Politics - Jerome - 12-09-2016 It has happened before in numerous countries around the world but it seems that in the USA you need bucket loads of money just to get to the starting line. That's why it ends up with the candidates it does. It's a sad state of affairs indeed. As for leaders who have come from nothing, Lech Walesa from Poland springs to mind, as does Nelson Mandela & Aung San Suu Kyi, but there are many more examples - google it. People who overcame staggering odds to lead their countries in a new direction. It can be done. And all of these leaders knew about what life was really like on the ground. Yeah, here it seems most candidates have enough money to enter politics, I mean it takes a lot of money to run a campaign...the more you have, the better chance you have of getting elected since you can afford to advertise your campaign. Politics seems like an extravagant and pricey world from where I stand as a lower middle class worker. Also influence helps too and the every day person doesn't exactly have that. Politics - Jerome - 12-09-2016 Yes, you are right there - you do need some influence in the right places to get noticed. I hear figures being thrown around all the time about what campaigns cost. Hideously expensive hobby! Politics - Oceansoul - 12-09-2016 Jerome Wrote:Yes, you are right there - you do need some influence in the right places to get noticed. I hear figures being thrown around all the time about what campaigns cost. Hideously expensive hobby! Exactly. If you shake hands with the right powerful people you need, they can fund you, they can spread your name around to other people in the upper echelons of politics, etc. Power dynamics and networking is a big thing. All the money that gets thrown around is crazy, heck even the White House one night dinner parties can cost up to a million dollars or so. Also the 2012 Presidential Election cycle cost up to 2 billion dollars... it's just wow. Politics - Lovely Linda - 13-09-2016 Jerome Wrote:Anyone seen the amount of YT videos questioning the state of Hillary Clinton's health. I am no expert on these matters but something is seriously wrong with her. Looks like she is having some sort of seizure in one of them??!!?? If she is indeed ill - and she would surely be aware of this - why is she risking her health by continuing with her campaign and also possibly compromising the highest office in the land? Only one answer - naked ambition. Win at any cost seems to be the motto here.I've seen those videos on the news. Seems to me it is something besides what the so called doctor of hers is saying. All of these falling spells are suspicious! Looks to me from experience I have had with my hubby, she has a brain problem. Possibly strokes which is why she is on coumadin. Politics - Music Head - 13-09-2016 on the wealth issue while you can certainly make that case with our current candidates other than the Bush's and Kennedy our recent presidents have not been wealthy when elected even the Clinton's did not reach that status until Bill became president Politics - CRAZY-HORSE - 13-09-2016 wealthy as in how much???? because I thought your President's had to be millionaires to run for office for the simple reason that they could not (or should not) be able to be bribed if they had money?? Politics - CRAZY-HORSE - 13-09-2016 a couple of articles on the "net worth" of US Presidents: http://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2015/may/07/bill-clinton/bill-clinton-we-had-lowest-net-worth-any-president/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Presidents_by_net_worth Politics - Music Head - 13-09-2016 CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:wealthy as in how much????not sure where you got that not true Politics - Music Head - 13-09-2016 CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:a couple of articles on the "net worth" of US Presidents:wiki chart says peak net worth I'm speaking the silver spoon kind |
