^Oops. That would be formerly!! Lol! Autocorrect ...

Another notable birthday today is that of Dame Shirley Bassey. She was born on this day in Cardiff, Wales, in 1937 which makes her 80.

She was known for a couple of Bond theme songs and is probably not at all known for her part in Chris Rea's commercially unsuccessful movie, La Passione.

Dave Matthews was born on this day in 1967, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent some years in the USA while growing up, returned to SA, and then left again after finishing school and when faced with conscription. He is now based in Seattle and in addition to music, is making wine under his Dreaming Tree label (a song title from a DMB album).

He was first better known for acting rather than his music, although he’d been playing the acoustic guitar from the age of nine. His Dave Matthews Band was formed in 1991 and they primarily focus on live performances, for which they are highly regarded; they’ve released 60 live albums, as opposed to eight studio releases. He’s won two Grammys, one as a solo act and the other with DMB, as well as a couple of film and TV music awards.

From Wiki “During the period from 2000 to 2010, his band sold more tickets and earned more money than any other act in North America. The band's most recent (studio) album, Away from the World, released in 2012, made them the only group to have six consecutive studio albums debut at number one on the Billboard charts.” Who’da thought??!

Donald Fagen was born on this day in 1948, in Passaic, New Jersey. He and Walter Becker formed Steely Dan subsequent to their meeting at college after leaving school. At age 11 he was encouraged by a family member to go to the Newport Jazz Festival and almost instantly became what he refers to as a “jazz snob”, after which he "… lost interest in rock 'n' roll and started developing an anti-social personality." Lol!

He is a frequent user of aliases, some of which are Illinois Elohainu, Phonus Quaver and Harlan Post (who he credits when he programs or plays a synthesizer part to emulate a real instrument, but he also used Tristan Fabriani when playing on stage with Jay and the Americans who both he and Becker belonged to pre Steely Dan). Steely Dan released nine studio albums, disbanding in 1981 and reuniting temporarily between 2000 and 2003.

Aside from Steely Dan, Donald Fagen has made four solo albums, his autobiographical debut The Nightfly receiving clamorous acclaim; or perhaps clamorous is the wrong word since it’s recognised as being ground-breaking in terms of digital recording quality and is a firm favourite among audiophiles. The album garnered seven Grammy nominations in 1983, but mysteriously doesn’t seem to have raked in any of the actual awards! The big hit single from this album was “I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)” which, and I quote, “refers to the "International Geophysical Year", an event that ran from July 1957 to December 1958. The I.G.Y. was an international scientific project promoting collaboration among the world's scientists. Fagen's lyrics reference, from the point of view of that time, an optimistic vision of futuristic concepts such as solar-powered cities, a transatlantic tunnel, permanent space stations, and spandex jackets.” Here is said song … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sogYgHlNnqo. (And as a footnote, his album Morph the Cat won that elusive Grammy in 2006 for Best Surround Sound Album.)

In 2010, Mr Fagen, Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs formed The Dukes of September and thus far have been a touring band with a DVD available, but no album, as such, as yet.

The title tracks from two SD albums, because they’re both exceptional IMHO …

“Aja” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fG2seugAgnU

“Gaucho” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYryV8og6Ms,

And, I have heard his Sunken Condos (2012) which is very accessible and great listening IMHO … super duper funky stuff with big generous rhythms. He always seems to work with a veritable flotilla of most excellent musos who I am quite sure, contribute in no small way to his fantastic, warm, whole sounds. This one is especially for those climate change denialists … Angel:wink:.

Pete Trewavas was born on this day in 1959, in Middlesborough, North Yorkshire, England.

He is the longstanding bassist for Marillion (35 years, to be precise) and has been involved in a few side projects as well, while remaining a full member of Marillion. Of those projects, the duo he formed with Eric Blackwood interests me the most; they named it Edison’s Children. Transatlantic and Kino would be the other two so-called supergroups.

As Edison’s Children, they play most of the instruments (and all the non-instruments) themselves (with the occasional appearance of guest artists, like the entire cast of Marillion, lol!), but seriously they’ve come up with two not too shabby concept albums, and one of bits and pieces which isn’t as striking. I think that both Trewavas and Blackwood’s vocal abilities and musical sensibilities are on a par which creates a balanced ‘dance’ between them – I can’t hear any egos getting in the way. Nice … will be going back for more listens …

A re-arrangement of a track that appears on the second album, The Final Breath Before November – can’t find a clip of the original. Jakko Jakszyk engineered this version from their third bits and pieces album, Somewhere Between Here and There … (and a juicy little factoid – Rick Armstrong, son of astronaut Neil, did a guest spot with the band live, in Montreal, as 2nd lead and synth guitarist, and on the basis of that, was invited to join them, making his recording debut on this album.)

Happy Birthday to chanteuse, Françoise Madeleine Hardy who was born on this day in 1944, in Paris, France.

In 2015, she announced that she was officially ending her musical career; her 27[SUP]th[/SUP] and final album was 2012’s L’Amour fou (Crazy Love) which she made exactly fifty years after releasing her debut, Tous les garçons et les filles, which also goes under The "Yeh-Yeh" Girl From Paris!

Madame Hardy seems to have been ever the effortlessly and naturally elegant style icon, never embroiled in scandal and a somewhat shy performer despite being known for the sensuality of her singing. She consistently made popular records throughout her career … a true voice and a class act IMHO …

The title track from her final album, “L’Amour fou”, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igPahY_s_70

“Viens” the lead track from the album La Question, which she is said to be most proud of and which is critically acclaimed although not as warmly embraced in her native France as it was elsewhere … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NizFel15RVU

And “The Rose” (no, not the song from the movie, the French original is "Mon amie la rose") from Françoise Hardy Sings in English because I have the record …

Bill Miller was born on this day in 1955, on the Stockbridge-Munsee reservation, northern Wisconsin. His Mohican name is Fush-Ya Heay Aka, which translates to ‘bird song’, so I guess his musicianship was an inevitability!

Miller is known for his proficiency in playing the Native American flute and makes a blend of folk/rock/countryish and traditional music. He says he draws on three resources which he presents to his audience; his heritage, his life experience and his spiritual path. These, he says are the three ingredients that he uses in his music and his painting (he’s an artist too) and that that is all he needs. He sees music as being redemptive and is big on using his own particular brand for the purpose of helping people in the processes of healing and reconciliation … in a broad sense, that is, reconciliation with circumstances, whatever they happen to be – truth seeking, in a way … he is looking to offer others a means of emotional healing through what he does – that is his vision. When he performs, he is known to hand himself over ‘unwrapped’, to quote him directly.

He got his first big break in Nashville through Tori Amos who asked him to open for her on her Under the Pink tour after hearing his The Red Road album. Since then he has gone on to receive many accolades, including three Grammy Awards and loads of Native American Music Awards. He has collaborated with a diverse array of other musicians, touring with Richie Havens, TheBoDeans, Eddie Vedder, John Carter Cash, Arlo Guthrie and The Israel Netanya Kibbutz Orchestra!

An instrumental from his Art of Survival album … “Wind Spirit” … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hi6rak-MZeU

And two from Ghostdance, the album with which I am most familiar … the title track, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0opaXOeVUFM, and the simply fantabulous final track, “The Sun Is Gonna Rise” … with lots of lovely strings …

Nicholas Berkley Mason was born on this day in 1944, in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Aside from being a bit of a speed freak and classic car enthusiast, and having himself participated in some high profile races, not to mention holding a pilot’s licence and an honorary doctorate from the University of Westminster’s School of Architecture and Built Design, he is the only member of Pink Floyd to have played on each of their albums.

As a teenager, with the advent of rock ‘n roll, he and some friends decided to form a band, even although none of them had a single clue how to play any instruments. One of his aspiring bandmates had already claimed the guitar spot so he put his hand up for the drums, asked for money for Christmas instead of gifts, scratched together £7.50, went off to a drum shop, loaded himself up a “Gigster bass drum, a snare drum, a pair of bongo’s, a ‘sort-of’ high hat, and a cymbal”, lumped it all home on the tube, and that was pretty much that! Humble beginnings indeed! Just goes to show … where there’s a will, there’s usually a way (if not a relative, lol!).
