William âBillâ Payne was born on this day in Waco, Texas, in 1949. He is the co-founder, only continuous, and sole surviving band member of the original Little Feat. He is a keyboard magician whoâs played with literally hundreds of artists as a session man which may be one of the reasons heâs only released one solo album thus far â too busy! Little Feat, in their present incarnation, don't seem to have disbanded, but I see he has most recently joined the Doobie Brothers as a permanent member of their current line-up.

Happy Birthday and congratulations to Dame Vera Lynn, known as the sweetheart of the armed forces ... she attains the grand age of one hundred years today! In honour of the auspicious occasion, there was a projection of her image onto the white cliffs of Dover today. Not sure from where, or how viewable that would have been by the population at large, but anyway ⦠semantics!
By all accounts, she deserves every accolade sheâs ever received ⦠entertainment wasnât just a frivolous thing for her, it was a job she took very seriously, singing for soldiers, and she really grasped the terrible impact of war ⦠she opened lines of communication, you could say, where there were none. Her career extended further during and after the war, into radio, connecting and re-connecting families through that medium, relaying messages and singing âForces Favouritesâ, and later into TV. Her hallmarks seem to have been sincerity, humility and a genuine interest in life and people.
A few records have been broken now, including that of 93 years in industry; she started singing on stage at the age of seven, she is the oldest living artist to have achieved a placing in the charts with the release in 2009 of her compilation album, Weâll Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn, and she is also the first centenarian to have released an album.
That album, Vera Lynn 100, which was released a couple of days ago comprises newly orchestrated versions of her favourite songs alongside her original recordings, of which this must be a relatively recent one (as in sometime during the past thirty years! Lol!) â¦

The incredible David Perry Lindley was born on this day in 1944, in San Marino, California. Heâs been called a âmaxiâ as opposed to âmultiâ instrumentalist and is an expert on stringed things. He plays acoustic and electric guitar, upright and electric bass guitar, banjo, oud, mandolin, lap steel guitar, hardingfele, bouzouki, cittern, bağlama, cumbus, charango, cümbüş, ud, violin, weissenborn, zither and dobro.
Heâs had his own band, El Rayo-X, been one of a duo, made solo albums and done session work alongside many, many artists, his association with Jackson Browne being a prime example; âThe Load Outâ not to mention a host of other songs, just wouldnât be the same without his magnificent contributions on the fiddle and the slide ⦠oh ⦠and the falsetto! And another one ⦠Franco Mussida was born on this day in 1947 in Milan, Italy. He is a very well thought of guitarist, also a singer, and he was a founder and the lead vocalist of Italian prog rock group Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM); he left them in 2015, having stayed around for 45 years. He has also released three solo albums, founded a school for popular and jazz music education, and he participates in other artistic endeavours/installations/projects, such as resonant sculpture, for example.
PFM appeared on Greg Lakeâs radar when ELP was touring Italy in the early seventies, and he was taken with them enough to use his influence to help get them signed to Manticore, ELPâs label at the time. Their first album on that label was Photos of Ghosts, which is pretty impressive â they have a fairly large catalogue, including some English works, or English versions of works, and a number of live albums for which they seem to have earned quite a lot of respect. Incidentally, Ian Anderson is a guest on one of âem, Live in Roma (with Ian Anderson).

Steve Tilston was born on this day in Liverpool, England, in 1950. He is a folk singer and guitarist and he also plays the arpeggione which is a âsix-stringed musical instrument, fretted and tuned like a guitar, but bowed like a cello, and thus similar to the bass viola da gamba.â Looks beautiful ⦠an instrument that harks back to medieval times, from what I gather.
He ran a folk club in the 80âs with Bert Jansch and was on John Renbournâs Ship of Fools so kept some fairly illustrious company, and heâs performed and recorded with a few other musicians, including Maggie Boyle, his partner.
His most recent boost in the fame department comes in the form of the 2015 movie âDanny Collinsâ, starring Al Pacino. I quote âLennon had read an interview with Steve in ZigZag Magazine in which he was asked how he thought finding fame and fortune would affect him as an artist. Steve responded that he thought it would be a corrupting influence. The letter from Lennon offered encouragement, telling Steve not to give up ⦠âBeing rich doesn't change your experience in the way you think,â Lennon wrote. It was signed "Love John and Yoko.â Although it included Lennonâs telephone number Steve didnât become aware of the letter until 2005, 25 years after Lennonâs death. Once out of the bag, the story caught fire and eventually inspired the film.â â¦.

Happy Birthday to Tony Banks, born on this day in 1950, in Sussex, England. He is a founding member of Genesis and he and Mike Rutherford are the only two to have remained with the band throughout its history. Heâs a keyboardist, but also a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. In addition to Genesis, heâs released some solo albums and had some success scoring movies; he is also widely recognised for his pioneering and innovative keyboard and synthesizer work.

Billy Currie was born on this day in 1950, in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. He is a pianist/keyboardist and plays the violin/viola, writes and composes. Initially with Visage for a short while, he was one of the founders of Ultravox and has also released a considerable number of solo albums. Heâs had a few interesting collaboration during the course of his career, not least of which with Steve Howe whoâs credited on his debut album Transportation.
From Wiki: âCurrie is noted for his use of analogue synthesizers, such as the Elka Rhapsody, and in particular his trademark soloing sound, which typically consisted of soaring fluid lines on an ARP Odyssey, making use of oscillator sync, later re-created with the Oxford Synthesizer Company "OSCar" synth. Currie's original instrument whilst at music college was the viola, and he frequently added solo violin or viola to the arrangements of songs he played on, a relatively unusual choice in pop music.
