What Are You Listening To? - geeeaidan - 13-05-2015 Been listening to/ Watching this acoustic video from Mo Evans & Stephanie Fraser for a while now.. So chilling.. Give it a listen What Are You Listening To? - Thraak - 20-05-2015 Just discovered this alt country artist on youtube, excellent song with an appearance from David Byrne! What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 06-06-2015 Ralph McTellâs Easy. Heâs the âStreets of Londonâ guy and an influential folk darling in the UK. There are a couple of good songs on this album, and some well respected contributing musos (Bert Jansch being one of 'em), but in folk terms, Iâd be inclined to choose other listens over this â with one notable exception. Beautiful song ⦠ What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 16-06-2015 I saw a list of Ian Andersonâs ten favourite folk-rock albums, one of which is Seth Lakemanâs 2008 release, Poor Manâs Heaven, and decided to investigate since I hadnât heard his stuff. Slightly reminiscent of The Decemberists, for the purposes of comparison â I like him â a lot. The lead track from Poor Manâs Heaven â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI448Nurerg He gets more traditional folk right too, in 2011âs Tales from the Barrel House which I also listened to, and may personally prefer. Talented guy this; heâs a multi-instrumentalist, writes good lyrics and gives a nice new edgy, feel to his particular brand of âfolkâ. Not at all stodgy and he has such a fitting name for a folkie too â very earthy! Tales from the Barrel House was recorded independently on his own label, Honour Oak, in a disused cooperage. I love that he pays tribute to his West Country heritage using all sorts of trade implements, an anvil, hammer, chains etc., to create sounds, and that he wrote, produced and played every instrument on all ten tracks (including the old Salvation Army drum). This is absolutely inspired, IMHO â What Are You Listening To? - Jerome - 16-06-2015 Very interesting - thx for the link. What Are You Listening To? - geeeaidan - 26-06-2015 Been listening to Sonia Leigh's tunes all week  If anyone is in London in the next couple of weeks you should try and get to one of her shows https://www.facebook.com/sonialeighmusic/app_123966167614127?ref=page_internal What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-07-2015 ![]() SHAWN PHILLIPS "second contribution" cd, 1970 another disc from Jerome.... i'd never heard of Shawn prior to getting this in the mail a couple of months ago so I was intrigued to say the least as I enjoy picking up on 'new artists' to my ears.... Shawn is a Fort Worth(Texas) native, he's been around since the mid 1960s playing his own material and recording with the lies of Donovan,Steve Winwood,EricClapton, Bernie Taupin amongst others....so he is obviously well known around the traps and well respected by 'those in the know'.... songs on this one(his fifth album release) are folky, bluesy, jazzy and even slightly funky in places.... his vocal quality flits between Gordon Lightfoot,Leonard Cohen,Rodriguez and Cat Stevens in places....and the songs also head off in those directions also.... I love a few tracks on here, like the majority of the rest but theres still a couple im not keen on..... the guy now resides with his wife and kids in South Africa an occasionally plays the odd benefit gig.... all up, a good album from an artist I never knew existed. here's his sort Wiki page if anyone is interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shawn_Phillips#Discography I LIKE THIS ALBUM best track: song for sagittarians worst track: remedial interruption tracks: 1...she was waitin' for her mother at the station in Torino and you know .....I love you baby but its getting too heavy to laugh ** 2...keep on *** 3...sleepwalker ** 4...song for Mr.C *** 5...the ballad of Casey Deiss ** 6...song for Sagittarians *** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtfib03_FGI audio link 7...lookin' up,lookin' down ** 8...remedial interruption(instrumental) * 9...whaz-zat ** 10.schmaltz waltz(instrumental) ** 11.F-Sharp splendour * 12.steel eyes ** 3s=3 2s=7 1s=2 rating: 2.1 What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-07-2015 LITTLE BIG TOWN "pain killer" cd 2014 career stats: studio albums........6 singles.................18 this album.....................#3 US Country.....#7 US singles: "day drinking"................#4 US Country.....#40 US....#1 CAN Country....#30 CAN "girl crush"....................#1 US Country.....#18 US...#11 CAN Country....#29 CAN i'd never heard of this band until MH posted their "girl crush" single as a new release some time back....I fell in love with that track! these guys/gals may have been country at some point, but theyre definitely not country to me....more of a crossover band say, like, Shania Twain.... sure theres a couple of country sounding tracks on this one but theres also some genuine rock and pop also.... sounds like each of the four members of this band get their turn behind the mic, and they can all sing.... a very, very, good album from a group previously unknown to me before this year I LOVE THIS ALBUM worst track: silver and gold best track: girl crush tracks: 1...quit breaking up with me *** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3R5izofehjo live 2...day drinking ** 3...tumble and fall ** 4...pain killer *** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CCpqXrnQOs live 5...girl crush *** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYZMT8otKdI vevo video 6...faster gun *** 7...good people *** 8...stay all night *** 9...save your sin ** 10.live forever *** 11.things you don't think about ** 12.turn the lights on ** 13.silver and gold * 3s=7 2s=5 1s=1 rating: 2.4 What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 19-07-2015 NEIL YOUNG "a letter home" cd, 2012 solo career stats: studio albums............36 singles......................59 this album.............#13 US......#13 CAN.......#17 UK.........#46 AU Neil's thirty-fourth studio album(not counting Stills-Young/Buffalo Springfield/CSNY/soundtrack albums)....... album is a covers set of folky/country songs consisting of tracks by Springsteen,Willie,Dylan,Lightfoot etc.... album was recorded in Jack White's studio in Nashville in one of those old 1940s/50s recording booths, where back then anyone could record a song) novelty idea but lousy sound with no production whatsoever, being as there is only one mic in those booths and they pick up every little sound and the sound fades when youre not facing the mic directly.... Neil describes this effort as a tribute to his dead mother with spoken word commentary between the tracks from Young.... album could have been a good covers set as he picked some good songs to work with, but the recording process lets this one down drastically so I rate this one as the worst album of his career by far, making "trans","life","broken arrow","le noise","re-ac-tor" seem like Grammy Award winning albums compared to it but.... what do I know,"allmusic" rate this one 3.5/5 or converted it equals=2.1 on the MHRS no links getting posted for this one because I couldn't stomach it again! I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM best track........none of them! worst track......all of them(take your pick) tracks: ....."a letter home-intro" 1...changes * 2...girl from the north country * 3...needle of death * 4...early morning rain * 5...crazy * 6...reason to believe * 7...on the road again * 8...if you could read my mind * 9...since I met you * 10.my hometown * 11.i wonder if I care as much * 3s=0 2s=0 1s=11 rating: 1.0 What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 08-08-2015 THE HIGHWAYMEN "highwayman" cd, 1985 stats: studio albums..............3 singles........................5 this album...................................#1 US.....#3 CAN...#20 AU singles: "highwaymen".............................#1 US.....#1 CAN...#98 AU "desperado's waiting for a train"...#15 US...#25 CAN Willie Nelson,Waylon Jennings,John Cash and Kris Kristofferson teamed up to form an 'outlaw country' Supergroup.... now between them they have recorded 185 studio albums, 399 singles, 173 compilations and 24 live albums so theres a hell of a lot of experience on this album.... tracks on here are all covers, either tracks they all like by other artists or re-recording their own tunes... most song vocals are divided up equally, with all four members sharing duties on most tracks.... are couple of tracks though are duets between Willie and John... all these tracks have that classic 'outlaw' sound and lyrics you'd expect off these guys.... youre either going to love or hate this album, me, im a huge fan of Willie,John and Kris...I still haven't, after all these years, made my mind up about Waylon yet...I really cant decide whether I like him or not, maybe I should get a compilation of his to decide once and for all! these guys made three albums together and this is by far the best IMO....nothing wrong with the other two, justnot as many great tunes on those... thankfully, I did see these guys in concert some twenty years ago and it remains a treasured memory to this day! I LOVE THIS ALBUM worst track: deportee best track: committed to Parkview tracks: 1...highwayman ** 2...the last cowboy song *** 3...jim,I wore a tie today *** 4...big river *** 5...committed to Parkview *** 6...desperado's waiting for a train ** 7...deportee ** 8...welfare line *** 9...against the wind ** 10.the twentieth century is almost over *** 3s=6 2s=4 1s=0 rating: 2.6 |
