.
They are all just fun to watch for me.

Lyrics

Welcome to the jungle
We've got fun 'n' games
We got everything you want
Honey, we know the names
We are the people that can find
Whatever you may need
If you got the money, honey
We got your disease

[CHORUS:]

In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your
knees, knees
I wanna watch you bleed

Welcome to the jungle
We take it day by day
If you want it you're gonna bleed
But it's the price you pay
And you're a very sexy girl
That's very hard to please
You can taste the bright lights
But you won't get them for free
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Feel my, my, my serpentine
I, I wanna hear you scream

Welcome to the jungle
It gets worse here everyday
Ya learn ta live like an animal
In the jungle where we play
If you got a hunger for what you see
You'll take it eventually
You can have anything you want
But you better not take it from me

[CHORUS]

And when you're high you never
Ever want to come down, YEAH!

You know where you are
You're in the jungle baby
You're gonna die
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your
knees, knees
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Feel my, my, my serpentine
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your
knees, knees
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your
It' gonna bring you down-HA!

Appetite For Destruction (GnR) is the all-time No.1 selling debut here in the states. Bostons debut is the runner up.

Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 06-11-2012

yep...pretty hard to go past "appetite for destruction" as a great hard rock album...only surpassed by AC/DC's "back in black" for me

#472 - Del Shannon - Runaway - 1961

running recap for me - 3's=18, 2's=8, 1's=3
this one - ***
from the album: Appetite For Destruction
Written by Del Shannon, Max Crook
Produced by Harry Balk, Irving Micahnik
Chart action: #1 US, #1 UK

the players:
Del Shannon - vocals
Max Crook - musitron
other people playing other things

Probably out around the time I turned the radio on in my life. The Beatles were on the horizon. I was patiently
waiting, content with the Beach Boys and Del Shannons smash hit. I could even hit the high notes back then. And that
synthesizer break blew me away. Actually on this it was called a musitron, created by co-writer Max Crook. The song
was Dels' debut single and an appearance on American Bandstand made it a hit, and another teenage heartthrob is
born. He would actually be a ripe 27 at the time, but the girls still screamed.

Lyrics

As I walk along I wonder a-what went wrong
With our love, a love that was so strong
And as I still walk on, I think of the things we've done
Together, a-while our hearts were young

I'm a-walkin' in the rain
Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain
Wishin' you were here by me
To end this misery
And I wonder
I wa-wa-wa-wa-wonder
Why
Ah-why-why-why-why-why she ran away
And I wonder where she will stay
My little runaway, run-run-run-run-runaway

I'm a-walkin' in the rain
Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain
Wishin' you were here by me
To end this misery
And I wonder
I wa-wa-wa-wa-wonder
Why
Ah-why-why-why-why-why she ran away
And I wonder where she will stay
My little runaway, run-run-run-run-runaway
A-run-run-run-run-runaway

Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 06-11-2012

#471 - Cheap Trick - Surrender - 1978

running recap for me - 3's=19, 2's=8, 1's=3
this one - ***
from the album: Heaven Tonight
Written by Rick Nielsen
Produced by Tom Werman
Chart action: #62 US, #79 Canada

the players:
Robin Zander – lead vocals, rhythm guitar
Rick Nielsen – lead guitar, backing vocals
Tom Petersson – bass, backing vocals
Bun E. Carlos – drums

Certainly up there on my list, and I guess my favorite Cheap Trick song. Just the verse about a kid who catches his
parents making out and getting stoned to his Kiss records is enough to make me love it. I even love the live verion
on the Budokan album. For some reason Cheap Trick was huge in Japan. This is just kick ass rock 'n' roll. From the
groups third album. Surprised to see the album or single did not chart that high. In fact I'm surprised the group
was never bigger than they were. A great rock band. Problem now is they are still making music and they are no
longer a great band. But it was fun while it lasted.

Lyrics

Mother told me, yes, she told me
That I'd meet girls like you
She also told me, "Stay away
You'll never know what you'll catch"
Just the other day I heard
Of a soldier's falling off
Some Indonesian junk
That's going round

Your Mommy's all right
Your Daddy's all right
They just seem a little weird
Surrender
Surrender
But don't give yourself away
Hey, heeeeeey

Father says, "Your mother's right
She's really up on things
Before we married, Mommy served
In the WACS in the Philippines"
Now, I had heard the WACS recruited
Old maids for the war
But mommy isn't one of those
I've known her all these years

Your Mommy's all right
Your Daddy's all right
They just seem a little weird
Surrender
Surrender
But don't give yourself away
Hey, heeeeeey

Whatever happened to all this season's
Losers of the year?
Every time I got to thinking
Here'd they disappear?
But when I woke up, Mom and Dad
Are rolling on the couch
Rolling numbers, rock and rollin'
Got my KISS records out

Your Mommy's all right
Your Daddy's all right
They just seem a little weird
Surrender
Surrender
But don't give yourself away
Hey, heeeeeey

Away
Away

Surrender
Surrender
But don't give yourself away
Surrender
Surrender
But don't give yourself away
