Born on this day ... - Ruby - 03-01-2017 Guy Pratt was born on this day in 1962, in London, England. Heâs a prolific session bass player and quite a funny man. Heâs done stand-up shows about his experiences in the music industry (which are multitude) and written a book titled My Bass and Other Animals. He started out being invited to join Icehouse, who supported David Bowie on his Serious Moonlight tour and it was all plain sailing from there; he got noticed by all sorts of people with whom he has played over the years - Pink Floyd (he's married to Richard Wright's daughter, Gala), David Gilmour, Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, Madonna, Michael Jackson, The Smiths, Robert Palmer, Echo & the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears, Bananarama, Iggy Pop, Tom Jones, Debbie Harry, Whitesnake, Womack & Womack, Kirsty MacColl, Gary Moore, Coverdale Page, Lemon Jelly, The Orb, All Saints, Stephen Duffy, Robbie Robertson, and A. R. Rahman. Some of his stand up â¦. (and hereâs the performance at the Royal Albert Hall that heâs referring to ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkN7qyaFEUU) Born on this day ... - Inna Selez - 03-01-2017 You won't believe guys December 31 we missed Park Jae-sang birthday. I bet you saw him... Born on this day ... - Ruby - 03-01-2017 ^Maybe we missed him on purpose. But we didnât; he was acknowledged last year on this thread as âdemonstrating the depths to which popular music can sinkâ. Lol! Thanks for the contributions Inna, but please try to keep it current â itâs Born on this day ⦠thatâs the whole idea â chronological order. Born on this day ... - Ruby - 04-01-2017 Robin Guthrie was born on this day in 1962, in Grangemouth, Scotland. He was a co-founder of the Cocteau Twins and is a multi-instrumentalist and composer, as well as knowing his stuff in the field of sound processing, programming and sampling; he is an audio engineer and producer. After the twins (who were actually triplets) disbanded, he went on to release five solo albums, became a member of Violet Indiana for the first half of the 2000âs, and has also recorded a number of collaborative efforts including scores, notably with Harold Budd. Iâm not sure how to define his work ⦠electronic, bit of shoegaze, dream pop, post rock, ambient, alternative ⦠many different elements! This track was produced and co-written by RG and it's his guitar ⦠I think he produced the album as a whole too. He is a German songwriter, musician, actor, poet, pyrotechnician and lead singer of band Rammstein. Band has sold over 10 million records, 5 albums have platinum status. Lindemann has been listed among The 50 Greatest Metal Frontmen of All Time by Roadrunner Records. He has appeared in some films and also has published 2 books of poetry. Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 08-01-2017 ELVIS PRESLEY born 1935, would have been 82 had he still been alive ( he died in 1977) one of the first rockers from the 1950s, his musical career waned in the mid 1960s but he was making 3 movies a year at that time, he had no time for music, made 33 movies in all, all were box office smashes... also, became the first artist to sell one billion albums worldwide back in the early 2000s... inducted into the gospel/Country and R+R Hall Of Fames also... received three Grammy's in his lifetime, all were for his Gospel recordings... Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 08-01-2017 ok peeps, i'll let someone else post "the thin white duke" for January 8th... Born on this day ... - Ruby - 08-01-2017 ^Not I. Did that last year, just two days before he died! :frown: Born on the same day but one year later than Bowie, in 1947, in the City of Angels, is Robby Krieger, formally lead, and other guitarist of the The Doors â they had session bass players in studio and also used the late Ray Manzarekâs keyboard bass, mostly live. Krieger has released seven solo albums over the years since the demise of The Doors. I listened to his most recent instrumental release, Singularity, which indulges his love of fusion, as well as Spanish guitar (he had bought a Ramirez on a school break to Puerta Vallarta and was later taught how to play Flamenco, informally, from what I can gather by author/playwright/actor Frank Chin). There are some shining moments, in my view, especially since I have a penchant for Flamenco, and there are some rather spectacular slide numbers, but itâs also a bit too cacophonic in places for my personal taste. This is the intro to âRussian Caravanâ from the aforesaid album which I unfortunately canât find in its entirety on the tube of you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmYkOdOlTfk In his website bio he says (or must have said, some time back!), âIn The Doors we have both musicians and poets, and both know of each otherâs art, so we can effect a synthesis. In the case of Tim Buckley or Dylan you have one manâs ideas. Most groups today arenât groups. In a true group all the members create the arrangements among themselves.â That must have been before The Soft Parade, which is the first album where all the writing is not credited to The Doors, but to individuals. This was as a result of Jim Morrison not wanting to be associated with some of Kriegerâs lyrics, apparently. Not an easy album to record as among other difficulties, including huge expenses, by that stage âJimboâ was behaving, err, rather badly. Reading between the lines, Krieger gets credit for at least half the writing on the album, so one might assume that he took a large portion of the responsibility for keeping it all together at that time. The Doors released their debut album 50 years ago this month  (the 4[SUP]th [/SUP]of January, 1967, to be precise) ⦠the lead single was âBreak On Through (To The Other Side)â ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BYNDpFIBPw, which was followed by âLight My Fireâ ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMCl9eOBlsY The following were all written by Krieger ⦠From The Soft Parade ⦠âWishful Sinfulâ ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dI-M0VZuEQ, âRunninâ Bluesâ with RK doing a bit of a Dylan parody on second vocal in the chorus ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ9X8q_JKEw, and âTouch Meâ ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7GKblttlMY And from L.A. Woman, their last album before Jim Morrisonâs death. (They did make two more afterwards neither of which were well received, and although Iâve only listened to excerpts, I can hear why! A definite case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts) ⦠ |
