What Are You Listening To? - Ruby - 05-07-2014
âAll the Wild Horsesâ, the last cut from Ray LaMontagnesâ debut album Trouble. Itâs such a simple, hushed song and it seems to strike a deeply resonant chord within many listeners (myself included). My only complaint is that it wafts away almost before youâre quite sure of what youâve heard â or perhaps that ephemeral quality IS the magic!

Not sure why I never followed up on Lorrie. This album would certainly warrant it. Voice remnds me of Dolly/Tanya. And then a guest appearance from Dolly. It is on a Dolly album also. Something In Red is just beautiful, and sad. Even a George Jones cover that Lorrie masters. And how about Faithfully, she even pulls that off. Not familiar with any other of Lorrie's work so I can't speak overall but this albums mighty fine for me. I see the woman has been married 6 times. That don't help the image much. I guess you can't count the dead one as her fault. But wait, he died of alcohol poisoning. Maybe she drove him to drink.

whether he calls himself John Cougar,John Mellencamp or John Cougar Mellencamp depends on his mood at the time of releasing an album...
this one is studio album #21 of his thirty-eight year recording career...and what a career its been, he's had his upa and downs, his multi-million selling albums and ones that barely sold a hundred thousand copies...
this album though did make the top10 in his homeland...
this one is really his rough folky,blues album...sort of his "ghost of tom joad" i guess.
John's vocals on this one are very raspy and rough to the point of comparing them to those of Bob Dylan's smokey raspy sounds over the last fifteen/twenty years...
songs were produced by T-Bone Burnett, and reocrded at several studios including the "legendary sun studios" on Sam Phillips Drive in Memphis,Tennessee...
there is a sound on this album that also suits those Sun days from the mid 1950s...sort of a rockabilly sound throughout with the same sparse instrumentation and recorded on analog equipment...
best song on here,without a doubt, is "easter eve", a Dylanesque sounding acoustic track that clocks in at well over six minutes...awesome stuff indeed!
in fact for a guy who was around thrity four years into his recording career in 2010 this is awesome material and even though i think Cougar-Mellencamp has made some aweful albums over this time,overall, he is still a great songwriter, so i forgive him his tresspasses into average albums when he releases them!
