Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 02-11-2012 #475 - Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go - 1964 running recap for me - 3's=16, 2's=7, 1's=3 this one - *** from the album: Where Did Our Love Go Written by Holland/Dozier/Holland Produced by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier Chart action: #1 US, #3 UK, #1 Canada the players: Diana Ross - lead vocal Florence Ballard - backing vocals Mary Wilson - backing vocals Funk Brothers - all instruments From the groups second album and it took them to the top. The first of five consecutive #1 songs. The song was turned down by Motowns other top selling female act, the Marvelettes. The Supremes weren't crazy about the song either, but yielded to the label heads. Eddie Holland wanted Mary Wilson to sing lead on the song but Motown chief Berry Gordy had already decided that Diana Ross was the top dog of the group. The album was released months after the single had hit the top and the group was on its way to being the best selling girl group of the sixties. Nice live clip for the song. Lyrics Baby, baby Baby don't leave me Ooh, please don't leave me All by myself I've got this yearning, burning Yearning feelin' inside me Ooh, deep inside me And it hurts so bad You came into my heart So tenderly With a burning love That stings like a bee Now that I surrender So helplessly You now wanna leave Ooh, you wanna leave me Ooh, baby, baby Where did our love go? Ooh, don't you want me Don't you want me no more Ooh, baby Baby, baby Where did our love go And all your promisses Of a love forever more I've got this yearning, burning Yearning feelin' inside me Ooh, deep inside me And it hurts so bad Before you won my heart You were a perfect guy But now that you got me You wanna leave me behind Baby, baby, ooh baby Baby, baby don't leave me Ooh, please don't leave me All by myself Ooh, baby, baby Where did our love go? Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 02-11-2012 great, great song IMO Music Head... reminds me of a great cover version of it also Looking Back At Some Classics - Mrrusty1 - 02-11-2012 yes Diana Ross is one of my alltime favourite motown stars Music Head Wrote:#475 - Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go - 1964 Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 02-11-2012 had forgotten about the Soft Cell cover a rare love rating for a cover Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 02-11-2012 Playing catch up here...not big on The Strokes, ok song! As for the Smiths great band and I like the tune! Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 02-11-2012 Not one of my favorite Supremes songs! I'm sure they have a few rated higher to come! Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 03-11-2012 looks like I skipped one people, sorry #476 - Aretha Franklin - Do Right Woman, Do Right Man - 1967 running recap for me - 3's=16, 2's=7, 1's=3 this one - *** from the album: I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You Written by Chips Moman, Dan Penn Produced by Jerry Wexler Chart action: #9 US the players: Aretha Franklin - vocal other people - other stuff The Queen in her prime. Not my favorite Aretha track but it works just as well. Aretha walked out of the Muscle Shoals session when this was being recorded, after her manager/husband got into it with the studio manager. They split and the song wasn't finished till weeks later at a New York session. Says the song reached #9 here, but then says it was released as the b-side to I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You. If that was the a-side, wouldn't that chart ranking be based on that? Never understood how that worked. Nice clip from the Merv Griffin show in 1967. Lyrics Take me to heart And I'll always love you And nobody Can make me do wrong Take me for granted Leaving love unsure Makes willpower weak And temptation strong A woman's only human You should understand She's not just a plaything She's flesh and blood just like her man If you want to do right all day's woman You've gotta be a do right all night man Yeah, yeah, they say that it's a man's world But you can't prove that by me And as long as we're together, baby Show some respect for me If you want to do right all day's woman You've gotta be a do right all night man A woman's only human This you should understand She's not just a plaything She's flesh and blood just like her man If you want to do right all day's woman You've gotta be a do right all night man You've gotta be a do right all night man Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 03-11-2012 Ahhh....Aretha, The Queen Of Soul *** Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 04-11-2012 #474 - Van Morrison - Into The Mystic - 1970 running recap for me - 3's=16, 2's=8, 1's=3 this one - ** from the album: Moondance Written by Van Morrison Produced by Van Morrison Chart action: not released as a single the players on the album: Van Morrison – vocals, guitar, rhythm guitar, tambourine, harmonica, Jack Schroer – alto and soprano saxophones Collin Tilton – flute, tenor saxophone Jef Labes – organ, piano, clavinet John Platania – guitar, rhythm guitar John Klingberg – bass Gary Mallaber – drums, vibraphone Guy Masson – conga Not released as a single. Been wondering if those were considered. Well it is greatest songs, not greatest singles. Sure opens up the possibilities. Don't think this tune would show up in my list. A good one, but not great. When asked the meaning of the song, Van didn't have one. No comment here. This is from Van's third album. Critically acclaimed and on many best of lists, but sales didn't match that. I sometimes forget we're talking song and not album when I'm doing these. They kind of run together for me. Van dumped his musicians that were used for the previous Astral Weeks album, picking up an all new cast. After purchasing a new home in Woodstock, he was starting fresh. Lyrics We were born before the wind Also younger than the sun Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic Hark, now hear the sailors cry Smell the sea and feel the sky Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home And when the fog horn blows I want to hear it I don't have to fear it And I want to rock your gypsy soul Just like way back in the days of old And magnificently we will flow into the mystic When that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home And when that fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it I don't have to fear it And I want to rock your gypsy soul Just like way back in the days of old And together we will flow into the mystic Come on girl... Too late to stop now... Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 04-11-2012 "moondance" is an awesome album, full of great songs IMO.album gets ***, this one, like you gets ** |
