Singles - No Better Than This
Not your mom and dads Mellencamp. Probably not yours either. This is laid back country/folk Mellencamp with amybe some rockabilly. Think I liked
it better on a first listen years ago, because it was so different than what was expected. Still settles in with a comfortable score. Low
production doesn't do it any favors as the mono low tech sound wears thin. Reminds me of that recent Neil Young debacle recorded in some 50's
booth. Not that bad, but it has that quality. Actual recording took place in a church, a hotel room and Sun Records studio. John Prine comes to
mind for the vocals. A couple of love tracks but the title track is the low point. I lost track of John's material after around Human Wheels
which was quite a few albums back so I'm not sure if this style is a gradual transition or a sudden back to the roots deal.

i refuse to buy that one, probably like you with the Dylan Xmas album i guess...
but we'll each pick 'em up someday in a discount bin for sure.
i think John slowed down a bit a few years ago after his major heart op bt dont quote me on that...
i lost touch with him after Lonesome Jubilee(hated that "cherry bomb" song) and didnt return until No Better Than This, so i missed an aweful lot also.

this time,for the first time, of many times in his career, he makes a complete and unexpected left turn into uncharted waters...
he leaves the comfort zone of New Wave, flies to Nashville and records a country covers album...
most of these covers are quite obscure,especially for the average listener so they didnt appear to be covers back in the day...
anyway,Elvis did a pretty good job here, putting his own little stamp on the tracks...
nothing on here that is blatantly bad and at the same time only one track that really stands out in "good year for the roses", which would, without a doubt, be in my top5 Costello tracks.
in Japan,when they released this one, they included a bonus disc which contained all the original versions....a bold and interesting move on his part.
all up, not a bad album of respectably good,listenable country covers!
