What 's the weather like where you are ? - MFS - 09-02-2017

We have had 51 mm of rain since 9am yesterday. That's quite extraordinary, since February is one of our driest months and it's not unusual in summer to go several weeks with no rain at all, not even a light shower.

"It'll do the gardens good" as they always say.
Could you plz forward your findings to mr Trump, I feel he needs some RL experience regarding the climate issue.
Up here we've been facing spring for some time, but three days ago the snow came back, temperature round 0 Celsius

Forgot to ask, do you ever experience floods, cellars and streets being filled with water up your knees?

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. I have not personally experienced those, but yes, severe weather events do happen in Australia.

Was just out of curiosity, you do live in a continent I in some aspects envy, lot of sun and warmth. We face several heavy rains each year, normally during spring or summer time, causing rivers to break their natural barriers and sewing system not being able to keep up with the water flow... This is, tho, only happening in certain areas but we hear a lot about it...

the areas here which tend to have flooding on the scale you mention MFS are those that cop direct hits from cyclones (hurricanes in the US), so theyre generally in the northern half of the country...
places like Sydney do get flooding also from torrential rain in winter on occasion also...

as youre probably aware from the early morning news bob_32, Perth recorded 110mm in the last 24hrs,
yes I realise your post was posted around midnight, but we apparently had most of the rain to reach that total between midnight and 5am...

temp yesterday also only reached a maximum of 17C/62F, our coldest Feb day in decades apparently and well below the 34C/93F we reached on Monday...

highly unseasonal weather indeed, but it was the remnants of a cyclone I believe??

We're getting dumped on...expecting 30 - 40 cm of snow tonight and tomorrow morning ! That's between 12 to 16 inches for my American friends!

Yes, and the rare rain events we do get in summer are very often due to the effects of an ex-cyclone.

It wasn't just our "coldest Feb day in decades"; it was our lowest Feb maximum ever recorded since records began, over 100 years ago. So yes, definitely an extreme weather event par excellence.

Answering MFS: Australia being the size it is, and the typical sizes of pressure highs and lows being what they are, it's frequently the case that heat waves on the east side of the country coincide with cool spells on the western side, and vice versa.

That's a lot of water... A hovercraft could be handy on those roads...
