What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 10-11-2010

Controversial outfit from Slovenia. It seems they are an "art" project who've dabbled with Nazi imagery (despite denying any Nazi tendencies), and have variously been described as Nazis, Anarchists, & Communists. Irrespective of their music, they appear to be adept at courting controversy.

Putting all of that aside, I bought this because it's an album of re-imagined National Anthems (real ones), with some provocative lyric changes. Caught my interest.

The music could almost fit into the Electronica category, but I feel it's more of a toned-down Industrial album.

Interesting, and pretty good.

Don't know much about this English bad. Only thing I have and it's not too bad. Garage band sound that do a lot of covers I guess. Shows ten albums to their credit and this is the second. No success here but maybe elsewhere. Wiki shows a cover of The Standells Dirty Water as denting the charts but it's not on this one. Best known song here is probably Talk Talk which is ok. A couple of great tracks to kick it off, with a couple of duds thrown in. Shows the band is still together after 30 years so they must be doing something right.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Feelin' Good

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros - Self Titled Album

This is their first album. They are an indie roch group. The lead singer used to be in a power pop band called Ima Robot from the 90s. I saw them live about 4 months ago and they played nearly the whole album and every song was unique and easy to listen to. Definitely not everyones cup of tea, but worth trying. You may recognize some of their songs from some commercials that came out recently like "Home" and "Janglin."

Almost fits under Electronica, but...

Slightly psychedelic Alternative something or other from American duo.

Produced by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips house producer, and ex-Mercury Revist) who specialises in a dense, indiosyncratic sound, and whilst this certainly has some of that Fridmann sound, it's one of his more restrained & sympathetic production jobs.

The music does bear some resemblance to a more keyboard centred Flaming Lips. Perhaps some of that is Fridmann's doing ?!

Mark Linkous' post-OD album.

Mostly simple, chilled Alternative ballads, with a few Rocking curveballs for good measure.

ML's hushed vocals suit the music well.

Two discer featuring Suicide's second studio album from 1980, plus a disc of pre-demo material from 1975.

The music is a fusion of Electro-Pop and Punk attitude (if not sound), and synths throb, whilst drum machines clatter, and Alan Vega moans. The pervasive mood is one of faint menace, but there are some lovely melodic songs which act as a counterpoint. Surprised to find that Ric Ocasek of The Cars was in the producer's chair...

The second disc is altogether more unhinged, spacey, and downright strange, and makes for some unsettling listening.

Good album...
