Born on this day ... - Ruby - 03-04-2017 ^I used to love listening to Vienna, the album. Born on this day ... - Ruby - 03-04-2017 David Ragsdale was born on this day in 1958 in Atlanta, Georgia. He is most recently the violinist for Kansas (1991 to 1996, and from 2006 to the present), having also been involved with Louise Mandrell, The Smashing Pumpkins, Jason Bonham, Spockâs Beard, Queensrÿche and others. Heâs been playing the fiddle since the age of three, is classically trained, and was involved in orchestral work before moving into rock. He certainly knows how to wield the horsehairs, and in addition to the above, has released one solo album, David and Goliath. This is from that, and while the title of the piece is a pretty dreadful pun, itâs fortunately not too terrible a piece of music! I give you ⦠âBach Stabberâ ⦠lol! :rolleyes2: Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 03-04-2017 back on the Ultravox..."vienna" is one of my favourite songs of all time... and people seem to forget the Midge Ure was jointly responsible for the whole Band Aid/Live Aid with Bob Geldof, but because Midge was a private/reserved/camera shy person and Geldof did all the publicity interviews etc, he was the "forgotten" one... I was actually looking for another track to link, an often overlooked Midge Ure solo single, but I found this one instead, an acoustic version of "vienna"...the guy can still sing: Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 03-04-2017 this is the one I was going to post... Born on this day ... - Ruby - 06-04-2017 ^^Who knew an unplugged "Vienna" would be so effective?! Thirty something years later. Wow! Born on this day ... - Ruby - 06-04-2017 Warren Haynes was born on this day in 1960, in Asheville, North Carolina. He is probably best known for his association with the Allman Brothers and his and Govât Mule, and has also performed extensively with the Dave Matthews Band and with the remaining members of the Grateful Dead. He is a southern rock/blues/jam/soul man ⦠a guitarist/singer/songwriter/record producer who also has a number of solo albums under his belt, the most recent of which is his collaboration with Railroad Earth. I think they complement one another very well â nice album ⦠Ashes & Dust. This is from that ⦠ Born on this day ... - Ruby - 14-04-2017 Barrett Martin was born on this day in 1967, in Seattle, Washington, so I guess his emergence onto the grunge scene was a given! He is primarily a drummer and was with Mark Lanegan and the Screaming Trees, amongst others, but has come a long way since then, including having been ordained as a Zen monk and also having travelled extensively all around the world. From his website bio â¦. âHe holds a masters degree in anthropology & linguistics, and is an adjunct professor in the liberal arts department at Antioch University Seattle. He has played on over 100 albums, and has studied music in West Africa, Latin America, Cuba, Brazil, the Peruvian Amazon, Australia, New Zealand, and Alaska. His academic work has included talks and teaching at New York University, Occidental College, Emory University, the University Of Georgia, the University Of Alaska, and the University Of New Mexico. He is the founder of the record label Sunyata Records, and when he is not on tour or in a classroom, he produces albums that range from indigenous music, to folk, jazz, blues, and of course, rock and roll. He was recently awarded the 2014 ASCAP award for excellence in writing. (He writes for the Huffington Post, I see ⦠http://www.huffingtonpost.com/barrett-martin/touring-technology-and-th_b_6019582.html) A short synopsis of his studies around the world include work with Garifuna drummers in Belize, Wolof drummers in Senegal, Ewe drummers in Ghana, Santeria drummers in Cuba, Candomble drummers in Brazil, the singing Shipibo Shamans of the Peruvian Amazon, Delta Blues musicians, Arabic musicians, Native American musicians, and various recording projects around the world â¦â In 1996, he, Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Skerik (Critters Buggin) and Justin Harwood (Luna, the Chills) formed a collaborative experimental group they named Tuatara in order to play the type of music that they normally wouldnât, in their respective bands. They sometimes have as many as eleven artists taking part in the project, and the line-up changes as they go along - instrumental pieces, very percussive and focused on tribal beats as it would be, given Martinâs interests. I quite like what they do ⦠no idea how to describe it ⦠jungle meets fusion meets funk meets rock maybe?? Lol! Here's a track that's on a live album as well as on Underworld, their latest ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxiqtFLNo3Y And hereâs âFloat like a Butterflyâ because that describes Martin Barrett's drumming ethos ⦠tonal - shades of light and dark - there are nods to Muhammed Ali throughout his work, he aims to drum as Ali fought ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXrrEMatE-0 Aaand a Tuatara KEXP concert where they perform four other tracks from their latest album, Underworld, just for fun ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNq8S8fHv0M Aaaand this because Iâm a sucker for Mark Laneganâs voice and Barrett is on his covers album, Imitations, and because he contributes drums and percussion to this oldie ⦠âAutumn Leavesâ ⦠ Born on this day ... - Ruby - 18-04-2017 Madeleine Peyroux was born on this in 1974, in Athens, Georgia, USA. She is French American and moved to France with her mother at the age of thirteen where a couple of years later, she started singing and performing in the Latin quarter of Paris. At sixteen, she joined The Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band and toured Europe with them; a jazz and blues singer, her voice and style has been likened to that of Billie Holiday ⦠she has seven solo albums to her credit. I like her cover of Leonard Cohenâs âDance me to the End of Loveâ ⦠think she does a great job of it ⦠she plays a lot of covers and standards along with her own compositions - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqpOFQvMM1A This was co-written by herself, Jesse Harris and Larry Klein â both these tracks are from her album Careless Love ⦠ Born on this day ... - Ruby - 02-05-2017 David Rhodes was born on this day in 1956, in London, England. At first listen, without knowing, one might be forgiven for mistaking him for a less gritty Peter Gabriel, in all likelihood in large part thanks to his extensive recording and touring career with the latter. Thatâs not entirely fair to either, I guess; while there are most certainly similarities, there are also very definite distinctions. He joined Gabriel for the ex-Genesis manâs third solo album and has appeared on virtually everything heâs done since, both live and in studio. Rhodes is a guitarist, singer and songwriter who was also a member of the band Random Hold; he has two solo albums under his belt, has made a couple of recordings under The David Rhodes Band moniker, and has a string of guest/session appearances to his credit, including with (but not exclusive to) artists such as Toni Childs, Talk Talk, Roy Orbison, Loreena McKennit, Paul McCartney, Manu Katche, Joan Armatrading, Gowan, Tim Finn, and, errr â¦... Blancmange. From Peter Gabrielâs Plays Live ⦠âI Have the Touchâ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mlo70hRMP3I From PGâs Ovo ⦠Paul Buchanan and Elizabeth Fraser on vocals ⦠âDownside Upâ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2TZyYkohxk The David Rhodes Bandâs âWaggle Danceâ which is a lot rockier than it âsoundsâ! ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbCPAAPeZMY His album Bittersweet was, by all accounts, a dedicated labour of love which took some time to perfect and complete â itâs good, IMHO â gets better the deeper in you go. I cannot access the YT clip for my favourite track which is âIf It Could Only Be That Easyâ and will have to make do with the lead which is titled âReality Slipsâ ⦠nice strings throughout the album by The Tosca String Quartet ⦠ Born on this day ... - Ruby - 08-05-2017 Keith Jarrett was born on this day in 1945, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA. He is a renowned jazz and classical pianist and a possessor of absolute pitch â apparently one in ten thousand have this rare innate ability. A child prodigy, he started playing the piano at just shy of three years old and gave his first formal recital at age seven. Heâs been associated with the cognoscenti of the jazz world, Mile Davis, Art Blakey, Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, to name but a few, and he is also known for a few idiosyncrasies, such as feeding cough drops to people attending his shows in colder weather in an attempt to thwart audience noise which irritates the living daylights out of him, performing in the dark so as to prevent the taking of photographs and during performances, he tends to make very audible vocalizations (when heâs playing jazz or improv, that is, not so when in classical mode). If anyone has the inclination, this is a worthwhile listen - The Köln Concert â the link is to the full album ⦠the concert almost didnât happen and heâs playing here on a sub-standard piano which is part of the story â it must have hurt, but he coaxes amazing sound out of it ⦠a true master this, no poor craftsman blaming his tools! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_IEjONNRSw And the short and sweet âIntroduction and Yaqui Indian Folk Songâ from his Treasure Island album ⦠ |
