What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 26-07-2010

Jerome Wrote:That's 'Swahili' Mr Music Head! And I have to agree he was a great performer. Still think the intro to 'Hot August Night' is one of the best openers to a live concert ever.

Thanks for the correction Jerome.
Figured I had that wrong, but was too lazy to look it up.

At the time of release I would have called this alternative but don't think you can say that anymore. Think this album was considered a sellout at the time. I never saw it, but hey, what do I know? Material was still fresh and unique to me. Anytime you top the charts with an album and 2 singles and win awards, I guess you're a sellout. Their fifth album.

Their fifth album and the last good one. But there was only 1 left before they hung it up. MTV had become all the rage and helped promote five singles off of here of which Drive charted the highest at #3. Produced by Mutt Lange this would become their best selling album reaching #3 on the U.S. charts.

The very first band I saw live, in '78 !! It's Hawkwind with a temporary contractual name-change.

A classy Rock album IMV. Some may be repelled by Robert Calvert's Hippie Sci-Fi lyrics, but they've always appealed to me.

With very little adjustment to their then-current sound, they manage to emulate Roxy Music on the 25 Years song - Calvert's vocal is so Bryan Ferry, it's hard to imagine it's not an impersonation - and then Punk on the very next song, Flying Doctor...

Their sixth release and the boys have hit that inevitable slide, after the resignation of bassit Tom Petersson. Although replacement Jon Brant is pictured on the cover, Rick Nielsen actually laid down most of the bass lines in the studio. A decent album, but certainly not up to par with previous work. Barely a passing grade for me. The Devo ripoff on the worst track is horrendous. The album reached #39 on the U.S. charts with singles of If You Want My Love and She's Tight, neither doing too well.
