Steve Morse was born on this day in 1954, in Hamilton, Ohio, USA. He’s said to be one of the hardest working guitarists in the business and it just takes a quick glance at his list of credits to see how that is, in all likelihood, quite true – and then some! To keep it concise though, he’s played with the Dixie Dregs, his own Steve Morse Band, Kansas, Deep Purple (he’s their longest serving guitarist), Angelfire and Flying Colors. He is recognised as a virtuoso, not least by Guitar Player magazine and its readers who voted him player of the year five times in a row, an honour shared with Steve Howe and Eric Johnson.

For me, sometimes undiluted rock virtuosity can be a bit too blinding in its intensity, but sometimes it has enormous appeal; mood dependent mostly. Here’s some of that from Flying Colors’ album Second Nature, which, on the whole, achieves something less overreaching than others of a similar ilk (once again, IMHO, so totally subjective, of course! Lol!) …

Happy Birthday to Tanita Tikaram who was born on this day in 1969, in Münster, West Germany – she is of Indo/Fijian and Malaysian descent – currently living in England. She first came to notice with the release of her album Ancient Heart and two singles from it which garnered her some chart success, mostly in the UK, Europe and the Antipodes – she also got quite a bit of airplay here in South Africa but for some reason, never really went down well in the USA. Her first couple of albums were produced by Rod Argent and Peter van Hooke, which I’m sure I’ve mentioned before.

This single may be familiar ….

She’s made ten studio albums in all, three over the course of the past fifteen years – one of which was released in March this year - Closer to the People. I’ve been listening to it on and off, and just not got around to posting. I like it – a lot. The curious thing about Tanita Tikaram is that while she doesn’t ‘wow’ you, so to speak, you find yourself going back for more – she draws you in with infinite subtlety. At least, that’s my experience!

This new album, I feel, is probably a lot more melodic than some of her previous work, some of which although beautiful, unusual and thoughtful, can be a little heavy going, and which for me, must be heard in measured doses. Quite strange that her voice has lifted rather than the other way round which is what usually happens – or not?!? Or maybe it’s a different inflection or just my own impression – dunno!

The title of the new work says a lot – she was intent on developing a closer working relationship with her road band, and I think this translates to her audience as well; she is still as serious and her work as sumptuous, and even more refined, but there is also an element of fun which really rounds things out nicely. You’ll find a bit more jazz/blues at play here, and there’s a slightly Van Morrison sound on some of the music. Lyrics, as always, are poetic, intelligent and meaningful, and I keep returning for listens, so I guess I’d better just get on with it and make the purchase! …

Kraftwerk’s founding and sole remaining original member, Ralf Hütter, was born on this day in 1946, in Krefeld, Germany. Notoriously reclusive and private, not much else is known about him apart from his love of cycling (ergo the Tour de France release). Kraftwerk is recognised for their pioneering and innovations in the field of electronic music, and their body of work has been a major influence on any number of artists, Bowie amongst them.

Here’s a clip of them playing MH’s favourite musical instruments – live!!

Geoff Downes was born on this day in 1952, in Cheshire, England. A keyboardist, songwriter and producer, he and Trevor Horn formed The Buggles. Their first album produced a huge worldwide hit – “Video Killed the Radio Star” (which is now 36 years old – noooo!!…) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8r-tXRLazs. In the same year, both he and Horn joined Yes and made the album Drama which was a bit of departure for everyone, and which seems to mark a pivotal point for Yes. The line-up was not destined to last, and Downes, John Wetton, Carl Palmer and Steve Howe went on to found Asia. Downes, who has produced extensively for the likes of Mike Oldfield, Thompson Twins and GTR cites the three musicians to have most inspired his keys as Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson and Dave Sinclair.

There are gazillions of Asia tracks to choose from, but I like this one from the quite enjoyably gung ho Drama … lettin’ their hair down! To me, this album has quite an intuitive, decisive, upbeat feeling about it, and cool cover artwork too!
