you probably don't rock

Cannot stand tattoos of any description. Just looks hideous to me.

^^And to add insult to injury – he has precisely zero to do with music, leaving less than no reason for his inked ass to feature in the first place.

Oh well … there’s no accounting for folk –

Moving on …

Alan White was born on this day in 1949, in County Durham, England. He joined Yes in around 1972, stepping into the abandoned drumming boots of Bill Bruford who’d left to join King Crimson; he’s appeared on every Yes album since.

Prior to that, he’d been asked by John Lennon to join the Plastic Ono Band as a result of which he’s on the Live Peace in Toronto 1969 album, and also secured a spot on Imagine. George Harrison then commandeered him for All Things Must Pass, after which he joined Ginger Baker’s Air Force for a brief stint, followed by Joe Cocker. He was on tour with the latter when Yes came calling.

In addition to Yes, he’s released one solo album to less than critical acclaim, with which sentiment, I am sorry to say, I concur – dear heaven! A clear case for the whole being greater than the sum of its parts – possibly even the posterchild for that saying. IMHO, the only song worth listening to has Jon Anderson and Steve Howe on it and the lyrics are from a William Blake poem! Here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhzEXNdclEo. He is also listed on the credits of around 50 other albums with various artists. In addition to drums, he is a competent piano player and also contributes backing vocals.

The 2001 album, Magnification, was a departure for Yes, primarily because they decided not to recruit a new keyboard player once the most recent one had left, but rather to use White on piano when required, and to otherwise use an orchestra to fill the gaps. They hired one Larry Groupé to compose the requisite parts. White provides percussion, piano, backing vocals and drums –

Gino Vanelli was born on this day in 1952, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He got his first break with Herb Alpert and is a composer, lyricist, conductor, pianist, guitarist, vocalist and percussionist. I know that he is highly regarded among fellow musos as well as his listeners, especially for Brother to Brother, (the title track - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZrF76MuF0w) and he is still touring.

This is one of his better known songs, originally released on 1981's Nightwalker …

^Apologies to Mr Vannelli for dropping an 'n'! (Editing remains an effort.)

Paul Young was born on this day in 1947, in Manchester, England. He was the lead singer of Sad Café and then shared lead vocal duty with Paul Carrack in Mike + the Mechanics. He died totally unexpectedly, without any history of health problems, in July 2000 and without any known cause as was established posthumously; his heart simply gave out for no apparent reason. How very fragile we are!

Great rock voice and a great range he had - gone far too young. Since I don’t own any of their music and haven’t heard it in aeons, I’m surprised to find I recognise so many of Sad Café’s songs!

Probably Sad Café’s best known track, from the very fab soft rock album, Facades …

Peter Skiving ‘Pete’ Bardens was born on this day in 1944, in London, England - he died in 2002, from lung cancer. He was a keyboard wiz and is known for his time with Camel, prior to which he’d worked with (amongst others) Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and Rod Stewart. He had also recorded his first solo album, The Answer (great guitars on this by Peter Green and Andy Gee).

Camel was founded in 1972 by Pete Bardens and Andy Latimer, along with Andy Ward and Doug Ferguson. Bardens and Latimer take the writing credits for The Snow Goose, and for that effort alone, are my heroes. After recording Breathless, he left Camel to join Van Morrison’s Them (with whom he’d played before) – made one album, Wavelength, and then went solo to pursue his increasing interest in electronica.

He made a number of albums over the years, as well putting together a band called Mirage that had only one release; urban legend has it that the band was very nearly named Caramel due to Caravan/Camel personnel associations, but fortunately someone nipped that idea in the bud! Very confusing, all the guest appearances and swapping of band members on the various albums – rock n roll genealogy can make your head spin! Suffice to say that Pete Bardens seemed to have maintained good relations with previous bandmates who show up all over the place on his stuff, Latimer included.

I’ve heard his Water Colours and Seen One Earth – this is from the latter …

Nils Lofgren was born on this day in 1951, in Chicago, Illinois. He sings, writes and plays assorted types of guitars, keyboards and accordion.

He’s been a member of the E Street Band (as such inducted into the R&R HoF), Crazy Horse (very briefly), Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, Grin, Patti Scialfa’s band and Neil Young with whom he’s recorded and toured. He’s also had a respectable solo career.

This is from his album, Silver Lining – the boss doing backup duty … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfdNjdWYgwU

There is bound to be a difference of opinion here, but in mine, he did an amazing job on The Loner: Nils Sings Neil - not sure who else would do justice to these Young songs with so much sensitivity and respect – Nils and Neil go back a long way. Soooo …. the piano based lead track … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOpcvc2GcK4

And another of Nils’ piano based numbers (which NY has made more than once appearance on in live performances) - a ballad from Acoustic Live - not at all shabby, these keys –

Achinoam Nini, otherwise known as Noa, was born on this day in 1969, in Tel Aviv, Israel. Noa lived in New York from age 2 to 16, returning to Israel after school to complete mandatory military service where she was part of an entertainment troupe – she later studied music in Israel and she pops up on my listening radar every now and then.

A singer, guitar and piano and conga player, she has performed at major venues and festivals all over the world, together with long time musical partner Gil Dor, and she has recorded songs in Arabic, English, French, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Spanish, Thai and Yemenite. She has collaborated with Pat Metheny and performed with Andrea Bocelli, Carlos Santana, Sheryl Crow, George Benson, Johnny Clegg, Zucchero, Sting and Al di Meola, just to name a few at the mere tip of the iceberg!
