RAY PRICE "beauty is....the final sessions" cd, 2014

career stats:
studio albums......52
singles...............116

this album stats: #22 US Country, #143 US

as the title suggests...from his last recording sessions prior to his death...
word has it he recorded these tracks as a gift to his wife to honour her for standing by him all those decades...
and what a beautiful collection it is...
the songs sum up his age,his regrets, his love for his wife and his coming to peace with the fact his time was drawing near...
vocally he has the same frailty and strength in his voice as John Cash did on his final American Recordings albums...
its like he is baring his soul, yet starngely enough, cleansing it at the same time to 'be at peace' with his life...
now im not a big fan of Price by any means, but when i heard a couple of these tracks on the radio when it was released i knew i had to get this collection...
damn it, some of these tracks actually put a lump in my throat in places...its real emotive stuff...
im sure that if i was a few years older these songs might make me shed a tear....
very good stuff IMO and well worth a listen if you dont mind tearjerkers!

Producer: Albert B. Grossman

1st compilation album - #15 US

Manager Albert Grossman booked them at The Bitter End in Greenwich Village in 1961 and they were a hit. The first album came a year later, went to #1 and has gone double platinum. Nice accomplishment for a debut album. Even more recognition came after their performance at the Civil Rights March on Washington in 1963. Dylan's Blowin' In The Wind became an anthem for the movement. Those were the days my friend. The only #1 single the group had was John Denver's Leaving On A Jet Plane, one of the five love tracks on here. Fav goes to Puff, no it's not about drugs. The trio split in 1970 to pursue solo projects. Reunited in 1978 but the glory years were gone. Continued touring until Mary's death in 2009 from leukemia.

Charley's big success came in the early 70's when he became the best selling performer for RCA Records since The King. His dream prior to that was becoming a professional baseball player. He pursued that dream for about 10 years bouncing around in the Negro League, minus a stint for Uncle Sam. He finally gave it up and went after his back up dream of becoming a country music star. Charley had made some demos at Sun Studios in 1958 which were eventually heard by Chet Atkins and was signed to RCA in 1965. His first hit was Just Between You And Me and it got him a Grammy. Charley was off and running. A string of 14 top 10 country albums through those early 70,s. He also had some crossover appeal with 10 of those albums showing up on the big chart. This compilation contains some good tracks of the 16 included but considering Charley Prides output can't be very complete. His last charting album was in 1989 but his last release was in 2011. Nothing on this set past 1989. And Charley still has his baseball passion as he is now part majority owner of the Texas Rangers.

KASEY CHAMBERS "bittersweet" cd,2014

career stats:
studio albums(solo).................................7
studio albums(with Shane Nicholson).........2
singles..................................................22

this album stats: #2 AU
singles:
"wheelbarrow"......no chart action

Aussie songstress' Kasey's nineth career album(including the ones she did with husband Shane)...
not as strictly bluegrass/country as her previous efforts, infact, the lead-off single "wheelbarrow" has more of a rock sound than country...
...and the country music fans out here stayed away from it in droves, but it did reach #2 on the charts...
her least selling album and rightfully so and probably my least favourite also...
that said though, there are still a few gems on it including "house on a hill" which Dolly,Loretta or any other female country singer could have recorded...
nowhere near my favourite Kasey album as previously stated but still way better than most of the so-called country music out there at the moment...
and damn it! theres no links for my two "love" tracks!
and interestingly enough(and purely by coincidence)...the title track is a duet with Bernard Fanning.

BOB DYLAN "bob dylan" vinyl/cd, 1962

career stats:
studio albums................36

this album..........#13 UK

Bob's debut album....
only two originals on here in "talking' new york" and "song to woody". the rest are either traditional folk songs or covers of standards....
the guy still had talent even though theres only two self compsed tracks on here...he has the wordplay and style already to go for the next fifty plus years...
i love a lot of the covers also simply becasue ive not heard any other versions of them, so to me, theyre Dylan songs...
Bob's 37th studio album get released this week also...

BOB DYLAN "the freewheelin' bob dylan" cd, 1963

album stats: #22 US, #1 UK

Dylan's second, and unlike his debut most of the tracks here were written by the Great Man himself...
album is ranked at #97 on the Rolling Stone 'all time top500' list...
it is also one of only fifty albums inducted into the National Recording Registry...
this is classic Dylan, just him, guitar and harmonica...
when you look at this one,see the guy is only 23 and theres more 'classic' songs on here than most artists make in a career...
awesome stuff and should be essential part of everyone's cd/record collection

why is Dylan the only major artist that there are few links for?

What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 09-02-2015

i dont know...its been that way forever as far as im aware....?!

Music Head Wrote:why is Dylan the only major artist that there are few links for?

Excellent question. Not busting but: because his fans decline to do so, in part maybe because he's too idiosyncratic to encapsulate (stayed up all night thinking of that one). I personally only overview artists otherwise overlooked but Mr. Dylan is due a Thread or two all his own. Any takers? Actually, any givers?
