Junior Campbell was born on this day in Glascow, Scotland, in 1947. He was a founding member and the lead guitarist of Marmalade, and wrote a couple of their best known songs as well as having a fairly successful solo career. He has also composed extensively for film and TV and, like Ringo Starr, was involved in Thomas the Tank Engine & friends.

He wrote this song for Marmalade – “Rainbow” – and here we have a very pastoral video clip, complete with obligatory seductress aaaand …. a herd of cows!?! She’d have to have been quite careful about where those white boots landed …. hilarious!

Sir Edward Elgar was born on this day in 1857, in Broadheath, near Worcester, England. He died on 23 February 1934. He was a pre-eminent composer of his era and the recipient of numerous accolades, but it took quite a while for him to become popular with the concert going public which was the only way anyone heard music back then. You had to have your work performed in front of an audience – recording was a brand new invention and playback devices limited. At the time, he was known as being ‘progressive’ – it’s all relative, I guess!

Amongst what have become a number of concert standards, he was the author of “Pomp and Circumstance”, a portion of which also became known as “Land of Hope and Glory” once it had words set to it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGJXH8XVRQA

Jacqueline du Pré made his Cello Concerto in E minor famous with this recording from 1965 - she was 20 years old; it gives me goosebumps! Mstislav Rostropovich, who is possibly the most decorated cellist/conductor of the 20[SUP]th[/SUP] century, is said to have removed the piece from his repertoire after hearing du Pré’s recording, the reason being, he said, that she had played it better than he.

Les Paul was born Lester William Polsfuss on this day in 1915 in Wisconsin, USA. He was, of course, one of the pioneers of the solid body electric guitar and there’s a list of muso’s the length of both my arms who choose to play derivatives of his invention. He was also a lifelong and highly accomplished performer himself, despite having suffered several serious physical setbacks, not least of which was fracturing his right elbow so badly that the docs wanted to amputate. Instead he had the irreparably damaged joint permanently set at an angle that was comfortable for cradling his guitar and which allowed him to continue to pick.

I can’t even begin to paraphrase Mr Paul’s career (especially since there were 81 years of it – yup, he started at 13!) so moving swiftly on - a link to one of his higher charting numbers, with his wife, Mary Ford … “How High the Moon” ….

John Douglas ‘Jon’ Lord was born on this day in Leicester, England in 1941 – he died in 2012. He is primarily known for his tenure with Deep Purple, but he too had a mind-bogglingly varied career. He took piano lessons from the age of five and he continued to have classical aspirations right throughout his life producing a series of solo and collaborative albums in this vein, as well as being commissioned to write for film and TV now and then. There’s a whole lot more than that, of course, but simply not enough hours in the day!

I’ve been listening to his very lovely and emotive album from 1998, Pictured Within. It bears absolutely no resemblance to anything by DP but that’s perfectly fine – it’s a deeply personal offering instead, and although it’s soft, something saves it from being saccharine; such a lush string section and his keys are just magic …

Frank Lee Beard was born on this day in 1949, in Frankston, Texas, USA. Ironically, he’s the only member of ZZ Top who does not habitually sport a beard. Forty five years the band’s been going – with all three core members (and trademark facial hair) intact. By now they are experts in delivering their particular and almost instantly recognisable brand of blues rock, which, it turns out, has paid them all huge dividends.

The mostly beardless one is the drummer and when he’s not striking the snare, he owns and manages Top 40 Ranch, Texas; he’s also very good at golf. Haven’t heard them in years, but this is familiar! ….

(Perversely, of course, Beard would have a goatee in this clip … :redfaceSmile

John Kenneth Wetton was born on this day in 1949, in Derby, England. Vocalist, songwriter, bass guitarist and more, he’s been associated with a veritable who’s who of rock royalty; King Crimson, Yes, U.K., Asia, Wishbone Ash, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep, Ayreon, Family, etc., etc., ad nauseam! And solo, of course, which is from whence this random pick has been plucked! Too many choices …

I couldn't forget to write this post.

Stephen Gilchrist Glover (born June 13, 1974), better known by his stage name Steve-O, is an American-British-Canadian stunt performer, comedian, and television personality.

Steve-O is known for his eccentric character. He has a number of tattoos, which he refers to as "dumb tattoos", including a "Your Name" written on his right buttock (in order to say "I got your name tattooed on my ass") and arguably his most memorable, a self-portrait which covers half of his back and sports the words "yeah dude, I rock!"

^^ What, if anything, does the 'O' stand for? Or perhaps he'll answer that here for us?

James Carr was born on this day in 1942, in Mississippi, USA. He was a soul and rhythm and blues man with a great voice (not that I personally listen to much soul, but if I did, I’d want to hear him). He died in 2001 aged 58, from lung cancer.

Carr suffered with manic depression and despite his quite obvious talent, just could never quite made the big time which is attributed to his struggles with that affliction.

To me, no matter who has covered “The Dark End of the Street”, and there have been many, many renditions, his version (which was the first) remains the best –
